I have had moonroofs on my last 3 cars with zero issues, that's like 10+ years of electric moonroof. I haven't heard of any of my friends having issues with a moonroof or sunroof from the last decade or so. They *are* fine now on anything that isn't some hunk of poo poo that isn't sold in the states. You could make the same arguments about all sorts of poo poo in modern cars - are you one of those people that don't trust fuel injection, think variable valve timing is troublesome witchcraft, and that engines should have stopped with the ACVW? A moonroof can absolutely fail and cause some pretty ugly problems if it does but that's hardly unique in modern cars and they're worlds better than they used to be.

I'm not a luddite, that's a hell of a leap to make. I've got very specific complaints about moonroofs, due to my height as mentioned; the potential for leaks and whatnot is just the icing on the cake.

# ? Sep 7, 2018 23:31 |

If your height is a factor that's absolutely understandable but bringing up all the failure modes that moonroofs introduce while dismissing pretty significant improvements over the last 20 years as a dumb argument makes it not that big of a leap.

Sunroofs have a lot more problems compared to just having a solid roof, and better than they used to be doesn't mean problem-free by a long-shot. In something close to a dozen cars over a bunch of makes that I, or my brother, his wife, and my parents have owned every one with a sunroof has had a problem at some point. Not always a bad problem, but getting stuck or leaking a little. I always try to buy cars that don't have them, but packages with other desirable features tend to bring them along. It's not that weird to not want to deal with them.

I wouldn’t want a sunroof if it were free.

You couldn’t pay me to get a car with a sunroof. I would refuse the payment.

Oh man being anti sunroof because of failures is such a goon thing. I have a panoramic moonroof and it's awesome, especially on a Summer night. Off the top of my head I can't even think of anyone in my family that doesn't have one. If you don't like them then whatever, that's fine, don't get one. If you are paranoid about it failing but you really like them, it will be fine. The Dave fucked around with this message at 00:34 on Sep 8, 2018 |

The Dave posted:Oh man being anti sunroof because of failures is such a goon thing. I love my moon roof. Cars with sun/moon roofs have extra reinforcement in the roof. They don't degrade the crash rating because a moonroof is added.

My Corolla doesn't come in convertible guise, so I have to deal with the next best thing. I'm such a baller, I drive with the windows down, sunroof open and the AC on. Real talk, the steel frame around my sunroof is rusty like a MOTHERFUCKER. As in, every time I open that bitch, rust flakes fall down the back of my shirt, and that bitch still don't leak.

Sunroof chat: my ex's second car (the first one literally caught fire while driving*) was a late-'80s Chevy Cavalier Z24 with a sunroof that leaked so bad it got a recall/warranty fix notice mailed out. But his dad had already "fixed" it with silicone caulk. (It still leaked.) *'86 Subaru that was on its last legs when he bought it in 1997 at age 16. Sold the Cavalier to the neighbor for $50 after the steering wheel fell off. First cars are definitely the automotive equivalent of this thread.

I kinda like it, but am disinclined to deal with all of the leaking windows and skylights and their resultant water damage. Hard to tell if the kitchen and bathrooms were never completed, or being remodeled. Which pro athlete’s home was this? Looks like a set-piece from the original Rollerball.

A neighbor just had some random crew offer (and he accepted) to replace his roof for $3500, 25 year shingles, new tar paper, and plywood as needed. They did 95% on day one, ran out of shingles and finished the next day. As this was about 1/2 the low end price for anyone elses roof in the area, what can he expect? We assumed stolen materials, no license, illegal workers, etc.

For a small 1-story house with a single gabled roof of moderate pitch, it sounds like a good deal. If it is in excess of 8-10 squares (800-1000SF) and includes the dumpster/haul off/disposal, it’s likely something hinky.

If someone offers to do work on your house out of the blue, it's pretty much guaranteed to 100% be a scam. Your mate just hasn't realised what it is yet. I know a few people who have guys come to their doors and offer to put bitumen on their driveway and that turned out to be Z-grade watered down crap mixed with black paint. Look great immediately after they did it, turned to poo poo after a week's worth of driving. I'm guessing you just need to wait for the first rain or strong winds to see where they scammed him.
