Makes sense that my friend was ignorantly cheating! He's been using it to stupidly good effect as a first action before a huge top action that I'll leave unmentioned.

Edit: what's everyone do when you have advantage and don't know which one is better? I think the rules might say to just take the first one?

We do the 2 stacks rule and let people take whatever they think is better (and have to take whatever they think is worse for disadvantage).

Yeah. We do two-stacks for advantage but still follow RAW for ambiguity (ie take the first stack).

Our current comp is Brute/Sun/Lightning Bolt, so for items I was going to just go with melee DPS items you'd grab for like Scoundrel/Mindthief and not worry about the ignore negative item effects perk. We're prosperity 2 so I only started with 45 gold, so I picked up a Minor Stamina Potion and Cloak of Invisibility. We've done a full campaign (literally ran out of unlocked scenarios) plus almost every other scenario in casual mode plus maybe 6 random dungeons. Only then did we even pull any other game off the shelf.

Not that I wouldn't play it a little more but the fever has finally subsided, probably because we unlocked and have at least tried every class.

I don't think I've ever seen another game that lasted 10 weeks of 5-7 nights a week before losing its magic.

I think yours looks great! Good example of how we both have different underlying colors but both schemes are representative of the character image. If people are still playing with unpainted minis I'd really recommend giving it a shot, Gloomhaven has such vibrant and beautiful pieces that it only feels natural to have painted models as well.

Later on is better when you can do things like move 7 and then attack 5 two targets.

I think the available class guides (the Reddit ones, at least) are not very good, especially for low to mid level, so that doesn't help either. Concentrate on conditions/control early on and try to generate as much xp as possible. Levels 5-7 are where things get really good. Also, it will help a lot if you have element-generating items available and if you can get groupmates to carry some too.

We reran Scenario #19 (the escort mission for Hail) to unlock my personal quest. We tried rerunning it earlier in the week but struggled due to some poor tactical choices (and being really rusty at the game) but made up for it this time.

On to Scenario #61 (the Lighthouse with the enemies that phase in and out) which looks interesting but a bit of a challenge for my Angry Face.

Our Triforce owned. First few scenarios he had lower movement so he just scooped up gold. He eventually had 10 items. He has an AOE execute. Use the low dmg AOE to generate lots of elements from the perks. He frequently could hit 3-5 guys for 7-9 damage. Put my lightning bolt and two minis to shame.

I played mostly 2 with some occasional 3 player and you're not missing anything. 2p might be a bit easier due to fewer monsters making CC and kills relieve more pressure, but that's about it.

The developer says it's cool to houserule double progress for donations and some personal quests because they are balanced for 4p.

I wouldn't recommend playing alone, but anywhere from two to four is definitely cool. There's a few things that are obviously tuned for four players, but you can just double your progress on those as a house rule.

Sweet spot is three, and if you're using less than 4 there are definitely some PQs you will need to houserule, in particular watch 12 allies exhaust, which can take literally forever

Two players gives you a bit less flexibility in terms of group makeup than higher playercounts, and a handful of campaign-related need house rules to fix the rate of progress but those sound like bigger problems than they are.

We've done about 40 scenarios 2P and are a bit over half way.

nice dolphin, nigga
A few months since I've retired it, but I wrote a postmortem for my Cragheart, mostly about what cards I used. Spoilers at the end, but just for Cragheart cards and items up to Prosperity 3.

Life Without a Heart: A Memoir
by Ricky Bismuth

Opposing Strike
Used as a standard attack/XP gain for a long time, only stopped using it when I had better XP gain cards. Rarely actually hit 2 enemies with it though.

Crushing Grasp
Almost never brought, unless Loot was required by the scenario. I think I looted 3 coins once though, in one such scenario.

Avalanche
Maybe took once, the obstacles aren't that useful and the loss AOE is not big enough to be worth it.

Rumbling Advance
Always brought, the big heal was often useful, and a source of reliable mana. Also, I tended to throw out a lot of true damage. I upgraded the move on this card as one of my retiring acts.

Massive Boulder
More true damage, so it got taken a lot early on but didn't make the cut usually in later levels

Backup Ammunition
I could never figure out a good time to switch it on, so eventually I stopped bringing it. It was good with Massive Boulder but felt wasted with most other attacks.

Rock Tunnel
I never brought unless I really needed the move, which happened rarely early on and never later.

Unstable Upheaval
I brought often early but rarely used. I didn't have reliable access to mana to power up the top, so I was mostly just bringing it in case the bottom was necessary, which happened maybe once. But late in my career, when I finally figured out how to use the bottom of Forceful Storm properly, it became my second favorite room clearer.

Crater
I rarely ever used, maybe early on for the bottom action when I didn't have a lot of other true damage. I don't think I ever charged the top.

Dirt Tornado
I used extensively for probably 2/3rds of my career. The muddle effect was very helpful at reducing damage, and I would usually use it with goggles to squeeze out an extra damage or get rolling greens to recharge. Never did get the curse upgrade for it, so I stopped using it around level 6 because I had other sources of muddle and AOE damage.

Earthen Clod
Another one that rarely got used. I don't think I ever used it for the immobilize - in retrospect it might have been useful early on, but who knows. I brought it for the extra heal on a bottom action a few times, usually in scenarios with a lot of poison, and it definitely earned its keep there.

Heaving Swing
I didn't see the point of it early on, but once I was able to start making my own obstacles, it makes a great one-two punch of true damage. And that +1 push upgrade… whoa. This is a fearsome attack for taking out some of the nastiest enemies, and became a linchpin later on in my career. It helps add to the flexibility of Cragheart's arsenal, making it just as effective at single target true damage as AOE. I put wound on this when I retired, to give it a little extra something.

Forceful Storm
I didn't bring this early on very much, due to the fact that Cragheart doesn't have that many melee options early to pair the bottom with (not to mention the difficulty of getting in position). The top seemed ok, but I was pretty trigger shy early on about using loss cards before the end of a scenario and this one didn't seem impressive enough to justify. But once I stated shifting to more of a melee role, this became a must-take every scenario. I still probably didn't use the top much, but the bottom is part of Cragheart's highest damage attack potential combo, enabling it to clear rooms full of enemies with one attack. (more later)

Nature's Lift
Has anyone ever used the bottom of this card? I assume it must combo with some class I haven't seen yet. The top, again, got used in scenarios with a lot of poison, but otherwise this card was benched normally.

Explosive Punch
My biggest regret for a card choice. I got jealous of how much damage my party was doing and wanted a big attack, so I took this. Plus Sentient Growth just looked so boring in comparison. I rarely was able to use it for the attack, and rarely to hit more than 2 enemies. The move and initiative were consistently useful though.

Clear the Way
This was a lot of fun early on, and it's just delightful to be able to toss around obstacles, with good range as well. Worth it in the early levels, plus the experience gain really helps Cragheart keep up. Falls off a little late in the game when the 2/3 damage is just not worth the setup.

Rock Slide
Duh. True damage is Cragheart's specialty, and killing a room full of Flame Demons with this and a stamina potion can be so satisfying. It's also just neat that you're able to shape the battlefield, creating chokepoints and walls. Also blocking enemy summons is great.

Stone Pummel
I went the melee build path and don't regret it. Possibly never used the bottom of this card, but the top is pretty ok, especially if you're spending a couple turns in melee and can combine it with the bottom of Forceful Storm. I don't know if I was ever able to hit all 4 targets (maybe once), but hitting 2 is almost always possible, and 3 damage with muddle each is respectable.

Cataclysm
So much fun. Move in late in the round and generate earth, then use this with Forceful Storm and trivialize the end room of most scenarios. I did around 45 damage with this one time, killing 5 imps. True story.

Meteor
I desperately wanted to get this card, but only got to use it one time before retirement, and only hit one enemy with it (it wasn't a good scenario for this). However, I did follow up with Explosive Punch. 10/10 would meteor again.

Perks
I took the rolling earth cards first, since it was clear that most of Cragheart's good moves needed it, but not all his good moves would provide it for the turn after. Also, a lot of his experience gain is gated by consuming earth. The problem became drawing enough cards to get the earth when I needed it, so I bought the Goggles and would use them with my multi-target attacks. Next I took the Ignore Negative Scenario Effects, since we were doing a lot of those missions and I liked rubbing it in my teammate's stupid faces. After that I mostly got the other rolling effect modifiers, most of which were never useful, but at least they take some of the sting out of drawing a Null. I think I once drew a push with Heaving Swing! We had an increasing number of exhausts from our Scoundrel and Spellweaver, so when it became clear that one tank was not enough for our party, I invested in "Ignore negative equipment effects" and got the heavy armor, which is part of why I started gravitating towards a melee role. Cragheart has a lot of survivability in the early levels with easy access to muddle, numerous heal cards, and the heavy armor.

Upgrades
The only one I ended up buying during my career was the push +1 on Heaving Swing. With a bunch of uses of Rock Slide you can set it up easily, and the true damage is amazing for killing off high armor enemy champions.

Items
I took the recommended starting items, Power Potion and Boots of Striding. The boots were very useful, since Cragheart's good move actions are on loss cards a lot of the time, and Rumbling Advance really wants some flexibility. The Power Potion was a waste early, but great for powering up the big AOE attacks later on. Got Stamina Potion and Goggles soon after. Stamina was almost always used to pick up Rock Slide, and Goggles got used for the big AOE hits as well. I took Chainmail when I became the off-tank, and Moon Earring for refreshing Chainmail, Goggles and Boots, which was actually very handy since due to the hand size discrepancy between Cragheart and Scoundrel/Spellweaver, I rarely got to long rest since I had to keep ahead of the rest of the team.

Summation
At the beginning I played as a muddle/healer support build, while I tried to find my niche. Once I got Rock Slide and Clear the Way I switched to a ranged AOE damage dealer, finishing off injured enemies and tying down threats by muddling or tanking them while my allies moved into position. Later I shifted to more melee as I learned to use Heaving Swing and the bottom of Forceful Storm effectively. I had just hit level 8 as I retired. Cragheart has been my favorite so far of the character's I've played, and compared to the rest of the starting classes I think I made the best choice. I like playing support, but I don't like being dedicated to just buff/heal, I prefer more of a Swiss army knife approach, where for any particular situation I have a useful contribution. I was able to shine more once we started playing consistently on hard mode, meaning my teammates wouldn't be able to clear a room before my initiative even came up. Most of the time, I would be doing true damage to either high shield targets or weakened enemies, but I had a lot more flexibility when we ran into harder fights, since I could also tank, AOE, and heal as the situation demanded. I feel like Cragheart can fit effectively into any party composition, just by switching what cards you bring into a scenario.
