So dazzled was I by the glitz and glamour of Octaman and the salivating prospect of even MORE Giant Spider Invasion I completely overlooked the sci-fi epic Star Raiders with Casper van Diem and bonus Cynthia Rothrock.

Anyone have episodes they like to watch because the movie itself is actually kind of good? I think Moon Zero Two isn’t that bad, and I get a kick out of the western-space setting that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

It would probably be cheating of me to say the two Godzilla films, but I've also watched and enjoyed both Doug McClure films from season 11 before they were riffed. I still think the uncut version of The Land of Time Forgot is really good classic sci-fi, but the edit they riffed really ruins the plot structure and pacing.

The non-MST3k version of Horrors of Spider Island I saw was just as enjoyably bad as the MST3k version. Ditto for Space Mutiny (the original version has a bit more background about the guy with the cane, as I recall) and Escape 2000 (which has a prequel that I also watched, and the original version also features the sad death of a beloved character whose name I will not reveal, but he did not feel like laughing very much at that moment).

I don't actually hate Robot Monster as a movie. It's insanely weird and clunky, but that clunkiness kind of gives it atmosphere.

I have a soft spot for the following movies, because I saw them on "Son of Svengoolie" long before they were MST episodes:

The Killer Shrews
Attack of the (the) Eye Creatures
The Leech Woman
The Screaming Skull

I always thought The Unearthly had a great plot, too bad the execution was so poor.

Well, of course! You don't need MST to prove that any survivor of a plane crash becomes languid, helpless and sex-starved!

For my own entry, Catalina Caper is a perfectly inoffensive beach comedy in the style of the time.

Oh! Because I was a big monster nut as a kid (and not really anything has changed) I did enjoy 'The Deadly Mantis' when I saw it way before MST. It's not quite 'Them' but it's a fine giant insect movie. (Worlds better than, say, 'Beginning of the End.')

I kind of like the Roger Corman movies, because he tries to do something different. He's also talented enough that if you give him five dollars, he will make something that looked like it costed him 10.

We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

Today I learned that Josh Weinstein (Dr. Erhardt and the original Tom Servo) and Josh Weinstein (a comedy writer who prominently appears in the credits of practically every good animated show of the last 25 years) are not, in fact, the same guy. Huh.

I think the MST3K Josh works under the name "J. Elvis Weinstein" for this exact reason.

I enjoy all the eurospy films they did, with Danger Death Ray being my favorite of the bunch. I would and do unironically watch 60s spy James Bond ripoff movies.

How about the opposite effect? I went back and watched all of Gemini Man (the 70s TV show that was hacked together to become Riding with Death) and kinda enjoyed it. Now I find it hard to watch the MST3K episode because I'm even more aware of the painful edits made to string together episodes 1, 10, and chunks of the pilot.

Catalina Caper, Moon Zero Two, and Marooned aka Space Travelers are all legitimately decent to pretty good movies.

I think they make kind of awkward MST3K episodes because a lot of the jokes are reaches.

I've mentioned this before but I have a fondness for Catalina Caper since I have family over there on Catalina Island and used to visit it rather regularly

Part of me wonders how hard it would be to get things worked out to do a theatrical showing of that episode over at the theater there in the Casino

Catalina Caper is odd because it's hard to make fun of comedies, and also the reason they never did it again.

The other two, I found them fertile ground. Although there is the fun story the crew have of meeting Dennis Miller when he had a talk show (for like a month, maybe) and told them while sweating profusely and looking extremely haggard that they'd screwed up picking Marooned and had maybe lost their touch. Then they just stared at each other in silence until somebody ushered Best Brains out.

I'd love to know what happened to Dennis Miller after the early 90s, like did he just stop doing drugs or what. He went from the funniest guy on earth to a confused wet fart overnight and never came back.

I used to think he was one of the people whose brains broke after 9/11 but it started years before that.

Having grown up in California and having been to Catalina before, I am in awe that there are people who think that Catalina Caper is good in any way. Even as a comedy.

From what I recall, it kinda started with the (of all things) Ross Perot campaign and then he just went off the chain during the Clinton Administration and then 9/11 meant he could really stop holding back.

The Rebel Set isn't actually that bad of a film, either. It's a little pedestrian and a pretty typical example of most crime dramas from that era; but it's not as bad as, say, a Coleman Francis film.
