That’s looks like about, what, .125 motorcycles worth of security there? How do you think your operation would handle scaling up to full size?

if you're building a CNC machine ya gotta 1) brush up on high school trig, 2) take good notes on what you're working on and why you're doing it (eg 'i am taking this measurement to check that these two axes are square' -- 'this is the table of my measurements' -- 'here is how many degrees it is out of square' -- 'here is my adjustment' -- 'here is my next table of measurements' ...) 3) post pics! looks like a great project my man 3.1) you should build it into a highway overpass and run it clandestinely at 3am when traffic's light, with your police scanner

I wanted to build a saddle stand as a Christmas present but vastly underestimated the length of time it would take to build this in my rinky-dink shop. I did manage to get this finished by Valentines day, so I've got that going for me. The mortise and tennon joints were a bit sloppy. I hadn't cut a mortise in years and never had much practice to begin with. Everything was glued with a very strong epoxy because of my inexperience, but now this thing is pretty indestructable. Since no one had any 4"x4" maple stock, I had to glue a bunch of maple boards together. I don't have a planer or a jointer, so I made do with a table saw and hand planes (took a very long time). Many hours later with a chisel, mallet, mitersaw, and router I ended up with this.

My next project is shrinking the dang thing down later this year

Threw together a quick treasure chest out of scrap wood for my wife's kindergarten classroom today. Need to go get some wood filler, paint and hardware to finish it off. Had a bit of serendipity with the lid, started cutting 2x4s into strips to make the planks, and figured I'd have to rip one down to make the last one fit. Turns out, the trash can bottom I used to trace the curve for the lid resulted in a curve that was successfully filled with a whole number of strips.

As the daughter of a potter I somehow never learned to throw on the wheel. I'm terrible at it. I love seeing oddly shaped things, even unintentional, and I think that's an awesome piece. That would be a really cool donation bowl.

Yeah, that's honestly the best suggestion I've heard yet. Thanks, I'll shop it around a bit to churches, see if any of the ones I'm familiar with are interested.

Here's the finished piece: It's maybe a little small for a donations/collections bowl: 8" long and 6" wide, or thereabouts. Still worth asking the churches I know of if they want it; I have no better ideas.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!armorer posted:How deep is it? You could totally just call it art, shadowbox it and hang it on your wall. If that sounds interesting to you, PM me. I spent several years working in a gallery doing framing, and do all my own framing now. It's very shallow. The entire piece is maybe a couple of inches tall, and the depression in the middle is hardly anything. I'm an amateur woodworker and have done some framing in the past; I guess I could give that a shot and turn it into a display piece. I'm used to having more functional uses for my stuff, but that does appear to be a bit out of the question this time. poeticoddity posted:If you put water in the center, does it come out of the longer side or both sides? I could see it being a neat part of a water feature if you ran a pipe in through the bottom. I assume you mean if it overflows the center? The sides where it folds over are solid, so it would have to come out the "front" or "back". If you tilted it so that the narrow opening was down, it could serve as a spout of sorts. I cheaped out and bought one when I first started. Knowing what I've learned since then, I'd likely make something myself instead. Pressure isn't applied perfectly evenly but it works.

I had another pipe joint degrade flooding part of my house. When I was putting everything back together after getting it fixed I noticed the other bathroom had a drip leak. This being the 4th leak in 5 years I said gently caress it and had it all redone in Pex. Which meant tear down half the wall I just finished patching. Plumber said he needed about 2.5 feet to get to the piping, I said your getting 4 since its easier to drop in a few 4x8 sheets of drywall. Also patched the walls in 2 bathrooms and re-seated both toilets. If there is another leak I am just burning the place down. edit: That chair is the best thing I have ever stolen from an employer. Rolling hard plastic chair I can just hose off after rolling around garage/construction. JEEVES420 fucked around with this message at 17:19 on Apr 8, 2019 |

Gradually fixing up my 1960s-built house. Here's the before and after on the hookups panel for the washer and dryer. Before, it had completely pulled away from the wall, being held in place only by the rigid copper water lines, so I built the wall back up and screwed the plate down to the nearest studs, plus a quick spraypainting.

Do we have a landscaping thread? When we bought our current place in December, we knew that it had a soggy back yard, but we didn't realize HOW soggy. There's standing water all over the back. While I was looking up solutions and raking leaves this spring, I discovered a drain on the side! I went to the county clerk's office and got the original site plan for our house and it looks like drain tiles were installed! If that's the case, then there's a good chance that they're just (hopefully) clogged and not (more likely) broken or full of roots. Anyone ever have to clear a yard drain, french drain, drain tile? (I've seen them called all those things online). I want to try it myself before I wind up paying a whole lot to either a landscaping company or a sewer specialist.

Well that's incredibly awesome. I had no idea that's how those rings get that design. I really love seeing everyone's projects and it makes me a bit sad I don't have any going on right now.

Scathach posted:Well that's incredibly awesome. I had no idea that's how those rings get that design. Well, I did the easy part (machining and etching). The process to make the steel is a ton of comprising of taking two different types of steel (stainless in this case), where one has a higher carbon content, and continually folding them together in a forge. The Muriatic acid then eats away at the two steels at different rates due to the carbon leaving the raised areas. I then lightly sanded the raised metal to remove the etched metal and reveal the untouched stainless steel giving it the high contrast of colors. The inner part of the ring was not sanded to keep that more uniformed color.

I would wear something like that as a replacement for my current wedding band. The most current project I’ve finished up is putting the playground back together after our move. the kids are much happier now that the weather is warmer and they can go play outside, so I finally got it reassembled last weekend. I had some great helpers putting it back together, too. Next step is to build a new canopy top. It previously had an A-frame roof but it got in the way of climbing over the top of the climbing wall. Thankfully it gets good afternoon/evening shade but I still want to build something to keep the UV off of them. Next up: in-wall speakers in our kitchen with volume control in the closet, run back to the receiver for zone 2 output so we can play the same music, etc. I’ll also wall-mount the TV and run cables in the wall for that as well as proper Ethernet runs from my router, etc. devmd01 fucked around with this message at 01:07 on Apr 14, 2019 |
