Give them a snack maybe? I used to be able to do literally whatever with my rat boys as long as they were busy chomping away on a snack.

Nah these fellas usually won't eat if they're on alert, and in any case it makes it a little harder to hear their breathing if they're eating. I can snack 'em before and after but not so much during.

Well, Spencer is gone. Greyhaven picked him up 10 minutes ago. He'd been running around being a cheeky little Goffins all morning. It really really sucks to see him go.

Dr. McDonald has discovered another fracture further up Scout's leg, and it has put the viability of the leg in question. She's been getting antsy at the vet, which Dr. McDonald feels contributed to the fracture. She had one of her staff sit with her for an hour and a half and give her scritches, which really helped her. My wife was over there yesterday to visit, and we'll both be going over again tomorrow.

As per your suggestions, I have set up a GoFundMe for Scout, and it can be accessed here:

Any contributions are greatly appreciated by us and Scout.

I'm sorry to hear all that, though I think you may have the wrong thread. Same problems, different balls of fluff.

Gave one of my rats his first ever bath, since he was getting real musky lately and it was pretty unpleasant for all involved.

He wasn't too happy about the bath, sorta hate-enjoyed the drying off, but now smells much better and has fluffy white fur again.

One of my girls had surgery today to remove a smallish tumor under her armpit. They said the removal went fine but there wasn't enough subcutaneous tissue to put catgut stitches in there, so they had to use regular stitches on her skin instead. "Don't worry, she won't try to remove the stitches, she's too loopy on pain meds."

Naturally, a couple hours later, she has removed all the stitches. The wound is only to her skin. They didn't have to dig around inside her, so she just has a big cut. No bleeding. We called the vet and asked what to do. They recommended making a cone out of plastic to put around her head. We tried to improvise a few designs. She can wiggle out of anything. We ultimately decided to apply povidone-iodine to the area and leave her alone. She desperately wanted to go back in the regular cage with her sister and her sister seems content to leave her alone, so that's good. We'll apply iodine every few hours.

Welp. :allears:

(They're almost 2 and in great health otherwise, btw)

I've gotten lucky with my rats and they haven't overgroomed their surgical sites, but my vet uses internal sutures and then surgical glue. it works really well for them.

I took the new girls in to get checked out and scheduled them for spays monday. finky is also getting her 3rd mammary mass removed! 4th surgery overall. poor baby. she's doing amazing though.

my vet says she does a spay w/ just the ovaries and does a small incision on either side of their abdomen (she called it a lumbar-something; she learned of it from a friend of hers that does a lot of surgeries on lab rats) so it's less intrusive and stressful than going through their belly with a big incision. it also helps with the whole 'organs everywhere' thing.

my vet is so good

Hey all, been doing a little research and have a few questions about rats as potential pets;

Do they have very regular sleep schedules? I work strange hours, I’m basically at home and awake from 10am-3pm and then from 11pm-3am. Obviously I don’t expect them to match my sleep exactly but it would be nice if they’re at least somewhat awake

How strong is the smell? I’m in an apartment so space is fairly limited; meaning the cage would most likely be in my bedroom. Obviously they’re animals so some piss and poo poo is to be expected, I just want to make sure it’s not completely overpowering and that they won’t be freaked out by other scents in the same room (laundry, linen sprays, etc)

Mine do. They're crepuscular (awake in twilight) so mine are usually awake 5-9am and 6-9pm.

Depends, I believe female and neutered male rats have less smell because they don't get so musky in adulthood, but even male rats aren't that bad. I've only bathed one of them once in 18 months because he got really musky.

I share my home office with male rats who sit a couple feet from my head and it's not bad, but I clean them out daily. Generally speaking if you can smell that ammonia sting it's more a problem for them since it's bad for their respiratory health, so you want to be staying on top of that anyway.

They won't be freaked out by other scents, just curious.

What Burnout said, though as someone with changing sleep schedules mine adjust to new schedules okay should it change. Also you get used to the smell, but for the love of god litter train them, it makes cleaning much less hassle.

It's tragic but I'm almost always happy to see this thread not have many recent posts in it.

I have been super fortunate with my current rats. All 4 are nearing a year old, and no signs of respiratory distress or tumors.

If your rats are healthy right now, take a moment to appreciate that, and give them some extra scritches. :3:

luckily both spays and the tumor removal went great and they've all healed up really good so far :unsmith: and they were great at taking meds

finky had to be in a shame cone for about a day bc she was messing with her incision a little too much. the vet made it out of xray film. we couldn't get her to stay in a sock sweater and the kind of bandage tape I have didn't work for a body wrap. it really sucked seeing her in the cone and she was angry but we got through it.

I was feeding her some yoghurt here. I made sure she had a bunch of wet foods (baby food, yoghurt, some rat kibble I soaked in water) available while she had the cone so she could just lick it up.

To this, I lost my mama Ronnie the other day, she had long battled with an unremovable tumor that was benign and didn't effect her quality of life, but in the end she was probably more tumor by weight than rat. She passed peacefully and snuggled by her surviving two daughters and her lovable husband betty.

Our skinny rat got a really bad case of the snuffles (and by snuffles I mean really loving loud and slimey sounding breathing) a while back. She's gone through a couple of antibiotics which weren't enough, but we took her to see a specialist on monday who said that the infection doesn't sound like it's made it to the lungs yet and is for now just an acute URI. She's now on a three week long double whammy of doxycycline and enrofloxacin.

She's being a loving pain about it though. The enrofloxacin is a pill which we can grind up and mix with food. So far, she'll only eat it with banana. This isn't a problem since it helps with runny poops and she's underweight so the extra calories won't do her any harm. Still annoying that it has to be banana, or she'll just sniff it and refuse to eat any.

But the doxycycline is a solution, and she won't have it no matter what it's mixed into. We even tried mixing it with a glucose-based nutritional supplement and she still won't eat it. So now I'm stuck trying to force feed it to her with a syringe twice a day. Doesn't help that her spine is a loving slinky and no matter how I hold her she can still wriggle her little face around like a madrat.

If only it would have been our fat rat, she'd gobble up loving anything.

So, long story short, any tips on how to force feed a rat or get this fucker to take it with some food?

Edit: And who do I have to pay to get one of those cool rear end rat crew tags?

My rats will eat any goddamn thing if it's mixed into carrot-based baby food. That's how I've gotten all their antibiotics into them.

the unfortunate solution we had was melting a little ice cream and mixing meds with it. every rat we have loves that.

we tried yoghurt, baby foods (mostly applesauce-based), and juice. none were as easily taken as ice cream!

we used coffee ice cream because that's what we have on hand pretty often. I feel like the coffee flavor is pretty strong and helps cover the medicine taste. probably not the best or healthiest choice lol
