how do frigates work exactly? I always see "hireable frigates" that I can highlight with the trackpad but I can't work out how to interact with them

Do you have a freighter? I don't think you can interact with them until you do.

If you have a freighter, you can fly close to a frigate with a green nav point and hail it with the radio in the quick menu. This will let you buy it and add it to your fleet. Once you have frigates you can land on your freighter, build a fleet control room, and use the guy on the bridge (not the captain, the guy standing in the center next to the hologram console) to send it on missions. These missions take an hour or a few and bring in credits and random drops of semi-rare items. You also have to build frigate fuel in your freighter's inventory for this.

In my last save I kept a spare starship in my Freighter stocked with all the materials repairs needed, so I could just fly that out to repair stuff. It was fairly trivial to keep that one starship stocked up, even if it never left the immediate vicinity of the freighter.

I.. haven’t been able to figure this out. How do you repair them? I’ve just been sending them out until they’re destroyed. They’re the greatest heroes of all. :patriot:

Edit: wait a sec, based on what I’m getting from other posts, it looks like you just fly up to them... I’ll try that.

If a freighter comes back damaged, you can land on it and several (3-5) points within its navigable area will be marked as damaged. You can interact with these and slot resources into them to get them working again. This takes several minutes even if you have everything on hand, much longer if you have to go hunt something down, and generally is far too involved and tedious for something you're expected to repeat every so often for as long as you're playing the game.

Got it.. thanks! Yea, it's tedious, and several of the corners (especially near the bow) are buggy and i can't just run over them, i have to jetpack hop. Great stuff. Maybe I'll just resume being a bad captain (unless they're S-class).

Another question.. is this smoking ship thing a bug? It comes and goes. If i land on a planet, my ship may still be smoking, but then if i explore a bit and recall it, it seems to fix it. At least until i get back to my freighter.

Also there’s only so many real surfaces on the frigates, so take a shortcut wrong & you end up in space. Falling... somehow.

Can you position the frigate so you fall towards a planet? And if so can you survive the fall? Aim for water or Save your jet pack til nearing impact maybe.

You can't get them close enough to the planet, and it's almost definitely the case anyway that the frigate is 'faked' in a way that means you could never reach the planet regardless.

I did just that, tried to land on one, got it wrong somehow and my ship got stuck inside a wall, colliding with it until it exploded. I survived that and did the worlds’ longest free-fall to the planet below which luckily was mostly water

Yeah, you can glitch the game into violating the base size limits but there's a good chance an "illegal" build does not survive saving and reloading.

If you make sure you have at least one extra star than the frigate mission requires (and preferably multiple extra) your frigates will basically never get damaged. You can get at least 2 stars pretty easily with 4 specialist ships and a support ship even if they are only C class.

I sent my single one star merchant frigate out three times one day on one star trade missions, and every. single. time

it would make one jump and then frantically call me, holy poo poo captain we got shot up in an ambush/the planet was snakes/the crew got tummyaches, if we keep flying we'll explode, and of course zero profits

so it's been parked in orbit until I can be bothered flying over to replace fuses or sprockets or whatever yet again I guess

Frigates:

- I've never seen an S-Class for sale, I'm 99% sure the only way to get S-Class frigates to keep sending them on missions as they will slowly level up after doing enough missions. Even when they reach S-Class (around 50 missions or so) they will continue to increase their stats every 4-5 missions.
- Every level up has a chance to reduce fuel costs.
- Its worth it to repair them, since it costs 5 minutes, and a few materials to repair each one, whereas a new B-Class frigate can cost millions.
- Higher class Frigates get damaged less often than lower class ones (but they still do, occasionally). Once they reach S-Class, their chance to get damaged stops going down, even as their stats continue to go up.
- More stars in your squad of Frigates = less chance of being damaged. (someone already said, one more star than required is a good rule of thumb).

All in all, you should try to have a fairly diverse portfolio of Frigates, always repair them, and keep sending them out on missions. With my fleet of S-Classes, I only get about one damaged ship for every 15 sent out across the 5 missions and in return I pocket anywhere from 5 - 20,000,000 in credits and loot.

I stand corrected: after 300 hours of this game, and probably 100 frigates inspected, I came across the first ever S-Class for sale. So, they do exist, and I'd be willing to bet they spawn at the same rate as starships (1% in Med. Econ, 2% in Wealthy Econ.)

I've noticed that if I order my freighter to warp to my location (doing the "summon freighter" thing) any products in my refiner vanish. Does the same happen to any farming I do on the freighter? I was considering setting up a farming operation but if my plants are gonna vanish left and right as i summon my freighter I'll need to create a settlement for it on some planet.
