Except with, y'know, good art. And the crossovers all have something in common (giant robots!) so it doesn't seem quite so disjointed. Besides, Shinji going to school with Koji of Mazinger Z or/and Ryoma of Getter Robo tends to make Shinji less of a wuss.

The Neo Tribeam doesn't hurt imperfect Cell but he can't ignore it. It would have pasted Frieza.

Well, to be fair fusion isn't really a solution for stronger fighters either in a lot of cases. Canon dragonball fusion are: Gotenks - Fucks around a lot and never has a chance to beat his enemy. Vegeto - Would have wiped the floor with his enemy, and accomplished his goals. Zamasu - Was already immortal. Might have avoided being mafuba'd I guess? Vegeto Blue - Defused without doing meaningful damage Kefla - Lost while making Goku more powerful. Gogeta - wrecked broly. So really the only fusion that matters is a Goku based fusion fighting someone that isn't immortal. As it should be.
