The most recent spots appear to confirm:

- Rey fleeing to Acht-to in Kylo's ship and then scuttling it
- Rey and Kylo destroying the Vader shrine in the midst of a fight (possibly through their Force bond)
- Kylo landing on some Sith planet and entering an ominous pyramid-like structure
- A Death Star-like beam striking a planet

There are a few other things as well. Might just be a lot of coincidence, might not be. In any case it feels like the media blitz for this one is a bit restrained for what you would expect for the final movie in a Star Wars trilogy.

Especially commenting on this particular point.

In what universe would a JJ Abrams not leap at the chance to needlessly establish yet another reverential tie to the original trilogy by having the primary protagonist proclaim herself a "Skywalker"? As soon as the title was released, that was the most obvious explanation, even before the leak.

If it’s just cameo to give some wisdom to Rey, it’s not gonna do it for most people. Especially dumb to name your whole movie around a cameo.

A lack of malicious personal bias and animus doesn't imply that there's not structural discrimination or oppression that directly affects how businesses make decisions about how they sell their products in a market.

It's pretty well known at this point that movies with visibly Black or Brown main characters don't do well with Chinese audiences (or in Asian markets in general). This is partially why most animated features with dark skinned main characters turn them into animals or ghosts or some other non-human avatar - helps the bottom line overseas.

it is, of course, meant to parallel Vader in ROTJ. but some people predicted it even before the leaks because it's the only end that makes sense for his character in standard storytelling. it would be too much of a boring bummer for him to die evil but he's done too many bad things to not atone somehow, so he has to be redeemed and then die

Off the top of my head:

- Princess and the Frog
- Spies in Disguise (Will Smith's character is a pigeon for most of the movie)
- Soul (Jaime Foxx's character "dies" and is a Casper-like ghost for most of the movie)
- The Lion King remake (although you could go either way on this one - of course the movie is going to be all animals, because that's what the original was but also Disney was clearly promoting this as their "Black" movie and banking on the majority minority cast to get people to see it)

That's on top of the usual thing of the sassy Black sidekick being some sort of animal in a cartoon movie (Little Mermaid, Mulan, Shrek, Madagascar, etc). I guess things are slowly changing but it is still pretty blatant.

There's been some writing on the...ambivalence.... of foreign audiences to minority characters in major movies: https://qz.com/1226449/a-torture-for-the-eyes-chinese-moviegoers-think-black-panther-is-too-black/. The exception here of course would be the Fast & Furious movies, although I would argue that the cast there represents a very non-threatening sort of multicultural diversity that makes it an easier sell (and the darker skinned people in those movies tend to very rote, stereotyped characters that are mostly in the background anyway so).

Its Coke posted:

I'm not saying it's the only reason, but it's definitely a contributing factor in how marketing decisions are made. In the context of something like Boyega getting shopped out of the posters for a movie in which he's one of the main characters I would say it points to some fairly odious cost-benefit analyses by the folks behind the scenes.

I have no real understanding of Chinese culture or society, but I am not at all surprised that races other than asian (or, due to international influence, white) don't do well there. I highly disagree with whitewashing/excluding minorities from films just to get Chinese money, however, and we'd all be better off if we didn't bother to accommodate those sentiments.

Ugh, so all this is because Abrams's writing is hackneyed lazy derivative crap? Because that's what those leaks suggest the movie is.

It will be very interesting to see what reception of TLJ is like post-TROS. I suspect it will end up looking better in comparison.

Anyways, while whatever happens to slaves in star wars is perfectly legal & ordinary, its obviously morally wrong. What are some examples of it being inconsistent?

Blaming China for Hollywood's anti-Black racism is a common trend but the numbers don't really pan out for Black Panther

https://qz.com/quartzy/1231764/the-story-behind-the-racist-responses-to-black-panther-in-china/

quote:

In the run-up to the release of Marvel’s Black Panther in China last weekend, pundits warned that the movie could only hope to, at best, match Ant-Man’s opening in the region ($43 million). “The themes of most films with largely black casts will not be of interest to Chinese audiences,” USC professor and China specialist Stanley Rosen pronounced, assuring Deadline that the film would underperform.

And yet when Black Panther finally made landfall in China, it blew past all predictions, with a $67 million opening—up there with some of Marvel’s long-running, well-established cinematic franchises, such as Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

This “surprise” success came despite a persistent media narrative with ugly implications, both for China and Hollywood: That Chinese racism will destroy any chance for success for a film with black leads.
...
One might think Black Panther’s blockbuster opening would’ve been enough to reassure Hollywood that China is ready for a black superhero, but instead the persistent narrative about Chinese racism has simply moved on to other fronts—focusing on early reactions on anonymous review sites such as Douban, where the film has to date earned a 6.7 out of 10 rating. This middling score, the story goes, is due to China’s antipathy toward black actors—but that’s actually a higher rating than those for Captain America: The First Avenger, at 6.5, and The Wolverine, at 6.2.

Even that's giving Rey too much credit. As per usual, she doesn't actually do anything. She stabs him while he's reeling from the death of Leia (lol), heals him with her new healing power (lol^2), but then she leaves. It's the ghost of Han who apparently shows up to give him a big redemption speech.
