Oh come on, a bunch of photos of apparently consenting adults goofing around drunk isn't "shady".

Having them on a work-owned computer, well, when you're the boss that matters less. And writing off personal home devices as a work expense because "hey, I might remote in sometimes" is one of those "everybody does it" things which is why the board didn't care. (Doing the same with the home internet bill not unheard of but good luck if it ever gets audited.) We're not talking about anything subject to FOI here... as far as I know.

Aren't a few of the other details here kind of laughable? Like the images flashing on screen being "required" to transfer them, holding onto a personal copy of "thousands" of the images despite some efforts and instruction to destroy them, and (this is why I'm replying in the first place) my favourite, the line where the Star reporter reviewed "more than 1,000 of these photos". Just doing due diligence!

Doug Ford canned the Hamilton LRT and the announcement turned into a total shitshow where the transport minister declined to do the announcement, had to retreat to a govt building across the street to get away from protestors, then left from a parking garage with police escort.

It's worth noting that their reason for canceling the LRT was because costs had 'ballooned', where what had actually happened was that they decided to include the 30-year operating costs in the construction costs.

It’s really transparently obvious that the Conservatives are trying to get back at a city that voted NDP last election. They’d also rather see more roads for cars than public transit, and this plays into their fiscally responsible nonsense. It’s a straight up hit job by Doug Ford just to feed his ego. Such a loving shame.

Kenney added some kind of "we can immediately cancel the funding for any reason" clause into the Calgary and Edmonton LRT expansion funding, which was already approved. And also delayed the provision of the funding.

There's been pretty much endless debates and every city councillor from outside the downtown wards has done everything in their power to stall or delay the project as much as humanly possible. The last city election was basically yet another referendum on whether we should do LRT, even when Wynne was saying that the money was going to LRT-level improvements or Hamilton would get none of it.

Or if you ask right-wing mountain-dwelling idiots in Hamilton, the project failed because everyone hates the idea of not treating our main streets like 5-lane highways straight through the middle of the city, and also Matthew Green hosed everything up by arguing that LRT drivers should be unionized.

I'm especially pissed off about this being cancelled since the commercial area around my house has been completely obliterated by Metrolinx purchasing up all the properties and shutting down the businesses, to the point where maybe 25% of storefronts are not boarded up around my house.

in terms of what Hamilton itself could have done better, probably have a mayor who's effective at anything other than covering up sewage leaks and arresting anarchists would be a good start.

yeah, hamilton has a big disparity (unsurprisingly, largely based on municipal boundaries erased by amalgamation) between the old City and the suburbs in terms of priorities. Downtown is focusing on revitalization and trying to build up public transit, but the idiots outside just want downtown to be highways to get back to their McMansions faster. It's a loving mess. There's even a chicken and the egg problem where the Ancaster/Flamborough idiots won't pay for public transit in general, which means there's no money to even think about extending public transit out to them.

wow it's almost like amalgamation of urban centres with surrounding suburbs was specifically designed to make it so fygm suburbanites could overwhelm downtown voters in municipal elections

Eisenburger was elected for a single term before LRT was really a thing and got nothing done because he is not a consensus builder or a person with any real solid leadership qualities. he ran again on a “I dunno how I feel about LRT” platform in a 3 person race between him, a longtime left wing council member who was pro LRT and an anti-LRT candidate in 2012? I think and he won before quickly pivoting to a pro-LRT position after assuming office.

he was just as ineffectual at consensus building so the battle over LRT between different ward counsellors was very public and full of mudslinging both ways. this was not helped by a provincial government who would not fully commit to funding the line and the loving clowns at metrolinx that changed the plans numerous times in the following sequence:

-reduced the number of stops from the original plan and shortened the line a few km, ending literally at an abandoned motel lot they expropriated. it was previously known for its drug and sex trafficking.

-added a spur down a busy, gentrifying street to a go station that was just built using provincial money a couple clicks from another station. this new station can only run trains at rush hour cause the province doesn’t have line rights. the old station still runs trains at the same time.

-realized this was stupid and took that out, adding the line back to the end to make a terminus at the original planned location with a pedestrian accommodation to get people to the old GO station. the new station was already built and was used by former city council member, current local MPP, and giant turd Donna Skelly as an example of government waste when campaigning in the last election (she is actually right)

-re added old stops again

- started expropriating property despite no confirmed plan to start building.

while all this was occurring the city had woefully underfunded the local transit, causing it to be one of the only municipalities in the province to see a decrease in ridership since the late 2000s. they implemented a pilot bus only lane on part of the LRT route, which was by all metrics successful, but decided to end it early after complaints and a lack of commitment to see it through from local ward councillors who simultaneously gushed over LRT. metrolinx wouldn’t say who would actually be responsible to run the LRT, and the city told them even with the money to build it they probably couldn’t afford to run it cause TAXES and poo poo so it was controversial when they announced it would be privatized.

basically this brought us to the last election which was essentially a referendum on LRT where every seat on the route went to pro-LRT politicians, every seat off went to anti-LRT politicians, solving none of the animosity of before.

metrolinx also had some staff that really thought the ridership numbers anticipated would not justify LRT over BRT in some data that came from FOI requests. ridership would have been fine anyways probably but it just further entrenched the idea in some people’s minds that the LRT was a vanity project

it was a failure of leadership on all levels. and the other projects have come to fruition with far less baggage and controversy. this is 12 years in the making at this point and the only thing that has been done is expropriation, some basic preliminary work, and a shitload of spending on staff who didn’t accomplish much of anything.

I know it’s easy to blame the “right wing mountain suburban chuds” but there are some legitimate grievances from people in those areas that this once in a lifetime infrastructure money was going to a small geographic location. the BLAST transit plan that started this whole thing envisioned rapid transit throughout the city. people could be legitimately aggrieved that all the money was going to the most expensive means to implement transit available in a small area while their transit had become increasingly unreliable over that timespan. the fact that the city cared so little about its current transit system and had no plans to fund other lines after this funding made them lose legitimacy in the eyes of many people.

Thanks for the lowdown. I thought it was extremely weird that they'd be expropriating property before they actually started construction and as it turns out it was general stupidity. Awesome!

Hamilton’s transit is called the HSR

i would in theory be down with a BRT system.

i have absolutely no illusions whatsoever that the funding that was supposed to go to the LRT will never actually be used, on a BRT system or anything except maybe slapping a coat of paint on bus shelters. We'll have years of commissions and task forces until everyone forgets that there was money around in the first place, or we waste it all with nothing to show for it.
