Well Manicured Man posted:I didn't say anything about how she looked. I agree that the biggest problem is the dialogue. They had to write all of her scenes around the few lines they had recorded and even then everything she says has this wierd non-sequitur disconnect from the rest of the scene like the writers just couldn't find a way to get from point A to point B even though they had point B already and could put point A anywhere they liked. I said it in a previous post but it was like watching Lassie. "What's that Leia? You want me to use the force?" "Yes." "Should I go help my friends against the Sith and bring BB-8 with me?" "Never underestimate a droid."

For some reason the Leia puppet reminds me of SMG's one-time plan to recut TFA and have Kylo speak in battle droid quotes from the prequels

I went in thinking that the Leia scenes were going to be almost entirely handled the way The Crow handled Brandon Lee's death. Just a bunch of shots with her face obscured in darkness or a ton of behind the head shots. The actual result left me wondering if they were doing Rogue One style CGI for her. Utterly eerie.

I'm really confused about why the Emperor would even need a fleet of star destroyers. There's already a fleet of star destroyers, it's called The First Order and it rules the galaxy, and don't they all worship the old Empire or something?

Lets make all these latest and greatest star destroyers with death star tech but they can't fly without a command signal so just make extra sure you protect the command mcguffin. Like every movie with a huge army that just instantly dies if you destroy the mcguffin but the good guys army is OK if they destroy the good side equivalent which may not even exist. e: also lets put these star destroyers into the ground with their crews for some reason. e2: also don't give these star destroyers any names or identifiers so when we hear chatter on the command ship about some of them getting blowed up there's no way for the command to know which actual ship they are talking about. At least give them a number or something. e3: why did clone snoke have a disfigured face? Why are the clones defective from the start? Like the Emperor's big plan should surely just be to waltz into the Supreme Leader's throne room and say "I'm back, and this is my throne now" and force lightning anyone who disagrees. Why add a whole other fleet of star destroyers and make it more complicated?!

I've been thinking more about who the hell it could have been that arrived in a gigantic fleet to help the Resistance fight Palpatine at the end of the movie, and I think there's only one clear answer: the First Order. We know the First Order rules the galaxy and that practically no one actually dislikes it enough to support the Resistance against it. We also know that what Palpatine's putting together is the "Final Order", a which is openly a dark side cult and seems to have a lot of constant capital in the form of a starship foundry or whatever but no one to actually pilot the dang ships. So it's a small splinter faction of the First Order led by fanatics like Pryde who actually go over to Palpatine's side and try to take over the galaxy with brute force, and the rest of the First Order - the sensible moderates - who rally to stop it. I also suspect that the wizard at the end of this movie was a clone who got too big for his britches, because the Palpatine of the prequel and original trilogy wouldn't have given a gently caress about these branding questions. He was very happy to preside over "mere" unchecked capitalism without amphitheaters of chanting cultists or pillars of skulls or whatever.

The First Order crewed the ships. Early in the movie they talk about upping child conscription and then the ship that blows up the planet has a child captain. The First Order were told by Palpatine they would get the ships in like the 2nd scene of the movie. Better question, who the gently caress was building them? Did Sheev start construction before ROTJ? Genuinely room for a cool canon answer if he has multiple contingency plans. Gripe though, couldn't they have just made the ships have the giant gently caress-off cannons from the dreadnought? The idea that Death Star tech is now the size of a corvette and is mass-produceable is dumb. They didn't need to up the stakes on everything. 1,000 Star Destroyers is already daunting.

Yeah Rey said they’d have the galaxy taken over in two weeks Which doesn’t make all that much sense considering time dilation but time dilation isn’t in Star Wars I guess

I'm in the minority, but the subtext about the First Order is actually super logical with the addition of this movie. The New Republic let their guard down while a splinter group invests exclusively in military tech. When they're ready they conduct a decapitating strike on the government and then attempt a purely military takeover. Unlike the Empire which had a veneer of legitimacy and utilized existing power structures, the First Order attempts to rule exclusively through fear and are noticeably smaller than the Empire was and have to forcibly conscript their soldiers.

Yes, but it makes no sense that there are no other standing militaries (Republic or otherwise) anywhere in the galaxy except for the fleet that was stationed at the capitol. Of course, maybe the First Order never really expanded very far outside their original boundaries over the past year. In Force Awakens they seemed much more concerned with getting rid of the Resistance than with any plans for galaxy-wide conquest. Who knows?

Standing militaries have never made sense in the Star Wars universe past the OT. OT was all Empire rules the galaxy, ragtag group of Rebels form to stop them. So of course the Empire is overwhelming and the Rebels are scrappy underdogs. PT is Republic rules the galaxy...somehow doesn't have a navy or army until some shady offers to make some clones? And also the separatists are just made up of robots? ST New Republic maybe rules the galaxy, but has no fleet bigger than whatever is in orbit above their capital? What is the Resistance? I guess the First Order is actually enough Star Destroyers to forcibly occupy the galaxy and not just the 10 along with Snoke's blinged out ride? it's frustrating that the Star War side of Star Wars is ridiculous aside from the OT. I would be a lot more forgiving on JJ's trash if he'd have given us something like the Battle of Scariff which is the purest form of Star Wars porn.
