Saying Trotsky "disagreed" with the party leadership is putting it lightly. Trotsky's downfall came because politics doesn't suddenly stop after the revolution. You just can't be a bad politician in a contest for power, and decision making within the party will never be a simple process of abstractly debating the merits of a policy within the party organs. At some level people need a reason to support you beyond the idea that your proposals are obviously and self-evidently the best. if you disagree with the ideas of the left opposition that’s fine, I’m just saying that people you disagree with who are committed to revolution prolly shouldn’t be murdered. like all the Bolsheviks Stalin included for that matter gave their lives to revolution and sacrificed almost everything they had to realize it. it’s kinda sad how modern day revolutionaries like cheerlead the Stalinist terror where those same Bolsheviks were sent to their deaths singing the internationale. imagine trying to recruit people to a movement where that’s the legacy to look forward to. the purges and assasinations and executions can’t just be waved away they were the thermodor of the Russian revolution

There's a big middle ground between "kill anybody who doesn't follow the party line" and "being a revolutionary means you get a 'get out of party discipline free' card."
