If it's stapled to the backs of the studs every 4 feet, then that's actually allowed.

Explain to us how that is a likely possibility.

I'm fairly positive it's just gunk on the wire but I will absolutely double check this when I get home tonight!

I'm also pretty sure they're not stapled on the back side. It's like a total of 10 feet and since the wall's already ripped apart, I'll just drill some holes in the studs and run it the right way. Did not know that would be allowed per code. I guess in the case where you'd pre-wire everything before tilting up the wall?

e: at least it's better than what on found when I first started ripping apart walls last fall! Based on what I found, it seems like someone first built a storage/utility area. These builders used conduit for electrical. At some later point, the rest of the basement was finished. These builders used romex, but everything seems to have been done competently. Then at some point the homeowner decided they wanted another outlet and did this behind some paneling:

this looks correct right?

note that in the first picture, the upper outlet is supported entirely by the romex stub from the lower gang box and both were only "secured" with some screws directly into the drywall

Such graceful, delicate creatures.
Google Streetview of a house I pass on my way to work sometimes.

It appears that two houses backed into each other and got stuck. Or maybe someone was just playing with the "flip horizontal" tool and it made it to the final plans.

Kinda looks like they started as a mobile home, built a house to some plans, then thought "hey that worked out pretty well let's see if I can do it again! Maybe throw in a fireplace!"

During mating, it’s perfectly normal for the houses to be “tied” like this for a while. Do not try to separate the houses prematurely, as doing so can injure them both.

Also don't throw a bucket of cold water at them. This might cause permanent water damage.

I only just now realized that the extension is mode out of ceramic *bricks* not sticks and siding. Which makes those supports even scarier.
