I once told one of my professors that they were teaching the class wrong by focusing on a genre-focused analysis model of Latin American texts instead of a more valid post-structuralist model and I wish twitter was around because she got super mad at me and I want evidence.

I still stand by the fact that I was right. Reading "The Lost Steps" as a "travel narrative" is a waste of goddamn time.

When you make a post that's like "I try to be sincere and then people just post dumb poo poo at me" you kinda have to expect that people are going to post dumb poo poo at you.

It's like showing up to school with a note from your mother telling everyone not to pick on you. It's just going to have the opposite effect.

2666 has finally gotten its claws into me. I liked part 3 a lot. I’ve gotten over the amorphous surrealism of certain sections that was previously bogging me down and kind of realized a lot of it is Bolano doing some kind of David lynch impression, which is aiding the read.

Now, the part about the crimes. Wish me luck

Bolano is a hard rec from me in general and I think its The Savage Detectives that has a chapter where he just starts insulting every other Latin American writer and its humorously savage. As I recall he said Vargas Llosa became a right wing ideologue because he was mad about not winning enough awards.

If I hadn’t already read the savage detectives I don’t think I would have made it this far in 2666. Savage detectives is generally a lot more fun, and gave me enough faith in Bolano to stick with 2666.

If you’re interested in more experimental/avant garde modern lit you gotta check him out.

Well, the baseline is probably the Four Great Novels of Chinese Literature (tm)

Romance of the Three Kingdoms
The Water Margin
Journey to the West
Dream of the Red Chamber

Whats fun about those books is that not only are they good, they are also essentially the ur-texts of most East Asian pop culture. Like, after reading these books, especially Journey to the West, you will recognize references in East Asian pop culture everywhere.

For more contemporary, Mo Yan is fun. I also liked Yan Lianke.

And yeah Mo Yan is great, I'm an especially huge fan of Republic of Wine which I've read twice

Contemporary Chinese Lit can be interesting because it tends to be "safely subversive" in a way that you dont often see.

It's a very interesting style of social criticism within the confines of not upsetting the social order. Mo Yan is a fascinating example of it because his writing manages to be simultaneously deeply critical towards and yet also obediently loyal to the political status quo.
