Maybe he's spinning his wheels because he's spent his entire life as a mangaka only to be considered a punchline/extremely strange person while Paru has already achieved worldwide acclaim with her debut manga.

that's not really accurate for Itagaki senior, Baki's been pretty popular internationally forever (the Netflix series is actually the second time it's blown up in the west, the old-rear end OVA got pretty popular in the early 90s and a lot of people remember Baki similarly to, like, Cyber City Oedo or Demon City Shinjuku)

if anything, him being a punchline or mostly known as weird is a more recent thing, Baki used to just kind of be one of the old mainstay punchman manga before people started really picking up on how batshit bonkers and meme-able it is

especially given he seems to be a pretty nice dude and a good dad, if he's doing it deliberately, he's probably just doing it to see if he can't give his daughter a little boost

Baki being weird is why it's well received. Otherwise it'd just be like that other fighty manga some people recommended itt which is boring as hell

pretty sure Baki is successful as hell and one of the big mainstays of manga in Japan

which is why they allow him to pull off this current bullshit

I haven't gotten around to reading Baki yet (I really should, just stuck my head into this thread out of curiousity) but I've seen some Beastars fans joke that the latest chapters (especially the newest one whose scanlation just dropped) are ghostwritten by Keisuke

Itagaki Paru started an autobiographic manga and between her father being represented as an empty dinner chair and a big shadowy man, really not looking good for him. I wonder if that was written before she disclosed who he was? Doesn't look like it, though

It goes entirely chronologically, except for the OVA, which is kind of a spinoff but still worth watching at any time.

The original anime series is worth watching with subs from the beginning. It has a certain charm with the corny music and budget animation. The voice acting is perfect for the characters. I kind of wish I could reset my brain and watch it all over again, because I've read so much ridiculous bullshit in the manga that the original series feels like a vanilla anime in comparison now.

Baki the Grappler and Baki Dou (NOt Baki Dou 2018) both have incomplete translations and you could probably jump in anywhere with this backstory that I’ll write up for you:

The strong is the beautiful!! Baki loves to fight.

The new Netflix adaptation has definitely pushed it into another level of fame in the West. A lot of my friends who just watch general popular shounens are now Baki fans.

It's kinda like what David Productions adaptation of Jojo did for the series. It was popular in Japan but only had a cult following outside of it. Baki isn't quite on that level yet but hopefully it's rise continues.

Anyway the latest trailer looks good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7v7abk_Kg4
