The Italian job (1969), I had seen the mark wahlberg version and I had no idea the original was practically a slapstick comedy. Lot of fun and beautifully shot but that one song can go straight to music hell

Also it struck me that wes Anderson's must have loved this movie. The computer guy was the one part that fell really flat for me and felt more out of a bad 80s comedy

The Irishman - Youth CGI is getting better but still noticeable, and it can't change body type or shape, so you don't get Taxi Driver / Godfather II Dinero, you get old Dinero with young Dinero skin. That being said, the effect seemed to work better on Pesci.

It was so jarring to hear him call DeNiro "kid" in some of the flashbacks because DeNiro still looks - at best - 55 even when he's supposed to be much younger. Otherwise I loved The Irishman because it has all the moral rot of Casino or Goodfellas with none of the glitz and glamour. I think Nicholson's portrayal as Hoffa was way better than Pacino's but the dynamic between Hoffa, Sheeran, and Bufalino was perfect.

The Irishman, I’m so bored and there’s still an hour and a half to go. There’s nothing new here, it’s just more Scorsese old white gangster men talking and killing each other with historic tv footage spliced in. What a waste of everyone’s time this swan song is. Wild at heart. The most sentimental Lynch I've seen so far. Really showed off his mastery of light and darkness with the repeated flame motifs. Can't get enough Nic cage and Laura Dern, definitely got enough Willem Dafoe

My neighbor totoro was delightful. Great to see that even 30 years ago studio ghibli was as assiduous with their animation and attention to detail. Things like the cart at the beginning slipping off the road momentarily and satsuki walking around on her knees. Very cozy film.

i'll admit that the Irishman was so loving long that it took me like three days to watch since I can barely sit down and watch a 90 minute movie at it is but, well, a movie about a weirdly emotionless guy who loves murder and unions is appealing to me. sue me. anyway the old men stuff made sense cuz its framed as an old man telling you about the good old days. of course hes gonna waste time on a bunch of poo poo.

Mad Max Fury road. i remember going to see it with my dad, sneaked off to the bathrroom while crappy trailers played and i smoked black tar heroin on top of some wax off foil in the bathroom. the buzz and the title screen was probably the best experience while i was baked as hell and some how not nodding off. the flamethrower guitar was awesome, the whole drat movie was awesome.

Got the criterion Godzilla anthology for Christmas. So I watched Godzilla vs hedorah for the first time. Didn’t care for the Godzilla suit. Animated interstitials definitely made it feel like a product of its time. The music was at odds with the on screen action. I think the only thing I really enjoyed was the gnarly implications of hedorah just killing swathes of people. The aftermaths of it just flying by and leaving skeletons in its wake. Pretty at odds with the rest of the movie like the child protagonist and Godzilla using atomic breath to fly around

The Color Out of Space is incredibly pretty, does body horror really well, and is probably the best Lovecraft movie ever made.

I watched Parasite and thought it was great on a technical level, and OK as far as the story went. Then I read some stuff of people breaking down hidden meaning and symbolism in it and decided I need to pay attention to movies way more closely. Although I usually just watch movies for the cinematography and score am I weird

1917 was really drat good. Probably the best "war" movie I've ever seen. What's the saying about anti-war movies only being able to glorify war? This is the exception that proves the rule. Also I agree about Parasite being technically brilliant because I didn't really connect to it as much as I thought I was going to, or even as much as I think I should have given my politics. I'll have to watch it again someday.

No, people who do close readings on film online are often morons and just make stuff up to sound cool. the thesis of parasite is very clear and its a fun movie with a sprinkling of class conscious violence in it. isnt that house beautiful? one of the best realized film spaces in recent memory for me.

i saw the Assistant which i didnt know existed until yesterday and had no real expectations about and its quite sick. a day-in-the-life horror parable about corporate culture that was super restrained and gut wrenching, i would hihgly recommend.

Knives Out was alright, thought it was going to be better. I had the same reaction to The Last Jedi and Looper. I guess cool ideas marred by subpar execution is Rian Johnson's calling card.
