For every worldly, educated American who has a finger of the pulse of what's happening in the world, there seems to be numerous multiple who are literally the 'I just wanna grill for god's sake' meme and are completely ignorant to everything that's going on around them. They work their day job, go home to relatively a uneventful home life, take their kids to sport on the weekend, and their idea of an exciting yearly holiday is tailgating their local sports team to the next state or something.

It's wilful ignorance borne of the privilege of being in a country that can recklessly smash its way through whatever is in its path due to its influence, and in doing so ends up providing them just enough that they're comfortable without ever really developing an interest in the world around them or any great aspirations that may push them outside their little bubble.

Sadly, the masks do a much better job protecting everyone else from you than the other way around. If most of the people you've been encountering weren't wearing a mask, that'd certainly be a part of it. Best of luck getting through this if it does turn out to be COVID-19.

If that happens, you're going to see a shitload of teachers, admin, support, and maintenance staff getting infected and potentially dying because they were put into a situation where they were not being protected. Also parents who have kids who get infected and bring it home will probably try their hand at a lawsuit as well. School boards are going to have to make some tough decisions as well as the government.

1. Do you pretend that nothing's changed and accept that Covid will be swirling around schools like poo poo in a Jacuzzi?
2. Do you attempt to try and social distance in a classroom that has already been packed to what firecode allows?
3. Do you try and find additional floor space so that you can attempt social distancing in classrooms?
4. Do you set up a schedule where students and teachers work in shifts (by day) so that you can social distance without additional floor space?

Conventional schooling with Covid and no vaccine cannot happen. We still don't know about antibody immunity and how long it actually lasts, or what segment of the population actually has any immunity. If a Vaccine does happen, you're going to see a lot of people trying to homeschool as they're going to be 100% required if you want your child to go to a school (public or private).

We've had a fairly successful lockdown in Australia so far and some states have already started re-opening schools. In NSW high schools they brought back the senior students starting May 11 and the other year levels have had partial or staggered re-openings. They're still pretty cautious about the virus though, and several schools have already had to temporarily evacuate after a student tested positive: https://www.theage.com.au/national/nsw/waverley-college-evacuates-after-student-tests-positive-to-covid-19-20200526-p54wfm.html

quote:

"We wish to advise you that Waverley College has been informed by NSW Health that a student on the Senior Campus has tested positive for COVID-19," the school's message to parents said.

"We understand that the student has not been in contact with any boy from the Junior School.

"As a precaution we are sending all senior students home effective immediately. Junior students should remain on the Junior campus, unless they are a sibling of a senior student."

The Waverley College spokeswoman said the evacuation had been "very orderly" as the school had put together a plan and practised it last week.

"The school is very prepared for this, being [in] a coronavirus hotspot," she said.

quote:

NSW Health is working with the school to identify and notify close contacts of the student, who was not on campus on Tuesday.

"NSW Health is communicating with that list of people," the school spokeswoman said. "They've been instructed to isolate and also be tested."

The school will be closed for deep cleaning before it is re-opened within two days.

It's all a delicate balancing act and if conditions deteriorated they'd have to re-evaluate and possibly wind things back. They're cautiously optimistic but still extremely concerned and are willing to act quickly if needed. Contrasting that with the situation in the US where the lockdown has been lovely and there's a lack of testing and institutions seem slow to react .......... I have no loving idea how you guys are going reopen schools with any semblance of safety or caution.
