Also, kinda insane just how powerful hybrids really are. Like we were told that Primordial Devils are nothing to gently caress with and Santa Claus was being powered by a primordial one, and she still loving got curb-stomped by some crazy kid in 2 chapters.

Denji is too dumb to feel fear which probably didn't hurt, and Chainsaw is apparently the anti-Devil Devil, so that's probably a bit more skewed than, say, Katana or Projectile would have/did perform.

Reze probably could have pulled it off.

I honestly don't think Denji is that dumb. I think what happened is a combination of Denji still remembering how he first kicked the bucket and Kishibe going Garp on his rear end.

Denji is pretty much the perfect person to have the chainsaw power. His lovely upbringing means he has no fear of death or pain. Barring some exceptions, like that Darkness attack, his chainsaws seem to be capable of cutting through nearly anything. Not only that but by revving his heart cord engine the moment before he dies, he can self-revive, becoming a perpetual fightman machine as long as there's blood available. None of the other hybrids introduced thus far have this kind of ability, so they actively try to avoid death despite also having the ability to revive.

Santa couldn't comprehend Denji's strategy, which was basically kamikazing yourself to give big hugs, but it makes perfect sense really.

Dropping out implies he was ever in school.

His formal schooling consists one math lesson, the English phrase "Big rear end", and naked swimming lessons.

He's not entirely illiterate, thanks to manga and pornography, but he doesn't even have a kindergarten level education in anything except demon slaying. (Note how the only kanji he recognizes is 金玉. Even the level of education you'd expect for a kid the age he was when his dad died would cover basic stuff like 五, 人 and 台.)

Nah, doesn't fit with his enthusiasm for Enoshima. He's still got his appetite, the things that made him happy before still make him happy, and he's got the energy to do some pretty difficult and tiring tasks, including social interactions.

Denji's just feeling unhappy because he's stuck taking care of his idiot buddy and her PTSD instead of getting to go on a sexy beach vacation with Makima.

You know

The thing with power goes from being heartwarming to just a little suspect when I remember almost the exact same thing happened in Fire Punch.

except for the part where fire punch's main character boned a person who looked identical to his sister, i'm hoping denji does not do that.

This is kind of off-topic, but does anyone know how many devils of specifically man-made objects there are? The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the Gun, Katana and Chainsaw devils. Maybe the Ghost devil, if you interpret 'man-made' broadly.

We've also seen Crossbow and Bomb as hybrids. Then there's Doll, and Kishibe has contracts with knife and needle.

Plenty of human made devils, including some top rank ones.

D'oh!

e: I was curious because the only devils willing to merge with a partner - Chainsaw, Katana, and come to think of it Bomb and Quanxi's devil - are all devils of manmade objects. 'Natural' devils like Shark, Blood and Violence all seem to go for possessing corpses instead. So it made me wonder if there was a difference in how the two types related to humans.

There was some stuff I liked about Fire Punch but yeah overall it was just offputting. Not just because it was dark, Devilman Crybaby is one of my favorite anime ever. It was just... Offputting.

I get what you mean, Fire Punch has it's moments but it's grim dark at all times. Chainsaw Man, while don't pulling any punches either, manages to balance it's dark moments with good comedy and great characters, making it a much more interesting manga in my opinion.

It also probably helps that Denji is a much better person.

Yes, he's a violent, horny dumbass who only seems to have social graces at all because he's being compared to Power, but he's basically a good guy, with a soft spot for women in trouble (Even though pretty much every woman he meets is trouble). In the second chapter, he offers to throw everything he ever wanted away to help a kid he just met. (Which, interestingly, Makima seemed to approve of.)

Having a sympathetic protagonist changes the tone a lot.

The section at the beginning when he talks about how long it took for him to begin to cope with the pain was very vivid. The man can draw some violence

It definitely has some of the DNA of those older manga that took sudden shifts in their story direction.

Yeah, it's a running theme of this little arc.

Quanxi makes it her life philosophy. Meanwhile, two of her fiends are the Eel, who continually tells people facts they don't want to know (like the sushi information), and Halloween, who destroys her enemies with knowledge overload.

That (and her news anchor story) all comes together with Yoshida's talk about how he figured out that there's something sketchy... but he's not sticking his nose in, to add up to end Kishibe's part of the arc with him refusing to take off his blindfold, because he doesn't want to know any more.

Some knowledge that isn't existentially terrifying, though?

Chainsaw Man is getting a special promotion with a life sized statue of Denji. Just the reassuring face we all need to help us get through these trying times.

I finished Fire Punch. Mostly started it so I could just read through the thread without getting spoiled or actually understanding the talk about it in this thread, but it turned out to be pretty good (the disturbing content wasn't so bad as I've read much worse)? It was delightfully weird, if a disposable read. loving Star Wars ruining everything, and the series went downhill after Togata bit it.

I love this and the theme of ignorance vs suffering is also personified by Aki. He's shown to be a good and emphatic person with a strong sense of justice and he's also beginning to question Makima's intentions. Due to his nature, I don't think he will choose to remain ignorant like Kishibe. And he's going to suffer for it, big time.

I think Aki has "lost" something in every arc that he's been in

Intro: lost his fight with Denji due to Denji's superior strategy
Bat: Gundevil flash back shown at the end of the arc
Eternity: Stabbed
Katana: Himeno
Bomb: Colleagues
International assassins: arm and more colleagues

there's also the Future devil in his eye that shows him the future/truth but they're always lovely

The whole reason the Future devil went with Aki was because he wanted front row seats to whatever lies ahead of Aki. t’s probably not going to go well for that poor guy.
