Ramrod Hotshot posted:What are some movies where there's a faintly alluded to c-plot brewing for most of the runtime that suddenly explodes into view at the film's conclusion? The best example of this I can think of is Gangs of New York where the interpersonal rivalries are suddenly engulfed by this massive anti-draft riot that's been just under the surface until it reaches a boiling point. Joker is very similar in this regard. Once upon a time in Hollywood is another recent example. Many Cohen brothers movies are like this, although it's often several c-plots that are being juggled until they come to a head. Interesting question. I suppose Rocky Horror fits to a degree in that Frank-n-furter isn't exactly the unquestioned, beloved leader he appears to be and there's only small hints until it becomes the climax of the movie. The "real" ending for Clue maybe? Psycho? (Plot A is the Janet Leigh theft, plot B is Norman Bates or maybe his mother is a murderer, plot C is that Norman Bates is the mother?) Angel Heart? The Sixth Sense? I feel like most of these aren't great fits. The last few especially are largely "here's a big twist / reveal at the end of the film".

Oh wait, That Obscure Object of Desire (also this is in my all-time top 10 and as I have excellent taste that means it is a great movie and everyone should watch it)

is there anything similar to Švankmajer's Faust out there? the stop-motion animation/puppetry isn't primarily what i'm thinking of, even though it's great. i mostly like the pastiche of theatre, opera, and literature combined with the total indifference to realism and the sense of doom. Simon of the Desert is probably the closest thing to it that I've seen, which is another favorite

What are some movies where the movie is much more than or very different from its reputation? I'm thinking like Rocky, where it's not a boxing movie (there's like 3 minutes of boxing in the movie), Jaws, Psycho.

Strictly speaking, you're right because contrary to how it was experienced when it was released (I saw it opening night and knew nothing about it other than it was a QT script and directed by the Desperado director. And I was drunk and high. That was a loving ride), everyone who hasn't seen it probably knows it as that vampire movie and would probably be surprised just how straight the first half is played.

I probably didn't see it till it was on free UK tv in the early 00's and i remember thinking nothing unusual about the vampires its hard to remember if i knew the twist already or if i was just a dumb 14 year old who wasn't paying attention but that movie is rad.

Extremely tasteful, not erotic in any way - but just the idea of something existing outside the norm is enough to cause consternation in reactionaries. Like when a certain news outlet flipped out over Wall-e being some sort of environmentalist manifesto.

I see a lot of criticism of Brokeback for its schmaltz and its "bury your gays" trope, both of which have merit. But I've also seen some backlash here for being overrated, which I don't agree with. It's a really well-made and acted melodrama that deserves much of its praise.

It is absolutely one of my most memorable movie going experiences. I could not process what was happening on-screen, my brain just kept saying wtf and trying to make sense of what I was seeing. Much like Clooney et al. It's too bad that after the initial shock and confusion, the actual vampire slaying stuff is kind of sub-par but those first 5 minutes of HOLY poo poo VAMPIRES?? were really something.

Based on the backlash, I thought it was like a softcore porno featuring 2 dudes, but really it's just a fantastic drama, with more straight bedroom scenes than otherwise. One of the best movies I've ever seen. Good pulls. I guess The Crying Game would fit too although I think overall it's pretty meh as a movie.

Any zombie movie fits the bill with a strong personal preference for [REC] (there are plenty of kills and swarming but maybe not to the extent you're looking for though). Um, what's that Korean monster movie from 8 years ago or so Aliens, obviously. But none of these are really en masse per se. Maybe that Brad Pitt zombie movie? I got bored and turned it off halfway through though.

Those are good suggestions, though I'm a little burned out on zombie movies. I'm looking for a "my god they've broken through" kind of vibe. Aliens would be perfect, but I'm hoping to find something I haven't seen before

Seven Samurai would qualify, as would The Mist. Zulu (1964, with Michael Caine) is a bit problematic, racially, but it's great. Left-field suggestion: Cujo.

How have I never looked at this thread before? I haven't seen a really good, capital M Movie in a while, I'm talking artistically valuable and edifying and not just good in the popcorn type of way. Looking at my criticker account (I will never switch to Letterboxd!) here's the last few movies of the type I'm talking about: In The Mood For Love Portrait Of A Lady On Fire Harakiri A Hidden Life Parasite First Reformed Eyes Wide Shut Probably very vague but just hit me with something, ideally not by the same director.

I could use some recommendations for stuff to watch with my mam during quarantine. Stuff we've watched lately that she enoyed: The Nice Guys (she thought Gosling was hilarious), M:I Fallout, Inside Man, Collateral, Taking of Pelham 123 (the original), Open Range, Zodiac (though she wasn't happy that they didn't catch him at the end lol). Stuff she said was "ok": Fury Road, Nolan's Batman trilogy, the Bourne trilogy, Blood Diamond, 21 Bridges. Stuff she hated: Inception was the worst film she's ever seen TV wise, she also really enjoyed Elementary, Justified and Bosch, if that helps.
