CodfishCartographer posted:Man, what the gently caress even is Ghostwriter anymore? At first I thought it might be speeding up due to looming cancelation, but I think it just has really weird pacing. It really isn't fond of building up any kind of emotional tension. Ghostwriter somehow manages to speed up and still have nothing happening in it. There's been at least three big timeskips throughout the series and it didn't add anything interesting to the status quo. It really feels like it got told it's being cancelled soon and to wrap poo poo up. If the author wanted us to like the MC, they failed at it. He doesn't stop to ask questions and figure out that manga-related death might be because of overwork. When he asked Aino if she was overworking herself, he took her words that she's fine at face value and didn't visit her or anything. It's like that time when he tried explaining the time travel plagiarism to Aino; he only tried it once and then didn't put in any more effort to do any better. It also doesn't help that even though he's unaware of it, plagiarizing White Knight and then trying to defeat Aino in rankings is essentially trying to crush a poor girl's dreams of working in her dream career. And if he really was the old man who got Aino interested in Jump, then he's been loving with her life from the start. One thing the manga glosses over is how Aino started her series right when the anime for White Knight started airing. She's been under a massive disadvantage from the beginning and probably had to work even harder to get number 1 in the rankings. It also feels like there's a bit of victim blaming with Aino, I think? Her ex-editor sounded concerned about her, but he makes it sound like Aino no longer using assistants, or not answering his calls, or replacing him with a different editor was all entirely on Aino's end. In the end, he only blames himself for not trusting Aino to do her work, and not, you know, doing better at looking after her health.

Jerkface posted:Is there any on going baseball manga? Major is a completed baseball manga that's never been fully translated. But there's currently a group going through and filling in all the gaps that other scanlators missed. There's a couple hundred chapters done, and new chapters are being released daily. The manga follows a young boy who dreams of playing in the major leagues, currently it's in his first year of highschool.

As someone from South America that has never played or even watched Baseball (Ok I tried to watch one match with my dad when I was a kid and we both fell asleep) I'd recommend Ace of Diamond, it's fun! Major is good but I prefer AoD.

I'm not sure that Hanami and Dagon even have anything left to talk too once they died since even Jogo says that when they do return they will be different. Like, the curse spirits are amalgamations of human fears and energy so I don't think they have an ego of their own prior to manifesting so this is all Jogo's delusion as a foundation. But it's just as likely that Sukuna actually is being genuine here since he's already aware of what's going on in Jogo's headspace so . Maybe he's not a complete dick to people all the time.

ive been pretty forgiving of the nudity in Undead Unluck but I do not like the new chapter for it. Tatiana's power is cool, and it makes sense why she is the way she is, but man you had to make the choice to make her a little girl whose power means she can't wear clothes huh. Sigh.

lmao apparently the tankobon for ghostwriter is changing some of the dialogue? Working on a really bad translation now https://twitter.com/gehaSyaki/status/1290279374420193280?s=20 lovely translation of the first panel, specifically his thought bubble (since that's what changed) - old: I’m sorry! I’m really just a lousy plagiarist. new: I had to stupidly think it was just a dream lovely translation of the second panel - old: I couldn’t just blurt out “The truth is I copied a jump sent from the future” new: If I blurted out that I had a time machine, I’d be labeled an idiot! Soooo it seems to try and maybe be a little more sympathetic towards protag? Making him not as easily admit to just striaght-up copying, and making him feel a bit more trapped by society. My rough translation of the tweet's text itself seems to maybe more imply it might be to bring his thoughts in line with later chapters? translated tweet text: The tankobon release is improving the protagonist's circumstances with the unfolding plot My japanese is rough so hopefully someone else can correct me if I'm wrong. Is this a common thing with tankobon releases? (also the comments on that tweet joke about how it's headed towards cancelation lol) CodfishCartographer fucked around with this message at 20:33 on Aug 3, 2020 |

But we did get a key piece of information in this chapter: Sukuna knows what ROYALTY is and is firmly on the path.

Working on a really bad translation now I assume corrections in tankobon releases happen a lot. There was actually a plot point in Bakuman where a VA auditioning for the protagonists' anime used a line that was in the tankobon release, and everyone noted that the correction made more sense within the context of the scene. But LOL at how Ghostwriter's author is so desperate to retcon the MC from being an unlikable shithead.

Retired Heroes 39 So bad news, this is the last chapter(for now?). The author’s publisher shut down so they’re looking for a new one, and it’s been over a year since then. Hopefully they find one eventually.

Yeah afaik the author got notice that "hey we gonna go out of business so you get one last chapter before we out" and the author did his best tosorta set up a followup hook so he could shop the series around to other publishers. That was a year ago and apparently he's had no luck yet. Even then, considering it's a harsh axe, the chapter was still pretty good, had some interesting insight into the adventurer dealie, ponders on what eventually becomes of "protagonist" offspring, and some cool musings on disenfranchised people growing too big for their world. lovely that it's the end, but a good chapter. edit: this was legit probably the best manhua i've ever read, and still up there in the top comics overall. Sad to see it gone.

The art is iffy in Retired Heroes but its pretty good!! Meanwhile thanks to the awesome viz subscription I tore through Haikyu! in like 3 days. Working from home in quarantine has given me way more time to consume manga/anime and Viz's sub lets me go after stuff I normally wouldnt like a shonen volleyball manga. I gotta say I enjoyed it a lot, volleyball definitely has a good setting for a shonen sports anime due to the individual skill expression and the teamwork element. I also liked that it definitely didnt outstay its welcome and knew when to end: I think it would have gotten stale if we had followed them through any more high school stuff so I was pleasantly surprised when it skipped all of it! I liked ending it on their first tournament, no need to introduce new 1st years and do more interhighs etc. We get the nice lower level HS tournament stuff, then bam we see what everyone is up to while exploring some beach volleyball differences, and then ending it on a much higher level pro game into the last chapter showing Kageyama/Shoyo/Oikawa again. It was great! Felt like overall the art style was really nice, dialogue and stuff pretty typical shonen fare but not bad, some funny recurring gags. Only thing that was maybe a little mehhh was Tanaka ending up with Kiyoko. I would have liked it more for a character growth thing if he was with no one we knew or the volleyball girl. I don't like it when pushy guys end up with the girl in these mangas even though Tanaka was overall a great guy so hes like the least worst example I can think of (unlike some OTHEr recently ended jump manga *cough* kimetsu no yaiba). And I should say everything else around Kiyoko was great, especially the reveal of her competitive athletic past and her hurdle at nationals. The Watsuki stuff is slightly different legally anyway, morally still very hosed up don't get me wrong and gently caress Watsuki but, as he just got hit with possession which was still legal in Japan until a couple years prior to him getting caught possessing it. Jump should have excommunicated him but yeah Oda looks up to him as a mentor.

Oda stood up for both Shimabukuro (Toriko) and Watsuki when they got busted. The thing that's the most hosed up is it's a sexpest dude, writing a female-led series, being drawn by a female artist whom if I recall is REALLY young to be working in Jump. I think the artist legit is 19 years old.

The oneshot(Asagaya Geijutu Koukou Eizouka e Youkoso) eventually turned into a new One-Shot for Act-Age, which got picked up for a series.

Also, Time Paradox Ghost Writer even when it is eventually cancelled will probably live on in meme form.
