Was it this thread that said Vietnam has the best Covid response? Looks like Vietnam has buckled and Laos and Cambodia are still holding the center. Myanmar also has better death to population ratio than Vietnam. The whole Indochina region does very well, while the South Asia region does badly. There has to be something related to the weather/temperature/geography. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has sworn in his elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa as prime minister, finance, urban development and Buddhist affairs minister. You might recall Mahinda as the former president who strengthened ties with China and signed that port deal. Interestingly Gotabaya holds dual citizenship with the US. The eldest brother is also now the irrigation minister and a nephew is the youth and sport minister.

I have been reading up on Sri Lanka and its make a pretty good comparison to the Taiwan island. The population of the 2 islands are about the same. The land mass of Sri Lanka is twice that of Taiwan. It's only 50 km from the subcontinent, and the Taiwan's distance to mainland is about 4 times longer. Historically, India was only unified once under Asoka (not including the southern tip and Sri Lanka) before the British. So Sri Lanka was never part of any India dynasty/empire. While Buddhism has been completely killed off or obsorded back to Hinduism in the subcontinent mainland, it still is the majority religion in Sri Lanka. That makes Sri Lanka more similar to the Indochina countries. I feel if Sri Lanka was majority Hindu, India could have easily annex it after the independence. But the Indians are kind of people who don't pay attention to geopolitic military theories. So right now China is basically taking what the US has done to China with the containment strategy, with the control of the Diaoyu Island and Taiwan, and does the exact same thing to India with Sri Lanka port and the string of pearls.
