That said I do have some stuff for Over There that’s even weirder than the Cancrioth but still, more or less, physically plausible.

Tyrant ending: I think you’re looking at it backwards. The Taino weren’t a major threat to the Spanish either but the result of their interactions was one of the most appalling genocides in history. There are more kinds of threat than ‘those people might come gently caress us up’ and one of them is ‘what are we going to do to them?’

Yeah, that's what got me concerned - and interested. I think seeing how this new potential land-rush/colonization impacts the power struggle at home (and relations/the power balance between ie the colonial v home territory cryptarchs) is a big hook for me, and seeing the early stages of a potential colonial project again but with Baru in a position of power. Really happy with how the ending left them in a very pleasant (however temporary) place as well, much easier to sit with imo.

Also, somewhat spoilery question, does anyone have theories re: the identities of the last two cryptarchs we've had named?

I don’t think we’ve seen either of them yet, though I have a tinfoil hat regarding Renascence that involves either ancient technology or some sort of... will of mankind type of thing made manifest. Something balls nuts rather than a person.

I was pretty surprised by how much of the cast of Gideon made it back, frankly, considering that basically all of them were dead by the end of it :v:

I liked Harrow fine, for the record. It's a moody psychodrama about Harrow's trauma that takes place mostly in her dreams, and I don't mind that it sidelined plot in order to get that done.

The ghost in the sword is the Sleeper is Commander Wake is Gideon's mother is the spirit that was possessing Cytherea's corpse. Alecto is dead girl in the Locked Tomb is the golden-eyed ghost that's haunting Harrow is God's cavalier. Two different ghosts.

I also got confused between The Body and The Sleeper at first.

I spent the first half of the book doubting whether it would amount to anything but then there was a ton of payoff where the 2nd person chapters and the increasingly-off-kilter retelling of the first book actually make sense.
Still not entirely sure what the gently caress actually happened at the very end, but I guess we'll find out with book three.

I love how the Dramatis Personae at the beginning of the book has an obvious hook with Harrow's obfuscated cavalier pointing you somewhat at what's going on, but also has some other misleads/hints/lies in it: e.g. how the Saint of Duty's name is all-caps while the others are not

So I finally got around to reading A Wizard of Earthsea after owning it since I was a kid. The story itself didn't completely grab me but the the world and characters make me excited to see what the rest of the series is like.

And August is apprently the month where I read things I should've read years ago cause after finishing Earthsea I started on The Traitor Baru Cormorant. I'm abut halfway thorugh and I'm enjoying the heck out of it, and seeing all these Tyrant spoiler tags are making me want to binge the rest of it and move on to Monster, but I can't cause my brother really wants me to read The Lies of Locke Lamora next.

I reread Monster in preparation for Tyrant and while I loved Monster the first time through it felt a lot stronger on a second reread. And with Tyrant a day later, everything Monster had been setting up felt worth it and necessary.

There’s some debate about Monster but I think I like it better than the first book.

Two questions before I dive into Baru 3: Tokyo Drift: Is there a fourth coming, or is this it for the trilogy? I also remember a character talking about their being some significance behind the name Kettling, but I can't remember anyone saying what that significance was. Did I miss that?

I finally finished Harrow, and I wish I'd re-read Gideon first. But I enjoyed it enough I'll probably read them again when I get the chance. I'll probably try Baru and a few other want-to-reads before I do that.

Possibly very mild spoiler for book 3 (but might have been mentioned in book 2) it's a reference that it's kept in some unknown-to-Falcrest wildlife reservoir that acts as a "kettle" to contain it until it is used as a weapon.

There's a fourth coming at some point, but unclear exactly when. I wouldn't let that stop you though, even where the third ends gives enough closure that you'll feel OK waiting for the sequel I think.

Good Hunter, what... what is this post?
Tyrant Baru thought about Farrier and Hesychast:

ok, so Farrier's grand secret that keeps him controlled is that he (believes) he fathered an illegitimate child with Kindalana, foreign royalty, which goes against Falcrests creeds. But it's fairly likely that Kindalana slept with Cosgrade as well, meaning that it's likely that his grand secret is... the same thing.

So if it came to be that one of them won their reckoning and was granted the knowledge to destroy the other... they'd wind up destroying themselves, emotionally, in the process. Very poetic, isn't it?

Gentleman bastards is a fantastic series if one enjoys characters experiencing even more suffering than in the standard Robin Hobb book.
It is however a decent read that could have been much better with a tighter storyline.

Had heard good things about Binti, think I bought the first book when it was on sale but hadn't gotten around to reading it yet, the full trilogy for $2 seems like a great deal.

Might grab the Shannara Trilogy too just for nostalgia's sake since I haven't read it in decades and have no idea where my books went.

Binti’s really good. All three books together are about the same length as a ‘regular’ book, and you’ll breeze through pretty quickly as it throws cool ideas at you about three times a page.

I think the only annoyance was that because it is three books there’s some needless repetition in books two and three, but it’s a very minor complaint.

Foundryside is pretty much the ultimate example of the trend of modern fantasy stripping all the wonder and mystery out of the genre, it’s magic as literal coding (could not be more literal) set in steampunk Venice. The heroine’s super power is basically that she is incredible at debugging.

Read Perdido Street Station but, really, read The Scar.
