After finishing Legion, I had a question about Chaos. If the Cabal's whole thing is "we're thousands of species that have been fighting Chaos since before hominids existed", why do they think that the Chaos gods can only be defeated once humanity is wiped out? Is there something about humans that empowers Chaos more than other species?
My theory is that after the Necrons went into hibernation the warp attained a kind of steady state. The Orks had their own mindspace which they didn't want to leave, and nobody else could get into. The Eldar managed to construct their gods to act as buffers between the raw warp and their emotions. The other races were either so small compared to the Eldar, or psychically unreactive, that the Warp was pacified to a degree.

65 million years pass and suddenly humanity starts to exist. This is a problem because humans are more psychic than the average race, breed like rabbits, and have a completely unrestrained subconscious compared to the Eldar. While humanity was confined to Earth and the solar system it wasn't a problem because the Eldar still eclipsed the human effect on the warp. However once humans started colonizing other worlds their population jumped from a few hundred billion during the Age of Terra, to more-than-there-are-numbers-to-count-with within a few millennia. Within a generation to the Eldar.

I interpret the cataclysmic warp storms of Age of Strife as the Eldar-warp slamming into the new formed Human-warp. Like a hot and cold front colliding and causing tornadoes. Eventually the previous steady state became completely sustainable as the human souls became the dominant expressions of the warp entities like Khaine and Isha. The Eldar psyche was then striped of it's buffer and started interacting with the warp more directly. This coincides with the Fall of the Eldar, and explaining (to me at least) why it happened so suddenly after 65 million years of stability.

Eventually a new status quo is reached and the Eldar psychic gestalt coalesces into Slaanesh, while the simpler human outlook ends up reforming the remainder of the warp to better express our souls. Thus the birth of Slaanesh was also the birth of the current versions of Khorne, Nurgle, and Tzeentch.

So basically humans existing completely destabilizes the warp, changing it from something dangerous but managable, to pure chaos.

Edit: ooo page 666. Good daemonic number, must mean I'm right.

edit 2: Korks were introduced as ancestors to Orks in the first Necron codex, which retconned Eldar, Jokaero, Orks, and an unnamed unfinished primate race on some dinky planet, as being created by the Old Ones to fight the Necrontyr.

I thought it was well established that the age of strife and the long night was because of the Eldar Fall and the birth of Slaanesh. The fall of the eldar was relatively recent by 40k standards, only happening a few thousand years before the great crusade.

During the Dark age of Technology and the expansion of humanity, the original Eldar Empire was still alive and kicking.

I don't have an exact source but I thought it was the birth of Slaanesh that created the Eye of Terror, and "blew out" all the warpstorms that had made human FTL impossible.

And that the fall was immediately prior to the Great Crusade.

edit: Yeah all this warp speculation would have been between m22 and m30

Well, the part I was getting at it is that Humans weren't very psychically active before the age of strife.

There were some, but it was extremely rare. Then after the long night and the birth of Slaanesh it became significantly more common, which is why there were so many worlds under the grip of psyker warlords. The fall of the eldar and the warp storms made humans more psychically active, rather than the other way around.

So I don't think the emergence of humanity had anything to do with the fall of the Eldar. They did it to themselves. Unless this is mentioned somewhere I haven't read.

I woke up yesterday needing to buy 40k books and used the last of my birthday giftcard money on the Yarrick omnibus and the Deathwatch omnibus, they had better be good 'cause the concepts surrounding them are great. Spec ops space marines and the only man the Orks respect/fear? Yes please!

And while I wait my brain can't decide if I'm allowed to read the Forges of Mars omnibus yet, or if I have to wait. Why, brain. Please let me read.

I believe it's established that Khorne, Nurgle, and Tzeentch were all born during the European medieval ages, with each emergence heralding another catastrophe for Britain (the Norman Invasion, the Black Death, and the War of the Roses). Whether this was a coincidence or a reflection of English terribleness, is unknown. But it is apparent that these Marmite-flavored Chaos Gods had difficulty propagating, and it took the fall of the Eldar / French for Slaanesh to be born and teach her brethren how to make little khornites, nurglings, and tzeentches. If it weren't for them, the warp would probably be filled with bad food and croquet.

Hi, I haven't cared about 40k lore for at least a year. How's Guilliman doing? Are we moving into 41k anytime soon? Will chaos win?

If you don't have answers for these questions, can you at least point me to where I can find them? Or cool new books to read after I plow through my new omnibuses.

The conveniently titled portion of the Imperium which is cut off from the light of the astronomicon and thus "Dark". Not to be confused with the second edition rules expansion which had all the vehicles and wargear cards in it.

The Dark Imperium refers to the Imperium on the Northeastern side of the Galaxy beyond the giant warpstorm known as the Great Rift. Its called the Dark Imperium because the light of the Astronomicon has difficulty piercing the Rift, meaning that poo poo is officially bad in the Segmentae Ultima and Obscurus since navigation is a literal nightmare.

The lead up fiction happened in out of print game books under the banner Gathering Storm in 2017. Dark Imperium and it's sequel covered some of it presumably but they were pulled from Amazon thanks to a timely nurgle disease plot. Dawn of Fire just kicked off with Avenging Son. A lot of recent books tie in, like ADBs Spear of the Emperor has a single marine and his servants heading on a suicide mission into a dark sector to see how they are holding up. I just finished the audio book of that one, it was great.

Chris Wraight deals with Bobby Gs return from earth pov in his series Carrion Throne and Emperors Legion.

Consider Peter Fehervari's dark coil books if you haven't read them yet. They are kind of stand alone and not related to the 41k developments yet from what I've read, but his books are horror adjacent and tie together a bit in subtle ways. He suggested starting with Requiem Infernal, which is one of his newer ones but earliest in the timeline.

Carrion Throne and Hollow Mountain are POV from an Inquisitors acolyte and are set during the build up to the Great Rift and end when the great rift turns up.

Valdor is very much a prequel to the Heresy series and only tangentially related to the Emperor's Legion and Regent's Shadow which go into the effect of the rift, Poppa Smurf's return and the response of the ruling classes of Terra.

Speaking of collections, this beauty came in:

I also got my collector's editions of Harlequin and Chaos Child. These were the first special editions GW ever did before Black Library was even a thing. Unfortunately, the first in the series, Inquisitor, was only ever released in paperback, but I've been in touch with Ian Watson and he is willing to sign a copy of that and Space Marine if I send him a package with return posting. Just gotta find them in decent shape.

Love these rad '90s covers.

I also picked up a copy of Visions of Heresy. It's a great artbook and lorebook covering the whole thing.

And a copy of the new Black Library art book which is pretty good too

Finally got these sweet Horus bookends. Gonna have to find a pro to commission to be painted

The Grey Knights poo poo has always seemed dumb to me. They had IG from Armageddon, who were now battle-hardened veterans against Chaos, and had helped them defeat Angron. That's such an asset, at worst they could have purged anyone suspected of taint or future taint, and kept the rest as a Inquisition Stormtrooper detachment that isn't allowed to go back to their old lives or talk to civilians. Or they could have sent all of them on a suicide mission with some kind of strategic value. Instead they just open fire on the IG ships in front of the Space Wolves who kill their Grand Master and like 100 irreplaceable snowflake Grey Knights.

This is all true but I'm concerned it could lead to an impression that the Space Wolves are not complete poo poo?
