"Umm..." perfectly encapsulates my feelings on this chapter. So, like, were the bubbles coming out of Rai or colliding w him? Wondering if the Spin is how they can "steal" concepts or if it's something new?

Not sure on the spin stuff, but I think Josuke had put bubbles in the wall while fighting Dadada, so when Rai missed his attack it knocked the bubbles out and caused them to hit him

that's my read - josuke pulled a kira and set a bubble trap, but rai triggered it on accident instead

that kind of wouldn't work because the inherent natural strength of the horse was that it was a living creature and would inherently use the power of the golden rectangle when it galloped

rko

maybe golden-rectangle compliant motor vehicles have come a long way since the late 1800s

Also has Araki ever let a little thing like consistency get in the way of a good Stand battle

As a motorcycle it has at least dozens of horsepower, Born This Way would take the Spin to heights Johnny and Gyro could have only dreamed of

Guys, stop coming up with cool ideas involving plot elements long forgotten

So if I see this right, Gappy's bubbles have the power to erase what they touch - at least some of them. He hid some of his bubbles in the wall, which unfortunately came bursting out when Mamezuku triggered a Calamity nearby. This erasing power seems to surprise Josuke, too - but you could see it as a natural extension of his plunder ability (this time, stealing "everything").

Why did this ability trigger now? Was there always a random chance that Josuke would hit a perfect spin with a bubble, making it this devastating - but with the Calamity in effect, this chance was boosted just enough to gently caress up Mamezuku?

In any case, the Doctor's speech somehow cracks me up, it's hilarious how he nonchalantly admits he has no loving clue what's gonna happen

My guess how things are going from here...

Wonder of U is hosed up by Josuke's discovery of Spin, and he retreats. The user tries to get the Rokakaka fruit, with Jobin bleeding to death, but he's stopped (and, I guess, ultimately killed) by Kaato. Who may also erase Kyo retroactively from history through time fuckery. (I still believe removing her from that picture is intentional.)
Mom saves Jobin with the fruit, turning Jobin (and someone else???) into the final boss who will face Josuke, once he finds out what's been going on at the Higashikata estate. Perhaps Jobin might even fuse with Kaato, turning him into the ultimate mommaboy of all of Jojo.

Turn Josuke into Elvis/King Creole somewhere along the way and we're good

What the gently caress was this during Fun Fun Fun?

Who is that? Why did Josuke remember This, Then?

His face is kinda unique and isn't like Kira's or anyone else I can remember.

What makes me confident that this is significant somehow is how it shows up in the big flashforward introduction in chapter 83. At the very least, even if Araki did some rewrites midway through or whatever, it’s hard to see how he wasn’t committing to some kind of endgame with that move. And if you’re purposefully going to reference the family photo (and wasn’t a family photo one of the first things Norisuke tries to get done after Josuke moves in?), why not just do the whole thing?

Unless it’s Tsurugi just like, narratively focusing on the people he considers part of his family, mentally editing Kyo out, but that’d kind of be less fun. And after all,

it’s so possible that Araki has had the biggest brain of all the whole time and everybody underestimated his grand design.

But seriously, SBR all hangs together really nicely and felt fully realized and focused in a way you definitely didn’t see in Part 5 or 6. Maybe giving Araki months between chapters helps him avoid weird plot swerves or rewrites just to make a deadline.

That said I will still be 0% surprised if we never figure out who that blond guy is (and I will poo poo a whole-rear end brick if it’s been Gyro staring directly at us for years).

Johnny, when transferring his kid's sickness by shooting himself with Spin, triggered a sort of equivalent exchange - kid's healthy, random rock drops on his head. In that sense, Johnny triggered the very first "Calamity"

Calamity is basically rotation applied to fate. The Higashikatas are trapped in a never-ending rotation that keeps drawing the rock disease to them, and with it, Calamity. In that first act of sacrifice, Johnny inadvertently cursed his family by trapping them in an infinite spiral, ironically very similar to what he did to Valentine. There is only one way to break the curse.

An equally as powerful rotation in the opposite direction! Josuke needs to learn that fate and calamity are both a force of rotation, and he needs to master the Spin to control them. He needs a mysterious Gyro flashback, STAT. Good thing he has an opponent right now to practice unwinding calamities on!

Josuke will then break the Higashikata curse by slam-dunking a hyperspin bubble right into Tsurugi's origami face

Why does the doctor go from having the robot stand face to having the doctor’s face when he starts his ominous monologue? Is it from Rai’s perspective? This switch happens a few times, but I probably should get some work done this morning instead of doing a close read of a fight that won’t get done until right before Christmas.

I think it's to indicate that Tooru is taking direct control. Wonder of U is an automatic stand, but on its own, it seems to be pretty dumb (when walking "inside" someone's perception, it couldn't differentiate between empty air and a mirror, so it ran head-first into the mirror before eventually moving through). The reason everybody only saw the head doctor from behind is probably because it was in automatic mode then; it gets a face when Tooru is directly acting and speaking through it.

The stand doesn't HAVE to show the doctor's face, apparently; so I think that, while it maintains its robot face right now, the doctor's face indicates that the real Tooru is reacting right now.

Araki bringing in the overarching Jojo theme of fate/"gravity" would get me hype as hell, not gonna lie. It's only been on the periphery so far.
