I am (enjoying Edens Zero). When he plans things, Hiro's pretty good at keeping things engaging.

I can live with it, when it's played for laughs, but he goes way overboard sometimes. Still, I do enjoy how this crew of fuckups just happily goes around the galaxy being happy until they have to fight something. It's just a fun little adventure. chumbler posted:I'm still reading it, but none of the characters are really landing for me the way the Fairy Tail ones did. I have 0 interest or connection to any of the characters. I'm just enjoying their stupid adventures and ribbing on each other and the fact that the lead is an idiot. It's pretty self aware on a lot of the tropes its using which helps.

In the latest Fire Force chapter it is confirmed that Shinra is literally that world's version of Jesus. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Hiro Mashima's stuff crosses a threshold of "generic-ness" that makes it difficult for me to enjoy. Kinda reminds me of when I read Flame of Recca, which I think is the first shounen thing I ever read where I actually thought "this is really generic" (though when it came out it probably wasn't as much - I read it sometime between 2004 and 2008).

MäR (same mangaka as Flame of Recca)was one of the most disappointing series I've read. Started out pretty interesting and had some compelling characters, including HALLOWEEN THE CRUCIFIED and the cutest witch since Botan, but nothing really came of it. The sequel was bad the entire time.

In terms of shounen of that era Houston Engi is a series I've thought about rereading a lot. I remember it being really off the wall comparatively.

I re-read Houshin Engi not that long ago and it's still a really good read. It does have a problem that some characters come and go very fast, some great characters get cut down in short order, and of course it's very dude-centric, but I'm pretty sure most of that is due to what it's adapting. It's also got that great big-clothes-and-sharp-lines 90s art I'm a sucker for. It still looks great.

ZepiaEltnamOberon posted:Jujutsu Kaisen spoilers. Link from Viz This was honestly a masterful sendoff for Nanamin. He retired after Haibari passed away during the cult incident, came back because he never truly found a job that suited him and those words of gratitude he got along the way he came back to the dangerous life of a shaman. Losing Nanamin hurts, not just because of how he went out, but because I had already accepted he had died 10 chapters ago but he had a little more time on the clock before punching out for good. "You've got it from here" I also want Mahito to eat it. Painfully and slowly. Itadori did not need this and neither did Nanamin

Ayakashi Triangle: I think I'm gonna drop this. Who the hell okayed these gratuitous naked shots? This is just outright porn by this point. Phantom Seer: I'm not a fan of how Aibetsu is getting sidelined whenever she tries to show some agency. The fact that Katanagi lost someone who sacrificed themselves for him is such a weak excuse to keep Aibetsu from doing anything. Magu-chan: This chapter made me laugh a lot. The gag at the end where you're fooled into thinking Ren was the one who sat next to and said those profound things with Naputaaku only for it to turn out to be his sister was great.

Been unpacking this chapter of JuJutsu and one thing I really like about the story at large that took some time to be realized; is how much forethought has been put into the writing and how it's all playing out in what is happening now. And it's something reinforced by the nature of the story being about shamans which keeps elements and introspection on life and death at the forefront of the narrative. Nanamin is without a doubt my favorite character in the story and has been such since his first fight with Mahito. He's also confronted death now twice and has done so with clear eyes. That's why, in his last moments when he's trying to find the right words to say to Yuji it's very important he gets the right ones out. Yuji has been traumatized by his interactions with the shaman world since chapter 1. And in no uncertain terms Yuji is also suicidal and this is demonstrated in his constant and frequent acceptance of dying as some kind of duty or obligation whether it's because he caries Sukuna in him, or if it's because he's outmatched and he's resolved to hold the enemy as long as he can. Yuji at this point has also been faced with the loss of people he knew (his Grandfather, Junpei) and the murder of human/curse hybrids by his own hand. And now, after being confronted with the full extent of what Sukuna did, Yuji's first thought was to find anything to fight even though all he really wants to do is just end it all. But the last words of his grandfather simply won't let him. And given the nature of the series and the oddity of Yuji's friendship power it's still not certain how much actual power his grandfather's passing had over him. But even then I don't think he'd take those words lightly and he'd still be as conflicted as he is now. As a tangent, Characters in this story are prone to making very human errors. Megumi for all his efforts made a really bad call in summoning Mahoraga against Katana guy. The first time he tried to summon it against Sukuna you could argue it was the right kind of desperation move since it was against basically the final boss of the series and we know Gojo was not far behind. But here it was a petty act and directly led to the amount of death we got. Not saying I don't see what he was going for but it was a bad call given his opponent's biggest danger is backstabbing support shaman. Gojo likewise has now twice been undone by his friendship with Geto and his failure to act in stopping Geto the first time. A completely understandable moment but one that led to a lot of deaths during Geto's life, and Gojo being sealed up now so he could not help prevent Sukuna's rampage in Shibuya. As things are, Megumi is going to be doing some hard coping in the future and whenever Gojo gets out of jail he'll likely be doing the same. Even Yuji's grandfather should have chosen his parting words more carefully, it's clear he was passing his regrets onto his grandson and that's been something of a burden to Yuji this entire time. Which wraps back around to Nanamin. I'm interested to see if his decision will be the correct one in the short and long run because his death will be the 4th or so major death for Yuji across the series and the kid has already been through enough. Next chapter is going to be rough.

On a side note, I don't get how the Hand Katana dude died. Did Sukuna just kill him as a petty gently caress you (or to further traumatize Itadori with a visible show of what he'd done), or did he die because Sukuna's field effect was still going on when he ran into the crater where it had taken place?
