support for term limits is a pretty easy way to determine if someone actually understands politics or not.

It seems to be like we'd be better off lengthening individual house terms instead of term limiting them. In addition to four years being not enough time to NOT be leashed to lobbyists and officials, those motherfuckers are literally always in re-election mode.

Here's my easy 3 step solution to fixing the Congress: 1. Abolish the Senate 2. Bring back earmarks 3. Public financing of elections so reps don't spend 50%+ of their time fundraising Part of the reason AOC is so effective is because she's so flush with cash that she doesn't have to spend time licking boots for campaign dough.

Mistaken Frisbee posted:Can we abolish the state legislative senates too? They're the worst. I don't get the point of them. The framers had to create the Senate (as a compromise to the Slave states natch) and they specifically created it as a non representative body. It's like all the states just copied the feds for the sake of it, except they just made two proportional houses, one with bigger districts. Except Nebraska, who eliminated their Senate as a cost saving measure in WWII and never brought it back.

Nah, the original justification for having the senate be less proportional was because otherwise Virginia and the slave states would have a lot more power, especially if you counted the slaves as people being represented despite having no say in anything. And then later they had to make an equal amount of states north of the mason dixon to keep the balance with the new slave states, and most of the new northern filler states are comparatively empty now, but I'm not sure if they were more or less populous than the new southern states at the time. And so now it's much more difficult for white supremacists to suppress the people they don't want to vote, the only way they can maintain their power on the federal level is with the rural states where population growth lagged way behind in tandem with the autocratic states that will bend the knee to the national party for the sake of maintaining power, and it's a whole mess to try and fix.

You are correct, I thought the 3/5ths compromise came before the CT compromise, but it's the other way around

It's dumb but the way the 3/5 compromise is discussed nowadays annoys me a bit. It's framed as "slave states didn't think black people counted as full humans" (which, yeah, true) but at the time counting a slave as a full person actually gives vastly more power to the slavers. Counting a slave as 0 persons was the anti-slavery position. The pop culture version of it doesn't really get across how monstrously hosed up the situation was.
