I’ve been pronouncing them differently, so presumably this means the food people have a far more plain sounding name than I originally thought, or when I need to buy tires I need to briefly put on a French accent.

What other pronunciation is there?

So, what's he toasting with there? Jagged bits of rock and metal that will cause flat tires and require people to buy new pneus?

yeah the french is that he is literally drinking (ie. absorbing) the obstacles in your way. It just sounds better in french.

I was gonna say I'd always heard them pronounced the same (first syllable "mish") even before I knew they were from the same company, but apparently they use the harder "ch" sound in their own media when talking about the tires

It’s probably based on where you live. In the UK I always heard that hard ch sound, but maybe in the US it’s less prevalent. I can’t recall hearing anyone say it out loud since I lived here, knowing how fate works I’ll probably hear someone say it today.

Subaru is the same way. In the US and most other places it's pronounced the (correct) Japanese way, closest to "super-roo". In Australasia for the longest time it was pronounced "su-BAH-roo". They seem to be aligning in recent ads. You can hear the differences in these videos:

I got the hard ch sound from watching sports car races with British announcers who always clearly say "MiTCHelin tires!"

So like always its the British not knowing how words work.
