Normal development timelines range from 10-20 years. This is truly an amazing, coordinated accomplishment. There's a ton of moving parts in vaccine development and obviously we have to ensure safety and effectiveness, but this is pretty awesome that the average citizen in the US will likely have access sometime in late 2021, early 2022. I worry about worldwide supply, however.

OwlFancier posted:I guess I am more asking why does the white house have this manky rear end shag carpet that you need a zen gardener to straighten out all the time? The worst part is that photo evidence says that wasn't there as recently as 4 days before the tiny desk rant. Normally that room has a more normal round rug that Melania designed for it. It was dragged out specifically for this. http://www.whitehousemuseum.org/ is a neat website if you want to see the entire White House over its history. It lets you go room-by-room from maps to see how each administration changed (or didn't change) it. As of 1961 the White House is legally a museum, which means no administration has the ability to sell or give away ownership of any of its property (to prevent any president from trying to steal or auction anything off), so they have a 40,000 square foot warehouse hidden in Maryland for all their poo poo. Each incoming First Family goes through the entire collection and what's already in the mansion to decide what they want to have, or if they want to move around which rooms are which. Donald and Melania are sleeping in separate rooms so they each presumably decorated to their taste, though no pics have come up. Did you know that the press briefing room where Trump keeps getting heckled by reporters was built over the top of the pool FDR installed to help with his physical therapy? It's still there! Just empty and presumably in disrepair!

Surely the real power move would be to have the pool refurbished and continue to conduct press briefings from it

I understand the need to rush this and I'm sure the various researchers involved did their best, but a vaccine doesn't seem like something you can slam together this fast without consequences.

None of the clinical steps are being skipped. Normally when you make a vaccine you're spending months to years getting funding, and ethics waivers for the testing etc. That poo poo can take years. This time literally everything that normally gets held up in meetings or government agencies signing off on things that can take 6-8 months have been passed immediately.

The issue with vaccine side effects is that you would be giving it to everyone, and they can have genuinely horrific effects sometimes, which is why rigorous testing is important.
