that's like 1% of Iraq's yearly oil production edit: After reading the article It looks like they pay $2 billion a year for 5 years, with the first year as a down payment rather than pay-as-you-go, but the other years paid monthly. For 1% of Iraq's oil output. Kinda like a futures contract I guess. Antonymous has issued a correction as of 01:42 on Dec 10, 2020 |

This is splashing all over the right wing discourse today, supposedly the FBI knew about a Chinese spy infiltrating American politics https://www.axios.com/china-spy-california-politicians-9d2dfb99-f839-4e00-8bd8-59dec0daf589.html Wonder if this will become a point of contention for China/USA diplomacy?

One of my roommates will have that going on in the early AM and basically it makes me want to puncture my eardrums. But you can find out things from the horror of walking by a TV blasting FN for like 30 seconds and one of them is that they are going to push this narrative/talking-point. Just saying.

The quickest solution is to just make sure the old dudes have plenty of hookers available who are on the FBI's payroll. Muscle out the foreign spies by filling the vulnerability with a prophylactic prostitute.

Ming or Qing I forget actually started an 'anti-corruption allowance' for pretty much everyone employed in the government. The idea in the beginning is if you're not corrupt, you get some big bonus $. But then it became normal to just get the bonus $ and also be corrupt almost immediately so kinda yeah what others are saying. people will just get the FBI blowjobs and then still get blowjobs from spies in your words

in seriousness tho the chilling effect is very real b/c america is being primed for anti-chinese racism basically play by play exactly like anti-japanese hysteria 80 years ago

But then it became normal to just get the bonus $ and also be corrupt almost immediately That allowance was a cash bonus wasn't it? Fungible goods aren't the same as services. If you're looking at this as a preventative action where you set one sort of behavior in direct competition with another, the idea is for the target to run directly into time and social obligation limits. If these vulnerable old men are kept occupied with an FBI prostitute paid to be their girlfriend while a spy is attempting to worm in, then they'll be a lot less vulnerable to enemy seduction, and will have a lot less time for a spy. It's gross and repugnant from a human interpersonal relationship perspective, but it fills a niche in behaviors that have proven to be exploitable. The ideal solution would be to be ruthless about ejecting foreign spies, ruthless about ruining the political careers of politicians found to be associating with spies (so that they'll be much more cautious about dealing with pretty foreign nationals), and to encourage people to vote only for political candidates of proven character. Those all take a huge amount of work, and depend greatly on having an engaged public and a fully independent agency. Just paying for prostitutes is faster and probably cheaper.

In a moment of international peril, when humanity might well have entered a dark age beyond all conceivable horrors, the industrial might of the United States, together with the blood of ordinary Russian soldiers, literally saved the world. American ideals, as celebrated by Madison and Monroe, Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Kennedy, at one time inspired and gave hope to millions.

The United States, virtually a demilitarized nation on the eve of the Second World War, never stood down in the wake of victory. To this day, American troops are deployed in 150 countries. Since the 1970s, China has not once gone to war; the U.S. has not spent a day at peace. President Jimmy Carter recently noted that in its 242-year history, America has enjoyed only 16 years of peace, making it, as he wrote, “the most warlike nation in the history of the world.” Since 2001, the U.S. has spent over $6 trillion on military operations and war, money that might have been invested in the infrastructure of home. China, meanwhile, built its nation, pouring more cement every three years than America did in the entire 20th century. is this supposed to make us mourn America?

He talks about how the Chinese who won nobel prizes live abroad but Yang, one of the most important minds in physics up there with Einstein, went back to China in 2004 (granted he's like over 100 years old now) and notoriously married some 20 year old who looks exactly like his late wife. Some of the best theorists and experimentalists were Chinese immigrants to the USA but well, USA has had particle accelerators since the 30s if you want to read about a real badass there's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chien-Shiung_Wu who did the experiment that proved our universe doesn't have mirror symmetry and had an all around incredible life.
