Smile. Win. Yay!

I'm going to have to rewatch it, because I personally found it weaker than both the Kenoh and Katsu matches. Outside of the Twist and Shout off the apron which made me yelp there was nothing there I found transcendant like Go's previous two title defences.

Still incredible don't get me wrong,. Go's a phenomenon and Sugiura really pulled it out after a kinda flat N-1.

I am not the best person to answer this because my pre 2019 DG knowledge is spotty. And I'm phone posting while watching the Packers so can't easily refer to what is actually on that service. I know this year's Kobe World isn't up yet but when it is you'll want to catch it.

Honestly I'd start with the show from the 13th as it is setting up 2021 with the top 2 matches (Shun Skywalker's newly formed group of guys against the DG gen guys they broke off from and RED vs Toryumon gen 10 man elimination tag with the losing faction splitting up.) And then the final Korakuen of the year is on the 15th. Another thing I'd recommend is the Toryumon reunion show from 31st January, it's a really fun show.

I kinda don't remember a whole lot of other shows so will recommend some matches. Really recommend the annual Kzy February Dream Gate match against Naruki Doi from 7/2, and Doi vs Susumu from 1st March. I love Susumu Yokosuka.
Twin Gate match from Gate of Origin last month is amazing. Ishida vs Okuda for the Brave Gate
Oh yeah, watch Dangerous Gate. Need that ridiculous cage match.

Also, every PAC Dream Gate match is loving rad, watch them. And another 2019 rec is just any and all of Susumu's Brave Gate run, I fondly remember the U-T match in particular but he's great.

I hope someone else will give you better recs though. (If you haven't seen it in a while watch some Kobe World main events are always good, like 2016 with Takagi vs YAMATO and 2013s Twin Gate tag match or 2011 with Mochizuki vs Hulk or 2007 with Liger vs CIMA)

formatting is a bit awkward so i'll transcribe.

MVP: Tetsuya Naito (NJPW)
Best Bout: Naito vs. Okada Wrestle Kingdom 14 1.5
Best Tag Team: Go Shiozaki and Kazsushi Sakuraba (NOAH)
Outstanding Performance: Go Shiozaki (NOAH)
Fighting Spirit: Hiromu Takahashi (NJPW)
Skill: Tetsuya Endo (DDT)
Joshi Award: Giulia (Stardom)

feel they did a good job overall given the nature of the awards but dragon gate def deserved some recognition given the year they've had. would've given lee and minoura the tag award

They made it very clear last year it's all but impossible for a New Japan wrestler to not win mvp when they boiled Okadas win down to gates and headlining big shows. At this point in time NJPW are miles out in that regard.

They also went with my favourite match..

Infinities from 2017 onwards probably have some hidden gems and Korakuen classics, but I can't remember those from the top of my head. I'm just going to throw out some shows that I personally enjoyed from the past few years:

Dangerous Gate 2017
A loaded Maximum/OG trios match, CK-1 defends vs Big R and Kotoka, Jimmyz face Verserk in a unit disbands match and YAMATO faces Mochizuki for the Dream Gate.

Gate of Destiny 2018
PAC's first singles match after returning against Flamita, 9-man madness with Mochi Dojo, Maximum and Vibes, Bandido faces Dragon Kid and Ben-K challenges Yoshino.

Dead or Alive 2019
Aside from the traditional cage match, the card also features PAC vs Dragon Kid and U-T vs Susumu in great title matches. Undercard has a Yoshino/Ishida vs Ben/Eita tag match that I remember enjoying a lot.

Kobe World 2019
One of my favourite shows top to bottom from last year. Ultimo Dragon returns, Ben-K challenges PAC, awesome three way Twin Gate match and a killer spring between Skywalker and Kzy.

It's their last big match of the year. Did a bunch of content in the lead up to it and probably will have more with the fallout/whichever unit disbands. Here's a link to a twitter thread of it: https://twitter.com/openvoicegate/status/1340391511104630784?s=20

Usually I'm able to watch Final Gate live, but due to my holiday work schedule I won't be able to watch until tomorrow evening.

Great news. It's that time of year where you can watch one of the weirdest annual traditions in wrestling. Michinoku Pro goes to Korakuen Hall for the Great Space War! Very little MichiPro makes tape but this show is always wild.

I believe this was the match where Great Sasuke first did his "puts on barrel, dives recklessly, somehow doesn't die" spot. It doesn't matter if you know nobody involved, these matches are always must watch car crashes.

(There's also a Gatoh Move offer match on the undercard but I don't think that's been uploaded anywhere yet)

Well, that was absolutely loving bonkers nonsense and left me with a smile on my face. Even as it becomes more more obvious that Sasuke has absolutely no sense of self preservation.

It's a shame it ended like that because it was a very good match until then.

I still think the match was good with the awkward finish. But Yagi blew it

Yeah if Yagi had just counted the three on the first moonsault I'd have been talking it up as a MOTYC even with the ending. It was a really phenomenal match.

Anyways besides that, it's been several hours and I'm still buzzing over the unit disbands match. DK's performance at the end there was just :discourse:.

I let my sub expire after Mochi lost the title having completely lost my passion for DG but reportedly A: they're good again B: they had fuckin gackt out there which also means they've got the wild factor present in all truly good wrestling

Anyway the point of this is that Final Gate bangs. Feels good to be back.

Go vs Kaito Kiyomiya, 4/1
Go vs Kazuyuki Fujita, 28/3
Go vs Kenoh, 10/8
Go vs Katsuhiko Nakajima, 22/11, featuring English commentary
Go vs Takashi Sugiura, 6/12

Those are the ones I'd pick, but to narrow it done further I'd say the Kenoh, Nakajima & Sugiura matches are all top 5 of the year for me.

Finally getting around to these, starting with the Kiyomiya match. That ruled. I think I already really, really like Shiozaki. The way he sells, his facial expressions, his offense, it's all just really, really great. The spot where he knew his arm was hosed but he was just like gently caress it and did the machine gun chops anyway, which might be the loudest chops I've ever seen, just put a giant loving grin on my face. Was this the best match on January 4th 2020?! I'm not saying it, but people are.

I assume the Tiger Suplex is Kiyomiya's finisher?

Yeah, he's progressed a lot into finding his own heavily matwork style this year, but when he first started his big main event push he was very much a Misawa tribute act and the Tiger Suplex is a holdover from that

It's definitely worthy of being in the conversation with Hiromu vs Ospreay and Okada vs Ibushi

You can see Yagi go check how Ben-K is doing right after the lariat that knocked him out. However, he can't do anything as Shun went immediately for the flip kneedrops.

I spotted Yagi telling Shun that something was off, but they still went for the finishing stretch. Weird call from both guys.

It is tough to place blame without knowing the expectations put on the ref. This does however show that refs should be explicitly given the direction to stop a match if someone is knocked out or seriously hurt.

Especially after Ben-K didn't respond to the three count, the match should be stopped regardless of if the three count was messed up. Everyone saw that Ben-K didn't kick out even if the ref held up at the last split second. The ref pausing for a second and then calling for the bell is no more awkward than the ref stopping his count when the wrestler being pinned clearly did not kick out.

Finally catching up on the All Japan show from the 13th. Through the first 3 matches my main takeaways have been
1. Jake Lee vs Atsushi Aoyagi is a fun short Young Boy match vs a top guy. Aoyagi comes out hot and impressed.
2. Opener of Tajiri vs Akira is a Tajiri match in 2020. And boy, Akira Francesco has put on some muscle in his year in Japan. He was so small and now he certainly isn't.
3. Purple Haze vs Fuchi, Iwamoto and the ex-W1guy Honda was very much just there.
4. Yuma Aoyagi and Kento Miyahara are challenging Violent Giants on 2/1, there's also a match with Astronauts so that loving rules. 3/1 has Yuma vs Suwama for the Triple Crown and Purple Haze vs Koji Doi and Hokuto Omori from Enfants for the All Asia tag belts.
5. Oh god, the first ever 6 man tag titles in All Japan are being competed for by a team from indie Lands End and a team featuring the mascot of a car dealership. Why?
6. Really do not like the look of these belts. Super low rent.
7. Debuting Kohei Sato just murdering Omori with elbows, very fun squash. Sato is a good addition for All Japan assuming they don't just Ashino him.
8. Putting Yusuke Okada with Yoshitatsu and Chikara is definitely them making GBS threads on him on the way out. Dude deserves so much better than AJPW gave him in 2020, great addition to either NOAH or DDT.
9. Still, fun to see Unchain in All Japan, especially as they kept pulling sharp objects out and threatening to use them like this was a death match. Baba would be rolling in his grave but I like it.
10. Oh god, Yusuke got the bamboo skewers in his head. And Jun is going to challenge Yoshitatsu for the Gaora TV title
11. Main event was fun with NEXTREAM and CIMA vs Violent Giants and Hikaru Sato. Good build to New Year Wars.

The harsh realities of capitalism suck. But hey, if it lets me keep watching Kento and Lee and Zeus and Nomura and now Sato then it's worth the minor indignity.
