That’s cool as gently caress, at this point I listen to way more Scorn than Napalm Death and would be happy as hell to have something I did remixed by him. He’s had a hell of a career.

I legit thought 1349 was a racist band at first glance because it reminded me too much of 1488 and I didn't want to take a chance. Then I googled it and learned it was the year the bubonic plague got to norway. Either way, metal is weird.

The one review is pretty funny

quote:

This is terrible but not really in the way I was hoping for. It's bad, it's boring and even without the hilarious NS stuff it'd be shite. But it's more of a "stuck on hold for 30 minutes talking to an insurance agency" bad, and not so much ultimate god of cringe which the band's facebook hinted strongly at. He is not the NS metalcore equivalent of Chris Chan; the music is just plain vanilla terrible.

Just an awkward mix of subpar, Parkway Drive-ish metalcore, bad inflames cast offs in the leads and symphonic elements, ie, a piano (I guess it being a pure European instrument and all?) that delicately plinks away at any and all opportunity, ruining what little dynamics and layering this thing had in the first place. It's the sort of album that absolutely no one would ever care about - we've all heard a few million vaguely similar bands in passing- were it not for the lyrical content. In that sense it's very reminiscent of contemporary Christian music, whereby something that is wholly below the mean somehow gets known solely due to what the singer writes about. "Known" in this sense is more "becomes an obscure injoke for certain metalheads", but still.

Writing anymore seems a bit pointless- this is not going to be anyone's guilty pleasure like Burzum or Graveland or Nokturnal Mortum or whatever, as it's poo poo... buuuut it's not poo poo enough to be good for a laugh. The musical equivalent of wet and mouldy white bread; not at all palatable but not very interesting either.

Incidentally "Workers of the World unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains" is almost 14 words so let's just go with that instead from here on.

For comparison points I greatly enjoy Agalloch or Gojira which I know are probably far from what we're talking about but closest I can get with black metal and tech/melodic death without going into something like Deafheaven that might be too far away.

If "the sublime" is part of what you love about Romanticism, a lot of doom is all about that big nature, small human feeling. I think Pallbearer does it best with the first song on their first album.

The local TV station of Enslaved's hometown apparently did a documentary on their town's most well-known (only?) metal band. There are English subtitles, but the viewing is a bit messy because that TV station posts a lot of videos, most of which get 20 views, and I couldn't find a playlist or anything, but here's the first three episodes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIGlN57sXqI

This one features Grutle Kjellson going :shobon: at his parents right at the start:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffrWU3UVeVg

I'd post all 12 (!) episodes, but I have to go watch them now and also I don't yet have the links for any of the others

People have given you some great recs already (particularly Dawn and Sacramentum) but I'd also like to throw out Sentenced's North From Here, as a great album that fits the criteria and also gets real creative with its riffing.

Deathgaze is already a subgenre of post-punk (deathrock + shoegaze). Whatever that band is, it isn't that. They just kind of sound like a blackgaze band with some death vocals, which doesn't really make a new genre.

[edit]lol it gets even better. That band registered r/deathgaze on Reddit just so they could post about themselves and there's only like 5 posts in it. They claim to have created a metal genre that already exists as a different rock genre.

this vocalist (too lazy to look into it, but i suspect the band is just the vocalist and programmed music) has a vocal reaction channel on youtube that i find pretty interesting, and he seems like a nice dude.

im not super into this music and it's a bit weird that it's just him on camera in the woods some backyard the whole time (pretty much all metal videos suck) but i give him credit for "contributing" to the "scene"

This is fun, Italian black/death about Pangaea with almost no guitar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFbcnSGnfzo

quote:

After releasing a demo ("Thecodontia", 2018) and an EP ("Jurassic", 2019), Italy's bass-driven black/death metal prehistoric beast THECODONTION is back with its first full length album, "Supercontinent". Thus far, the band's material has been uncompromisingly fast-paced and length-wise short, featuring their signature distorted double bass attacks and blistering bass solos. With "Supercontinent" THECODONTION move towards a more atmospheric and intricate direction, with tribalistic drumming, slower and lengthier riffing, and wailing reverb-drenched leads, all played on bass except for a baritone guitar guest solo on "Laurasia-Gondwana". Their blast-beating fury is nevertheless always present, this time around with a lot more variety in the riffing department. There are also four mostly non-metal instrumental segments in the forms of intro, interludes and outro, in which THECODONTION further expand their sonic palette, with bass ambience explorations and atmospheric rock leanings.

I saw California Deathfest just got pushed back again to 2022 as well, not that it's a surprise at this point.

I'm still bummed about Rotting Christ/Borknagar tour getting cancelled. That tour's not gonna even be possible till 2022 at the earliest. I was so hyped for that poo poo.

That and seeing Demilich a 2nd time, seeing Spectral Voice, seeing Om at an arboretum, Candlemass, Rippikoulu & Chthe'ilist, Amorphis & Entombed. And that's not even half of the cancelled concerts I had tickets for.

I'm so desperate for live music I actually thought about seeing David Ellefson's cover band in the middle of November.
