Wait did the UK have hereditary government officials with power until 1999 lol?

I went to a run down grocery store that mostly sold products from Latin America. At checkout, there were a pile of what looked like individually wrapped chocolates, almost precisely the same size an shape of Dove individual chocolates. No text on the wrapping though, and they weren't in any box, which I thought was a little curious, but what else could it be?

The consistency seemed a little off, but fully convinced it was chocolate, I unwrapped it, took a bite and immediately spit out. Inspecting the rest, it looked like coffee grounds, dark brown and crumbly. The taste was salty but no hint of anything else. I should have smelled it but I've already thrown it away. What the gently caress was this?

My first thought was cocoa tablets (or “tablea”), to be dissolved in hot water or milk.

It’s basically the same mistake made when a kid bites into baking chocolate. They’re not quite baking chocolate, but something like that.

The video is very optimistic and highlights people who received a peerage for actual accomplishments outside of politics.
In reality, most people get into the house of lords by being good party members for long enough. This includes just being rich and donating

The power is relatively weak; all they can do is stop a law from passing for a year. If the House of Commons passes the same bill again a year after it fails in the House of Lords, it still becomes law.

Yeah it so you can keep that part screwed into your camera, and then snap it onto the tripod, instead of having to unscrew/screw it every time you want to take the camera off/on.

Sometimes my headphones work great for my computer's audio, and sometimes they're suuuper quiet. Like, I have the volume turned up to 100 and I still can't hear the music in my ears if someone in the room is talking at a regular volume. The problem seems to happen with both my Apple ear buds (wired) and my nice DT770 headphones. When I try to google "adjust volume in Windows" or anything similar all I get is a bunch of Computers For Dummies type articles that assume I'm a boomer who doesn't know where my volume buttons are.

Has anyone else had issues with their computer's volume being totally wimpy? There must be 4-5 different places to affect volume on my computer and I'm convinced I've looked at them all. So far I've looked at:

- Volume sliders on individual windows/programs like YouTube, Spotify, etc
- The normal volume adjustment in the task bar
- The individual program volume mixer
- Spatial Sound (it's off)
- Headphones Properties (tried messing with all the poo poo in there, no differences)

A couple weeks ago it seemed to be totally "fixed" where keeping my headphone volume at 30 was about as loud as I could possibly handle and I have no idea what's changed since then. It's very frustrating because I do a lot of audio poo poo on my computer!!

Are you plugging your headphones into the same port, or are you switching between them? Do you always use the same wire? Do you occasionally connect via bluetooth?

When you notice there's an issue, is it consistent across both sets of headphones?

I don't think my desktop is capable of Bluetooth? Never tried it at least, so I don't think it's part of the issue

Tenik posted:

It's a 3.5mm jack on the front of the tower. I switch between the earbuds for normal listening and the nice headphones for audio editing and writing music, and I do use the same jack for both. And yeah, no bluetooth.

The issue is consistent across both headphones, yes. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that I'm supposed to do it differently. If that's the case, I'd like to know how I should be doing it, and of course how to remedy it.

Slimy Hog posted:

I have a 3.5mm extender cord installed into the front of the PC since the headphone jack was way too loose and I kept pulling it out. I have the female end of that connector affixed to the bottom of my desk so I can easily plug headphones into it, and when I accidentally pull my head away too fast the cord just slips through the fastener but the headphones stay attached. TBH I had this problem even before installing the extender, but I still wouldn't be surprised to learn this is a hardware issue of some sort.

Also I just took both the extender and the headphones out, dusted them off, and put them back; still no improvement to sound. Even pushing that cable in firmly and twisting it to ensure that everything's in contact seems to have no effect.

EDIT: Just tried moving the extender to the 3.5mm jack on the BACK of the tower. I thought for sure that'd fix it but it actually seems a little quieter?! That's annoying! Though I guess it does at least rule out the jack as being the problem.

Are you sure? Weird that it happened with 2 out of 3 sets of headphones.

If it comes back this sounds a lot like some program is lowering the volume for you. Lots of VOIP programs automatically lower volume on other apps when it wants to use it for itself. Discord can do this, for example.

I have a question too. If I want to boil a certain amount of water on a stove is it more energy efficient to use a large pot on a large burner or a small pot on a small burner (I think they're called burner even on an electric stove. The round things on top which get hot)?

I think the small pot. The big one has more surface area to lose heat across, plus it and the coil have more thermal mass to heat.

The thing working in the large pot’s favour is that the big coil can use more power, so it does the job quicker, and there’s less time for heat to leak away, but I think the little pot still wins. It would certainly win on a longer timescale, like if you were to simmer something for twenty minutes.

It’s not going to be a major difference and electricity is cheap, so do whatever is more convenient. Covering the pot would make a bigger difference than burner selection.

Small pot is probably more energy efficient. The larger pot has a larger surface area to which energy can radiate outwards towards things that aren't the water.

If you genuinely believe it's a domestic abuse situation and someone is in danger you can call the cops. Yes, ACAB. But ostensibly they will probably not kill anyone if this is the first time visit.

Some people might say that bringing the cops into this is increasing the danger. That's possible. They might also say that it could be traced back to you and hassle you about it. Also possible.

I know that I've been the caller in a situation like this, and I called because what I saw was wrong. It would have bothered me more to not have called.

Thanks, makes sense! I forgot heat leaves the water too haha.

I meant just for the heating, so from room temp to boiling pretty much. Figured the larger surface area might also heat it up faster and was curious if way faster meant less energy usage.

I'm tired of seeing the Activate Windows thing on the bottom right of my monitor. I used to have Windows 7 and upgraded to 10 for free. Then I went and put a brand new motherboard in the PC and I've been having this activation thing since then. I called Microsoft Support and they were useless, basically told me I'm poo poo out of luck if I can't provide a receipt of purchase. I told them I'd had this PC since I was in my late teens and there was zero chance of me finding it (can't even remember where I got the original windows a decade ago).

Does anyone know anything I can do to somehow reactivate? Opening Activation in Settings, I can see my Product ID, and the last 5 digits of my Product Key, if that'll help. I'm so close to just saying gently caress it and unlocking stuff the old fashioned way but I don't really wanna dive head first into a cesspool of viruses.
