Yeah it seems like he's hellbent on not learning any lessons at all, from anything, ever. He mentions normalizing deviance and then turns around and does it again. Also the reason for the leak is hilarious/awful: when the retaining clip for a seal on his prop speed reducer was giving him trouble, he decided to skip installing it because he thought there was no way anything was coming loose. With some of the recent posts about his antics I've begun to understand the Patey hate, but man, the contrast between him and Peter Muller is huge. Somehow Muller has managed to turn far less talent and fanbase into a much bigger ego trip.

Somehow Muller has managed to turn far less talent and fanbase into a much bigger ego trip. One is building an airplane for himself, ad bucks, and business promotion, and the other is trying to convince people who have already put deposits down that they won't die if they buy a kit from him. I'll take the over enthusiastic self promoter over the back to the wall snake oil salesman, but I'm not watching either one's videos regularly either! Kermit Week's YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c?KermitWeeks444?videos) has great footage of him flying a lot of golden age aircraft, and he usually talks about the airplane without too much self promotion or politics. I've found those to be really nice low energy things to watch with my small child when he wants to look at airplanes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiDyfQOnqaI Oh, its based on a Mosquito. That engine failure in hover still looked very dangerous, though. He rotated 90 degrees with full right pedal. There should be no yaw at all, especially when it's 'planned'.

He only found out when he arrived at the range in Germany with an empty dispenser!

I've just discovered Dave Hadfield's channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_o38eGPcI7Oe8oaAeJO0UA/ - which has very similar content, albeit on a smaller scale. Dave is chief pilot at Vintage Wings Canada so there are a number of nicely-commentated flights in various warbirds, plus some of his personal vintage/classic aircraft. He's also a former Air Canada 777 captain, published singer/songwriter and brother of ISS commander Chris Hadfield.

Stupid question from non-aeronautically informed person. I've seen some episodes of Air Disasters where it's mentioned that some systems are powered by the engines, and that if they lose them, they lose power to those systems. So why don't they have a battery back-up? Even if it's just for the displays and such.

Mr. Funny Pants posted:Stupid question from non-aeronautically informed person. Usually, things like the cockpit displays and instruments are designed so they can run off of a battery if all else fails, but as other posters mentioned, stuff like flight controls usually requires some kind of hydraulic power to run. Many larger airplanes will also have a Ram Air Turbine (basically a little windmill that pops out of the fuselage somewhere) that can provide some level of electrical and hydraulic power if everything else quits.

Mr. Funny Pants posted:Stupid question from non-aeronautically informed person. In addition to the Ram Air Turbine azflyboy mentions, many planes also have an Auxillary Power Unit, basically a generator that runs on jet fuel which can power electrics and hydraulics. In the F-16 this is called the Emergency Power Unit and runs on highly toxic hydrazine.
