A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martin - $2.99 - US Kindle
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C7BCB88

I got this on recommendation that the Baru Cormorant books reminded them of this, but it's so slow going at 80 pages in. I'm going to keep with it and I assume it picks up. Def waiting for Baru book four, after having read all three in the last couple months and pretty sure Baru is suddenly going to have an opinion on the capital gains tax in this next one.

I had a brief moment where I was late in the first Baru book or the second one and was reading a passage with Cairdine and not a single pronoun was used for the entire passage. I was suddenly doubting that I had actually read that he was a man instead of just assuming he was, so I had to flip back until I found a passage where a pronoun was used for him. It's definitely sprung to my mind several times in this book that I just assume any authority or leading person is a man and oh it turns out that like half or more of those dukes and admirals are all women. Definitely shakes things up a bit. Also, I am very aware of "they" as a gender-neutral singular or as a preferred pronoun, and can use it easily in speech, but it still took my brain a bit to adjust to the passages with Tau and it being used exclusively as a singular pronoun in writing. Quite an exercise catching my reading of a narrative up with the reality of gender.

p.s. more 18th century naval battles please

Yeah I have A Memory Called Empire on my kindle but it’s got a slow start, I’ve been struggling through the early chapters.

Also not sure if I’ll be able to read all of The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart. It’s certainly a book for someone, but not sure if that someone is me.

It’s definitely a very slow burn getting the story off the ground, it does speed up later on but it’s definitely slower-paced in general.

There's definitely a point where the story starts to pick up. Its been a while but I believe after the main characters leave the city is when stuff really starts to happen.

For what it's worth, the ending felt very satisfying. But then, I liked the book as a whole.

I am tearing my way through the White Rose. I forget how easy those books are are chew through with short chapters.

The cowardley skywhale hot LZ scene was great, gently caress it it, it's literally Vietnam and I love it. Are the books of the south worth reading? More of the same?

I have also knuckled down and started getting through Baru 2 they have finally left the castle thing in the ship and the subsequent section on the island was very good so I am back in the Baru Mood Baby Yeah!

We are like two weeks away from the sequel’s release date, so this is a great time to pick this up if you haven’t yet.

Literally they leave the apartment.

I was kinda down on it because of the slow but it stuck with me after I read it and I am looking forward to the sequel if that makes sense.

Some books I like more after I read them then when I am actually reading them I guess?

just read Too Like The Lightning.

it's a terrible boring slog. Over-contrived worldbuilding. Good ideas few and far between. Every single character is unsympathetic. Gimmicky writing style. Finished the first book hoping it would get better, it got worse at the end. Did not read the sequels.

I loved the books of the south and thought the series ended pretty well, but they are kinda different from the first few and, at least in this thread, a bit divisive.

The first book in the trilogy is often on sale.
I found the universe, in which they are set, quite interesting. I guess it's sort of YA-ish, but if it is YA, it's the first YA book (Revenger #1) which I have actually finished and enjoyed.

That's the neo-victorian series where the two sisters become space pirates? I read the first one and don't remember if I ever read the second.

Any opinions on the third one?

I’ve tried twice to read it and can’t get past 100 pages or so. The age of rationalism fetish everyone seems to have, the focus on stupid costumes, and the inexplicably well connected slave really get in the way of the short story about whatever’s going on with the kid. I’m impressed you managed to get through it!

I just finished Winter’s Orbit. The ending seemed a bit rushed and unlikely, but I still liked it a lot. I’d read something else by her.

Not gonna lie, it's been.... interesting being both extremely left politically and someone who enjoys reading military porn, especially sci-fi military porn. The trappings of a functioning military with all the hardware and training is cool, but the function of it in real life is not, and it's an ongoing struggle to find media that has the fun of that that isn't slanted too far to the right. David Drake is about the closest I've gotten - him and Glen Cook.

Marko Kloos is pretty good with the Frontlines series, and he does a really good job of the "super moto young boot" to "old head dealing with his trauma and depression with alcoholism and realizing war is pointless and we're all the same anyway" progression.

It's fantasy not sci-fi but Graydon Saunders' The March North and 1.5 of the sequels are solidly military and absolutely not right wing.

Found a review on goodreads and

quote:

This is a strange book, and not just because it is cliche-looking military fantasy that veers without warning into the murky waters of "What kind of society are we fighting for?" and "What does an emergency backup plan for a civilization look like?" And then wanders back to the grueling magical warfare.

The writing style is that very particular brand of prose beloved of software geeks who learned people as a second language. It is careful, structural, recursive, and you sometimes need to read a line three times to see where it came from. I write this way. I *try* to go back and stick in periods and knock everything down to no more than three layers deep. I am being less careful in this review, because I've just read all of _The March North_ in a sitting (long train ride) and it's sunk in some.

I don't usually quote in these reviews but I think I need to give the flavor:

"Passing for a Creek just to look at is tough, and if you look like a Creek, being anywhere near here without being able to explain where the previous six generations of your ancestors lived and what they did is impossible."

Got that? Good. And you *will* need to read those lines three times, because the author tells you everything exactly once. *Maybe* twice, for foreshadowing and resolution, but then one of them will be indirect. Blink and you'll miss major plot elements.

Oooooh! Ooh yes, okay, thank you, this thing is going on the to-read list!
