I guess that could be the WON definition but for me it's more like a guy who's very good but doesn't stand out much. I think when we did the midyear goon voting my pick was Stu Grayson.

lmao. The English language wrestling newsletter audience having a different set of biases to you was incredibly loving obvious going into these awards, even our board which has you stumping for the stuff you stump for is still way to focused on the wwf. Look at the hundred people who write in TNA for worst promotion because they fill out their ballot exactly the same every year. They are an English speaking audience with a hilariously shallow view of wrestling outside of the top layer of promotions worldwide and incredibly unable to change their mind. I would also be mad that the readers of the wrestling observer don't watch good wrestling but instead it is just very funny.

The biggest promotions winning awards shouldn't surprise anyone. Also WWE for best promotion only got 776 votes to NJPW's 3000+ and AEW's 5700+. And Stardom wasn't that far behind. For the supposed #1 company in the entire world that's a disastrous result.

Yeah, and large groups of people making poor voting decisions because they only pay attention at surface level to wrestling news (and also only in the one language they speak) is why like WWF getting 3 in best promotion while also being the Worst, Most-Disgusting, having the Worst Major Shows, Worst Television, et cetera is incredibly funny.

:hai:

- - -

I think the best result is the fact that all of the wwf weekly tv shows got votes towards being the Worst Weekly Television show. And since I think class B awards are one and done, that means multiple people voted NXT UK for Worst Weekly Television show and that is the funniest thing ever.

- Lol at Okada appearing on the list of most outstanding. He wasn't even in the top 10 most outstanding guys in New Japan

- FTR making top 3 tag teams is a bit much

- Eddie won something :neckbeard:

- The top 10 matches list looks like all total bangers, real happy the Hangman/Silver/Reynolds Brodie tribute got on there

- Do people really still care about Conor McGregor in 2021? Really?

- AEW with the top 7 feuds of the year

- Britt/Taichi/Tay/The Hash all there for most improved :unsmith:

- Who the hell is Matthew Justice?

- Ricochet is exactly where he deserves to be (and he's happy to be there). So many great flippy bois have come up since he joined the E, he's really not that special any more

- TOA HENARE ON THE LIST FOR MOST UNDERRATED PUSH HIM GEDO :argh:

- Rookie of the Year goes to someone who's wrestled two matches

- Was the 10th October G1 show the one with Taichi/Ishii and Okada/Shingo on it? That show was incredible

- I enjoyed Kenny and Adam getting the 1-2-3 for best move

- How the gently caress did WWE pushing sexual abusers and Bushiroad loving over Kyoko Kimura both finish so low ugh

- Dark Side of the Ring is so good

ROCK HARD
Basically everybody hates everything about WWE with the sole exception of NXT which a lot of people still kinda like. If NXT didn't exist WWE would get even fewer positive votes than it did.

edit: I take back what I said. McAfee winning best rookie over literally anybody else is silly. If all Hobbs had done was sneer in the background while Taz insults Darby Allin it would've been better than anything McAfee did.

He headlined the biggest PPV of 2020 and most likely 2021, probably outdrawing AEW's entire business alone, so yeah.

He's the personification of a guy who loved ECW for people getting hit in the head with chairs and doing insanely dangerous bumps. I don't feel like pulling it up, but dude loves getting hit in the head with a chair and jumping off high places.

AEW & NJPW I get but the WWE stan who reads the WON I can't wrap my head around. If you want to get red hot nude & mad you don't even need to sub, someone will post a summary of whatever the latest Lore of The Fiend is.

Awards are always going to be a combination of quality and popularity, with popularity taking the bigger share. If you go by the Academy Awards, then you'd think that the best film to come out in 1995 was Braveheart (when obviously it was The City Of Lost Children, I will not be taking questions at this time).

Lipstick Apathy
AEW getting 3 of the top 4 for best weekly TV show when they only have one TV show is pretty funny.

This time next year the top 10 will be dominated by AEW vlog content. Dynamite loses the top spot for Sammy’s vlog on the basis of Fuego finally hitting that tornado ddt in a Glacier sanctioned match.

Tony Khan must be pretty excited by those results though.

Fun Shoe
NJPW hasn't been as good as it used to be in previous years, but they've still got one of the best rosters in the world and despite the current booking they can still pull off a big match feel like nobody's business.

The messed up thing is that WWE is still as highly rated as it is.

Matthew Justice is a very nice, very friendly, very stupid, huge wrestler who takes absurd risks in hardcore matches in front of an audience of between 8 and 12 people.

IWTV did a very good documentary about him going to wrestle in Zona 23 in Mexico at pretty much the split second that people realised Covid was going to be a big deal. The trailer is available here:

I watched him win both of AIW's belts after recreating the Myles Garrett helmet shot with Bill Alfonso. (it was more like 60 to 100 people)

Mostly very reasonable results. WWE is still rated too highly even though they got a bunch of worst of results, but I understand why.

2020 Okada getting more Outstanding votes than Shiozaki is some real nonsense. loving Gedo getting more booker votes than NOSAWA and Takagi combined. Nah.

Watch something other than AEW, NJPW & WWE
I know! It's incredible that readers of a US-based newsletter don't pay much attention to any Japanese promotions with limited US distribution! How can they even call themselves wrestling fans if they don't devote their life to watching only the most obscure wrestling from Glorious Nippon?

But also lol that Rey Fenix can outright win multiple awards and rank in others and still be one of the most underrated.

Maybe folks who are flaming someone for being somewhat dismayed over the lack of recognition for top performers in non-American companies should actually learn a thing or two about the history of the WON awards

I knew the readership's increased and its interests have changed but I'm still surprised to see any WWE talent placing above Go Shiozaki. That wouldn't have happened not too long ago.
