Sibyl Disobedience posted:It's funny that this should come up. I've only had Ready Player One ranted about to me, but it occurred to me that the Lyctor Trial was kinda like what the contest in Ready Player One would be if it were in a book that wasn't insipid. Ready Player One is pretty much the "'member berries" from South Park in book form. Aech is a black lesbian who functions as the main character's "best bud" in RP1, presenting herself as a white male like the protagonist. Part of that is because of the advantages (lack of racist bullshit) in doing so. It's a bit ham-fisted but not deliberately offensive. Another part is that Aech feels more comfortable around guys, especially straight guys. It's not a sexual thing so much as kind of a "comfort zone" thing. And it's less awful in that book than I'm likely describing it here. There's no such of shame or inferiority about Aech in terms of all that. She is who she is and she likes who she is. Gideon seems like a smarter, truer take on that. She likes porn and dirty/bad jokes and cool weapons. She seems like somebody who'd like to be "one of the guys" without being a guy, even a straight guy. For the record I'm sorry if I stepped on anyone's issue in fumbling toward my point, such as it was. I did not mean to do that if I did.

Especially Crux. Because I really want to read Muir's description of Crux's "I just shat my pants" face.

At this stage all I really want out of Alecto is to give me some basic answers about the world-built, and I'll be super happy. It's already a cherished trilogy no matter what the third one does.

I think after reading Harrow (and hasn't the author even explicitly said) that these books are essentially lesbian romantic wish fulfillment which can be taken to mean Gideon and Harrow will have a relatively happy and romantically flavored resolution?quote:Harrow, you need to pick the red skull to destroy necromany forever, the blue skull to control the resurrection beasts or the green skull to make everyone undead.

When Gideon's voice finally re-emerged in the 2nd book I was almost physically relieved Gideon is such a blunt force trauma of a character. I don't need a "riding into the sunset" ending in the third book but it would be nice if some characters like sextus and gideon are returned to some form of life at the end

There can be an ending where Gideon and Harrow are both happy and not with each other romantically. Which is what I'm thinking will happen but I don't see myself being disappointed with anything that happens.

There's one spot on her tumblr where Muir summarizes all three books thusly: - Gideon was about two girls crammed into a bloodstained get-along shirt - Harrow is about two girls who are not enjoying this Duke of Ed residential very much - Alecto will be about girls being annoyed that it is legal for their exes to talk to each other

I somehow always pictured Aiglamene as being way less swole. I mean she is described as being almost as ancient as Crux. When I'm imagining character voices in my head, for Aiglamene I tend to go to Shohreh Aghdashloo for some reason.

So, I started a book club, and because all my real-life friends are very, very bored, they agreed to join and even let me pick the book. In a fit of whimsy that I may regret since most of my friends are not nerds, I chose the one about lesbian necromancers in space. Does anybody have some ideas for good discussion topics?

Off the top of my head: Favorite/Least Favorite House/Character/etc. Interesting foreshadowing, like the part where they found the dead body in the furnace. as an example When did they figure out the mystery, which leads into The symbolism of Dulcinea's name/the makeup/being stripped bare, either metaphorically or literally. "One flesh, one end." Also, I just like the poem about the 9 houses, idk how much you can pull out of that.

The thing about necromancers is you also have to ask the question if/how you're ever going to see that character again at those same points. Wonderful seeing just how wrong everyone is.

I’m curious if they get overwhelmed at the amount of characters in the first book. What really tripped me up is sometimes they’re referred to by name and sometimes by “cavalier of x house” etc.

Baron Tettares, Reverend Mother, etc etc. Well, and the cavs all call eachother by house number and nothing else.

Ask at the beginning of the book "which character do you think would make the best sex pal?" Both setting up the tone of the story pretty well AND a good groaner.
