That means the end of January 2022 will be the target date by which everyone should have received their second dose and I can't see myself being willing to drop precautions before then.

Yeah I don't think it's prudent to drop major precautions before most people have had their second dose and case numbers have dropped to next to nothing.

On the other hand up here in Canada early signs are that they're going to be pushing "Everything is fine after one shot, open 'er up" by summer which is probably going to go disastrously now that all second shots are delayed four months lol.

My dad and I were vaccinated in the pfizer trial and my brother is just about 2 weeks past his first dose of Moderna, so we've just passed the threshold on being relatively safe I think. That means I'm probably going to be more comfortable taking care of some less-essential (but still important) purchases I have been putting off, but I'll be waiting for local numbers to be lower before I do anything frivolous. Currently we're way down on deaths and hospitalizations and about 25% in my county have had their first dose so I'm expecting things to continue to trend in the right direction, but there's no reason to jump the gun after a year of being locked down.

Sound to me like you've got the right idea.

When you are starting to see that, in your particular country, there is no community spread (ie all cases are imported) and a large percentage of the population is vaccinated, you might start to consider easing up on precautions. Definitely not before then, and it could be argued that even the imported cases are a big enough risk to continue distancing etc until even later.

It's still lovely, especially since it could have been handled better and resulted in more US allies getting better treatment. But no one should have expected otherwise.

It's easy to say that with hindsight, but what if the mRNA vaccines had gone differently? What if they only had, I dunno, 30% efficacy or less? What if there was an unacceptably high rate of Severe Side Effects like in previous animal vaccines? If they had turned out to be bunk, we had to wait on AZ and JnJ doses, we'd be having a much different conversation right now, both with each other and the rest of the world.

Lot of gambling going on, the U.K. had no idea that going 11 weeks between shots was the right thing to do (it’s actually working well for us) even the vaccine companies were going mad and saying it should be 10 days. But a pissed off older tory voter base would have gone batshit if they hadn’t quickly got down to the 60-70 year old group and here we are.

If the domestic product had been unsafe or ineffective the correct move for a nation state would be to pivot production to the vaccine that does work, be it through a process that was licensed, a process developed independently, or a process that was outright stolen. Pretty much every nation state worthy of the designation has the ability to dictate what domestic companies do in wartime and emergencies (if not de jure then de facto through outright bullying). The conversation would be "how fast can biotech companies in the USA pivot and how can they do it even faster?" and not, "why can't we get some of that European vaccine shipped to us?"

Honestly, while I have no intention of changing most of my behavior (with the possible exception of being able to finally resume grappling with my fellow martial arts instructors who have also been vaccinated), after I hit the second dose, I don't expect to be scared anymore. I'm still going to keep masking up in public and maintaining social distancing, but it will be primarily to set a good example and encourage safe behavior in others rather than a concern over my own well-being.

At some point before the end of 2021 I might even set foot in a restaurant again, though that still feels crazy right now.

Very much the same for me. Although I plan on traveling and visiting any of my friends / family who also have been vaccinated. Outside of that circle of people I will maintain social distancing and still wear a mask. In fact, I hope wearing a mask out in public remains a thing because it's just a great common courtesy to not spew your germs everywhere, especially if you use public transit. Because of the masking and social distancing I haven't caught so much as a cold this entire year and from what I read these measures in some areas made flu infection rates go down to zero.

A lot of the time you simply can't pivot vaccine production like that because it's insanely specialist and making one sort has very little in common with another. Pfizer/moderna especially are so cutting edge there are I think a whole three sites in the world capable of making them, this is after being written unlimited checks to expand those sites/build new ones.

Even making the equipment to produce many of the 'high tech' western vaccines is specialist enough you can count on one hand the amount of places in the world that can do it.

Are there very few cases and I'm fully vaccinated and we just need boosters yearly? Yeah, I'll probably still get takeout and wear a mask out publicly, but I wouldn't be opposed to running around with my windows down. I wouldn't be worried about doing tens of funerals every single weekend.

Has there been much solid research done as to how the vaccines are going to be effected by the variants? Here in Toronto health experts are bracing for a third wave and say that projections show the new variants will overtake the original strain before long. I’m just getting this mounting sense of dread that the last year of lockdowns and social distancing will have been for nothing. Not that I can get a vaccine anytime soon anyway.
