I don't understand what this house is trying to be

you have part of it going for this sort of rustic farmhouse vibe with the dining table/chairs and fireplace

then you have some incredibly 90s contemporary poo poo that looks to have been stolen from the Sopranos' house (kitchen stuff, that table lamp)

and then you have some extremely modern lighting fixtures, like the one above the kitchen table which is a PH pendant from Louis Poulsen (or a knockoff)

It's an 80s rustic contemporary with original kitchen and bathrooms (upgraded appliances), stove is probably newer and furniture is whatever they had lying around to stage it with. The lighting was probably just picked out from the hardware store as a generic contemporary-looking thing; I don't think most people would recognize it as as being a knockoff of a particular designer tbh.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just the leftovers of the owner's 80s-90s eclectic collection.

it's just funny because the styles are so completely different. unless you were really into modernism you would have never heard of Louis Poulsen, and it's not sold in many stores. So it's just weird seeing it next to the super 90s lighting - I didn't even notice that one on the back right wall!

They also make remote controlled motorized pulldown ("fireplace") mounts now.

The new paint is curing and it's getting so nice and satiny and deep now.

The rosewood is no longer offered, so he's got an older and thus possibly more valuable chair.

I mean I've got a masters degree in industrial design and while I'm a big Charles & Ray fan I will also probably never buy one, but thats more due to the fact that we are closing on a reproduction of a 1740's Williamsburg house and it would look absolutely hella out of place.

He said he got it at what was essentially an estate sale from someone who didn't really know what they had so it's probably worth way more than he paid at least.

They look comfy but any oversized seat and foot rest would probably be comparably so, and less than a sofa so deep I can swim in it.

Still, they are pretty objects, and I think that's about the appeal. Get a knockoff and be done with it.

from what the blu dot manager told me, there is an actual foundation that part of the sales of stuff like Eames and Saarinen go to that is added to the price. Basically no current or future designer will have something like that, it's just old dudes who only have b/w pics of them wearing glasses and smoking pipes that have been enshrined in the ancient stone tablet of modern design (there is no actual tablet - or is there????)

https://eamesfoundation.org/
https://www.saarinenfoundation.org/

but with more "current" stuff, the way I see it is that it's not just a functional piece of furniture, it's a piece of art. People pay thousands, or sometimes tens of thousands of dollars to put art on their wall, so furniture you both love the functionality of and like the look of seems like a relative bargain. having something you really enjoy seeing every day is really valuable!

Pretty sure I've never seen "sunken hallway" before.

Wonder if they raised everything else to run some mechanicals or sewage or something.

It basically makes it a galley kitchen but in an open-concept way. If it weren't sunken and someone was using the hallway side of the island they would be encroaching on the hallway in an awkward way.

It's unique (and I agree a weird tripping potential), but kind of a novel way to maximize the counterspace without sacrificing the open look.
