There’s a big difference between seeing something in the future and seeing all possible outcomes of a decision and choosing one of them. Almost always precognition or psychohistory or whatever you call it is extremely limited and often has a lot yungian bullshit involved, or Cassandra syndrome, or inverted causality loops. You’re free to disagree that it’s derivative, but at least understand the argument and engage with it. When I read the rear end in a top hat tree I immediately thought of the short story and then the hilariously bad Nic Cage adaptation - but I also wouldn’t be shocked if rothfuss couldn’t be bothered to read much speculative fiction.

I'll admit their powers are similar, but even there they have differences. The power of the golden man has reduced him to a feral animal, I like to think that's because the infinite possibilities he sees and chooses from are so complex that it takes all of his brain power to pick the futures where he fucks women and escapes unharmed. Whereas the tree is just God, or Dr Manhattan. PKD didn't invent omniscience

You all are putting more thought into this then rothfuss did. Magic mystical trees are a extremely common thing in tons of cultures. He just grabbed a convenient idea to justify Kvothe being a epic badass and smashed it together with sex bomb trickster fae goddess that Kvothe could lose his virginity to as another sign of what an alpha male chad he is. Given how "impossible" book 3 is to write it seems extremely likely that most of those supposedly deep meaningful plot events were just written for no lasting purpose and now he's got an entire buildup of macguffins he didn't think through and is too proud to pull a Chris Carter and just admit he was making it all up as he went, there was no finished story planned out.

I read the first few pages of this thread and I guess have an unpopular opinion. I liked the books? They did not change my life or anything, but I enjoyed my time with them. So I have a few questions. 1) Worth reading Doors of Stone? 2) Any other books/series worth reading in the growing up/school/magic vibe? Someone suggested these to me because I loved Harry Potter as a kid (unpopular opinion 2!), and am without good ideas. Edit: I also loved when Granny Weatherwax showed up in Levinshir. Good stuff. Also I'm reading The Blacktongue Thief right now and it strikes me as somewhat similar to the good parts of Kingkiller except written by someone with a track of record of 5 self contained novels behind them. Character is a recent graduate of a thief guild school and has to go on a quest to pay back his tuition. The penalties for being in arrears to such people are stiff.

So I have a few questions. Deadly Education by Naomi Novik. Someone who seems to be fated to be the future Dark One is in their magic school. Also magic schools are basically one quarter school and three quarters extra dimensional prisons used to try and stop monsters from eating wizards as they enter puberty. which only semi works so you have to spend most of your time looking out for monsters that will kill you. Red sister by Mark Lawrence is also pretty popular though I mostly just found it fine. Girl with lots of potential is recruited to religious order of magic warrior monks.
