I guess all the crazier designs in general look super appealing, but that's probably because my own house looks kinda lovely inside in a way that subtly bugs me every day. My wife and I have owned a house for 3 years and it still looks like a barebones rented apartment, cuz neither of us have the design mentality to take on the challenge, even though we have a decent budget for furniture and decorations. Once we talked to a local interior designer who quoted us $60,000 to do just 3 rooms total of our 5 and we went "HEH!" with big anime sweats and hung up. How do you guys approach designing your living space?

smoobles posted:How do you guys approach designing your living space? I just bought a house, so I'm actually getting to paint and decorate for real now. It's a blast. My approach is basically to pick something I like and work around that. I spend a lot of time at thrift stores and such looking for stuff--almost all my accessories and smaller furniture is from thrift stores, estate and yard sales, and fb marketplace. My office is based on my grandparents' house, which had a lot of peachy-pink walls with white trim, oriental rugs, and interesting light fixtures. I also have some of the same art they had in their house. For my living room, I'm basing it on a color palette of beiges and greens/teals, which are the paint colors I had between what the previous owner left and what I had from other projects. I got some velvet teal curtains and I'm painting an ombre accent wall. Eventually I'd like a green velvet couch too. The plant room is based on plants and wrought iron stands (we bought this house in part because it has a perfect room for plants). All the furniture/decor is secondhand. Which houses in this thread do you like? What do you like about them? Are there elements you could recreate in your own living space on a smaller, cheaper scale? edit: command strips are great for hanging art in rentals, but I will say that if you leave them up for ten years they become less removable.

The Zillow search term of the day is "Hugh Newell Jacobsen". I've already posted a couple of his houses ITT - this one and this one but there are several more for sale. Jacobsen is the main guy responsible for the contemporary white void houses that were popular at the turn of the 21st century and still pop up from time in new megamansion builds. I like some of his stuff but a lot of it is too sterile for my taste. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/5421-E-Husking-Peg-Rd-Chana-IL-61015/2069793088_zpid/ 2001 https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/7710-Georgetown-Pike-Mc-Lean-VA-22102/51726091_zpid/ 1971 https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/113-Joaquin-Rd-Telluride-CO-81435/124648833_zpid/1995 interesting furniture choices https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/124-Eshelman-Rd-Lancaster-PA-17601/9758785_zpid/ 1980, updated 2010 I hope the exterior is intended as an ironic statement about the state of domestic architecture, but I'm not sure how self-aware Jacobsen is https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1068-Wilson-Way-Telluride-CO-81435/124649109_zpid/ 2011 welp looks like he's serious https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3038-N-St-NW-Washington-DC-20007/428632_zpid/ now here's an interesting one, ca. 1805 Federal mansion extensively renovated by Jacobsen

Maybe because I've looked at a stupidly large number of real estate photos at this point, but I can tell when the lighting is just a little off and the space is just a little too clean. Also the fact that the renders seem to use the same color schemes as every other rendered photo (white/gray/black/beige/sometimes blue) and the same bland furniture.

Interested in a sectional that is leather and really soft. We want something that you melt into to watch movies or relax on. This Sofa from west elm has the look we’re interested in. I’ve read some quality issues about them though. https://www.westelm.com/m/products/haven-leather-2-piece-terminal-chaise-sectional-h3517/?pkey=chaven Our budget is pretty high for this. I would say no more than 10k. 5-6k is the sweet spot, and quality furniture under that is gravy.

If you search this thread or the Home Ownership thread (I can't remember which one it was) for the word sofa there was a big long discussion recently about sofa/couches that had some recommended manufacturors listed. I have also personally been on the search for one and briefly considered West Elm but ultimately passed on them because of the tremendous volume of negative reviews.
