Good furniture is expensive as hell. I heard that when I was young and didn't believe it.

I will probably have my rear end resting on cheap garbage until the day I die.

Mission style was a contemporary of the arts and crafts movement that used some similarly simple forms but without the pretense of hand-crafting or construction methods as decoration. They get lumped together based on form by people who either don't know or don't care what the movement was about.

I think.

The Arts and Crafts movement was late 19th century anti-industrial idealism focused on hand craftsmanship. As I understand it, there are three main commercial forms that came out of it in the US. Gustav and Leo Stickley's Craftsman works, named after Gustav's magazine The Craftsman. Mission style, which was east coast US work by Joseph McHugh. And of course the Chicago-based Prairie style, most associated with Frank Lloyd Wright. All are, outside of truly high end stuff, factory made with handcraft style details.

They're based around use of natural woods with vertical and horizontal lines as well as paneling to complement the grain of the wood (often cherry or quartersawn white oak), handcrafted details, and simplicity of design.

Stickley's still in business, but very much high end for my budget, even if they do make exactly what I want.

Which is why early Craftsman architects put so many built-ins in the houses he designed. They wanted people to only have to make/buy a few pieces of furniture apart from the house itself. For, say, a living room with a built-in seat and built-in bookcases on the walls, all that would be needed would be a few chairs and/or settee and a writing table. The chairs could do double-duty for the dining room. The substantial closet space in the bedrooms negated the need for a wardrobe and separate chest of drawers. All dining room and kitchen storage was built-in as well.

e.g.

The Craftsman magazine is a great resource for design inspiration and woodworking patterns and socialist commentary - I've linked an archive in the OP.

Does anyone know where I can find more info about a "van pelt" manufacturer?

I'm looking at buying some used furniture, and it has this manufacturer's mark. I've seen a bunch of other pieces with the same mark, and they always say the designer is "Bas van Pelt" ...but that seems a *bit* weird, given that (1) often, the date of manufacture is listed as in the 60's, even though van Pelt died in 1945 (a few days after being released from a concentration camp, jesus christ), and (2) his company, as far as I can tell, was never called, "van pelt." It was something like "My Home" and a decade or so after he died, when his wife and daughter were running it, it was named "'Bas van Pelt Binnenhuisarchitektuur."

I could see the mark being simplified, but I can't find anything to confirm if/when/how that happened. I have this hunch well, worry that anything with that van pelt mark is a cheaper knock off or something.

Looks like it is Bas van Pelt.

The same logo appears on this wall mounted bar unit:
https://www.catawiki.com/nl/l/35383233-bas-van-pelt-living-bar-meubels-1

The Dutch Institute for Art History says "cooperated with Jan Piets sinds 1936. After the war and the death of Bas van Pelt, his wife JH van Pelt-Jansen continued the business, after 1953 in cooperation with Janni van Pelt and Drick Brouwers. In 1974 Janni van Pelt took over her role as board member [the corporate officer title doesn't translate and doesn't even make much sense in Dutch]"
https://rkd.nl/nl/explore/artists/62485
About the business:
"In honor of the anniversary and in homage to Bas van Pelt, the name of company was changed from "My Home Woninginrichting" to "Bas van Pelt Binnenhuisarchitectuur". His daughter Janni and son in law Dick Brouwers were company officers."
https://rkd.nl/nl/explore/artists/Pelt%20Binnenhuisarchitektuur%2C%20Bas%20van
Maybe the guys listed on the company page (Bodegom and Van den Berg) were the designers by that time, but this is a bit unclear.
