the smt games are super sparin with revival spells too, so in 4 if your mc wipes your only real shot is to blitz whatever killed him and hope you kill it first. idk, both versions have their problems

Hint: He doesn't care.
Yakuza 7 has the game over on MC death and so that means that you have to keep your best gear for your MC and pamper him full of health at all times, what is this an escort mission? this lowers strategies imo

im smt 4 and 4.5, this adds value to the skill that lets demons use items so they can revival bead your dead rear end and that's cool

But seriously I’m undecided. I’m on 4 now which is a game over only on full party wipe and it’s an interesting contrast. Both being able to save anywhere and being able to survive the MC’s death makes it so that enemies are way more unforgiving and you’ll regularly get one- or two-shotted even by regular enemies, as opposed to 3 where it’s harder to get owned completely like that but the consequences are harsher if you do
I used to think that the "harsh" design is just old and obsolete, but great games that stand the test of time like Nocturne do really make it shine and it adds a whole different atmosphere to the game. If you haven't really experienced the game, it's easy to think "quick death = sucks, also can't save anywhere = fail", but I've come to really appreciate the mood it puts me in. Like, should I just keep my health topped off all the time? But the MP cost so much money to heal back. How worth are HP cost skills to wipe out an encounter? How good are protection against element skills really? Buff against random encounters y/n?

Just now I'm in a dungeon which has multiple save terminals which can send you back to the entrance. That's the real brilliance of the game here: it's not actually THAT harsh, you can save relatively often. But it keeps asking the risk/reward question. Do you keep going with half MP? Do you really want to walk all the way down here again? The save is there so that takes a lot of pressure off, but the question always remains. Sick game

Game over on MC death ftw. Why would demons continue to follow a weakling who died.

SMTIV Apocalypse brings it back on the hardest difficulty and that's the last one I played so I honestly forgot IV removed it, glad that it's back in SMTV

I don't think game over on MC death is bad but it's probably not good design to couple it with mudo/hama style spells that can target the MC. Maybe make them reduce his HP to 1 instead (they can still kill other enemies).

Note that I may be slightly biased at the moment on this one

yeah my only issue w it is that theres instant death spells that can kill the mc. coupled with no quicksaving theres a chance the game will just gently caress you over and waste your time

The game gives you plenty of things to defend against 1hko spells, stop being babies. Magatama, 3 different use items, spells, etc. Yeah you can get sniped but once you know who the mudo/hama enemies are it's hardly a major issue

this might have bothered me in other games, i can't recall specifics, but it's never been an issue in any SMT game i've played. they're just drat good.

I remember thinking it was bullshit that the final boss in FF13 had a death spell when no other enemy in the game had it. But now that I think about it there may have been one high level hunt monster that used it

metal gear??!?
I think if you go into a game knowing that if the MC dies it's game over then everything is fine.
Nocturne itself doesn't make a point of actually telling you this (it's prob in the manual somwhere) so if you don't know the first time that happens to you it's a very harsh lesson indeed.

After that though, you stop being a baby and play the game

the mc has to verbally walk everyone else thru the use of the revival bead or whatever every time, which is why when he dies its game over

I realize some demons are too loving stupid to use it but surely a fiend like Matador should know how.

Eh if you need a story justification I figure even good demons aren't going to want to keep following some chump that got himself killed. It's extremely funny that Dante can't be bothered reviving you though lol

Finished the Obelisk, was kind of boring but for all it got hyped up as a big tough dungeon it was pretty straightforward and the boss went down in a couple of turns. Didn't take as long to get to this point as I remember and kind of sad that I'm about halfway through already, I never want these games to end... but I've never played past this point before so I'm excited to see what's coming.

oh man, was thinking of going for a Strange Journey or Apocalypse replay after this (probably SJ because I never played the 3DS update) but might save myself for this so as not to get burned out. I've also meant to go back to Devil Survivor at some point but I got to the last day (week?) with only a couple of lovely routes available and got burned out lol.

I'm rocking a Wukong too, I knew phys was the way to go late game but it totally dominates already lol. I've just done another subway tunnel dungeon and these aren't really very good but I think I'm closing in on endgame...

The level cap is actually 255, the counter just stops at 99. So unless you go completely insane grinding you shouldn't have any problem picking up whatever Magatama skills you want.
