I have been studiously avoiding this thread to avoid spoilers, but I've hit the halfway point in Harrow and I've figured out a twist and I'm giddy. There's weirdness around the Saint of Duty's name because his real name is Gideon, but when Harrow sliced and diced her memory, she just ctrl-f-d/replaced "Gideon" with "Ortus" and so when she ran into some other guy named Gideon she was messed up. And now that I've got that figured out, more makes sense -- we know that the Saint of Duty kicked a Blood of Eden commander out of an airlock, and we know that 9!Gideon's mom was found floating in space only saying "Gideon." So the Saint of Duty is suspicious of Harrow because he's got the spirit mojo to sense the ghost of the daughter of a rebel leader hanging around her, probably in the sword. .

Anyway, pardon the live read but it was just so pleasant to figure that out before it was officially revealed.

Ahahaha that whole last quarter. What an amazing ride. Most importantly, Ortus' poetry is canonically good enough to revive the dead. Laughed out loud when Mattias asked why he was suddenly speaking in meter. Too bad we didn't see the fight against the Beast, and that even with the heroic charge of the ghost cavaliers, that wasn't enough to kill it. I had thought 9!Gideon might be OG Gideon's kid, but the whole elaborate Necrolord Sperm-Jacking scheme was a complete left turn. Never before has a threesome also been a Chekov's gun.

Augustine and Mercy did nothing wrong, Ianthe continues to suck. Gideon's narration was right, how can you choose the power-hoarding lying despot over your mentor?

And actually, the whole plot point about the Emperor concealing the perfect form of Lyctordom resolved some of my issues with the plot of Gideon. In the first book, I was sure Teacher had to have been suborned or malevolent, because why else would be practically encourage the participants to murder each other? And then I was offput when that was apparently how the Emperor wanted it, but he was portrayed as this kindly old man at the end. Well, now that makes a lot more sense -- he didn't want the lyctoral candidates to cooperate to rediscover the perfect formula, he wanted a pressure cooker to force them to take the shortcut and kill their cavaliers so they would remain weak enough to be controlled.

Also, my theory during Harrow was that the body in the Locked Tomb was the Emperor's cavalier (or original body, and the the 'emperor
was actually the cavalier's body piloted by the Tomb mind), and that the lyctoral process involved stuffing the body of one of the party's away safely/in stasis while the necromancer piloted the other. I discarded that when we it seemed that nope, the body of the cav is just destroyed, so I'm happy to see that was actually close to the mark.

Big questions:
That epilogue. Initially, I thought this was Alecto and John Gaius in the pre-resurrection days. I thought it was revealing that the Necrolord didn't revive everyone after an extinction event. He did whatever mojo created Alecto as a cavalier/zombie monster/battery as a proof of concept, then killed everyone and revived humanity on his terms. But then it says that the POV is Camilla, and I have no idea what that's about.

Harrow's last scene. My thought was initially that it represented Harrow giving into Alecto's possession/seduction -- that she'd been haunting Harrow for years, waiting for her to weaken so Harrow could be body-jacked. The timing would make sense, with the Emperor getting exploded weakening the blood ward. On the other hand, the porno mag in there made it seem like it was prepared by Gideon, and this is Harrow letting Gideon be in the driver's seat while she goes dormant. On the other other hand, Gideon doesn't want to be in the driver's seat, she wants to die, so it doesn't seem like she would prepare a nice little sleeping place. Also, it wouldn't look like the Locked Tomb.

I assume that it's the Blood of Eden ship that picked up Harrow's body at the end. Only one that makes sense.

I’m betting the BoE has Gideon the Ninth’s body and there will be Shenanigans with body/soul swapping. Also, the stuff that’s hosed up with the River will be solved by actually destroying the Emperor and Alecto.

The first part of this is confirmed in the extra material included at the end of the Harrow the Ninth paperback that someone posted a link to upthread.

Honestly, it’s pretty standalone. It doesn’t leave any major threads hanging for the specific story it covers and stands up quite well as it’s own book imo.

If you like the characters you’ll get into Harrow though, and that one has a pretty concrete ending, but with a massive thread waiting to be picked up, especially if you read the version with the extra bit at the end, and then you wind up having to play the waiting game with the rest of us.

Awesome, I wasn't sure if I'd just be kind of sitting on my hands waiting for the conclusion if I started reading now. I'm ok with wanting more, I just know if it's a super contiguous story I'm going to have forgotten everything that happened by the time Nona comes out.

It ends with a pretty solid conclusion albeit with a sequel hook to set the next book up. The story does occasionally signal that there are things happening that you're not not going to find out more about until later.

If you don't like waiting for books to be written then maybe hold off? My experience finishing Gideon was that I immediately wanted to read the sequel and after finishing the second book I immediately went and googled info on when the third would release.
