Also lol at the idea it's downhill from thirty, no wonder everyone is so frantic to die early.

I’m in my 30’s and finally feel like I have the guidebook on how to “live”. but I also didn’t marry two different people I would have ended up divorcing, didn’t have kids, and sacrificed a lot to build my own business instead of taking a safe career path. jury is still out of that works, but anyone telling me their getting “old” (at 36) is just telling me they already lost the game.

What's the Voltaire quote? History is filled with the sound of silken slippers going downstairs and wooden shoes coming up? I know that idea has been co-opted by Boomers complaining about participation trophies or whatever, but our society is full of coddled croc-wearing adult children who can't make moderate sacrifices even to save their own lives, let alone the lives of actual children.

Do they have wooden shoes in China?

To be fair, I'm a generally antisocial person but there's still things I miss. I miss my friends. I miss going to the Alamo Drafthouse for old movies. I miss visiting museums. I miss all the amazing restaurants downtown, many of which either do not deliver or at the least would not deliver to the Bronx given the distance. And I'm not a very social person; I don't do bars or clubs or whatnot, and yet I've still - even without the fear and stress - had my life demonstrably made less enjoyable and fulfilling thanks to COVID.
Like it's not worth the tradeof, but let's not make light of it; having to behave responsibly in this pandemic - while absolutely the moral and practical thing to do - sucks and is absolutely making life less enjoyable and rewarding - although far less so than the alternative would.

And I can only imagine how much more it sucks for younger folks in their teens. Their parents and their nation are trying to murder or maim them and their options are either to miss out on some of the most exciting and fun experiences of youth, or to become complicit in murder and mayhem - and not the fun kind.

https://localnews8.com/news/ap-idaho/2021/09/08/covid-19-deaths-overwhelm-morgue-in-cowlitz-county/

quote:

LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — A recent increase in COVID-19 deaths has overwhelmed a southwest Washington county’s storage capacity, prompting the coroner to ask the commissioners declare an emergency to allow the county to bring in a refrigeration trailer. Cowlitz County commissioners agreed Tuesday to the request to help expand capacity until the new morgue is ready for staff to move into in about a month. The Daily News reports at least eight county residents died due to COVID-19 between Aug. 31 and Sept. 6. Coroner Tim Davidson said the morgue and the county’s funeral homes are maxed out on capacity. All together, the facilities can typically hold 45 bodies and right now have about 65.

Pre-COVID article about Huey Newton's theories about death and suicide that I think are relevant. Black people in the US have been super exploited for centuries, but with the US state ignoring mass death in all sectors of the US working class at this point, I think some of the theorizing there is relevant.

quote:

Huey Newton, one of the founding leaders of the Oakland Black Panther Party (BPP), brought death and revolutionary activity together in his analysis of suicide. The BPP organized to unite the Black community against the forces that oppressed them in the United States and the world. Huey Newton's theory of suicide was informed by his experience as a historically enslaved and exploited subject of Black America, as well as the US government's response to Black resistance. As the Panthers organized self-defense initiatives and grassroots "survival" programs, the US government worked in collusion with local police departments to destroy the Party. The FBI's COINTEPRO infiltrated every chapter of the BPP, murdering or imprisoning much of its leadership. To this day, Black Panther members like Mumia Abu Jamal remain in prison while the Black population outside the walls experiences murder every 28 hours by some form of law enforcement. This is the context in which Newton produced a theory of suicide that redefined the experience of death for the purposes of revolutionary change.

[quote]Newton's examination brought him to analyze two forms of suicide: reactionary suicide and revolutionary suicide. Reactionary suicide is most commonly known as the act of killing oneself. The indignities of US capitalism produce severe internal strife. Racism and patriarchy exacerbates class exploitation and tears apart communities. Reactionary suicide peaks during capitalist economic crises and imperialist wars, where economic conditions and trauma are most severe. Huey Newton understood that Black America was a dispossessed community whose wealth, culture, and history were stolen as a result of racist and capitalist exploitation. This historical condition increased the tendency of reactionary suicide in the Black community. Thus, Newton and the BPP leadership organized with the intent of empowering the Black community through collective work. Each concrete medical clinic, free breakfast program, and Panther school were organized to move community to confront the racist, capitalist power structure and embrace revolutionary socialism and communalism. The BPP concluded that only confidence, discipline, and concrete political education could build a powerful movement against the forces that cause reactionary suicide.

“The FBI's COINTEPRO infiltrated every chapter of the BPP, murdering or imprisoning much of its leadership.”

Revolutionary suicide, in contrast, develops out of the recognition that one is a "doomed man" after making the conscious choice to participate in the struggle for self-determination and freedom. Newton's theory of revolutionary suicide placed the utmost importance not on death itself, but how it occurs. US government repression killed many Black Panther Party members in an attempt to weaken the growing spirit of resistance in the Black community. Newton's theory of revolutionary suicide connected suicide and death to the fight for a dignified, collective humanity. The person or movement partaking in revolutionary suicide has chosen to confront death by fighting for liberation. Those who commit revolutionary suicide live on through the concrete fight for freedom, self-determination, socialism and Black Power. In other words, a revolutionary can be killed, but not the revolution

Huey Newton's work on suicide was produced in a period of time where revolutionary upheaval was at a high point in the US. Today, we must find a way to apply theories of suicide and pre-mature death in a way that fights the forces that cause them. The potential of being brutally murdered by US imperialism while we struggle to meet our individual and collective needs creates the perfect conditions for reactionary suicide. The US ruling class exploits feelings of purposelessness, depression, and confusion to manufacture consent to their rule. Death and suicide are two of the most uncomfortable, yet inevitable, consequences of US capitalism. However, as Huey Newton teaches us, to confront the meaning of our mortality in the face of a powerful enemy can give us positive direction in the fight to free ourselves from the chains of this system.

The people who think life is over at 30 are the people who peaked in high school

You are not that important. We will all die. Some sooner than others. After 30 your life is all downhill and you are hurtling towards death the only question is when. So why live the rest of your very short and unimportant existence in constant anguish and fear of something you truly have zero control over?

Speaking as somebody in her sixties, hell no. My years between 30-50 were wonderful, and absolutely better than my 20s. In my 50s I became disabled, which is an outlier adn should not be counted. Yes, I'm a boomer, and yes, that matters in the equation. However, when I think about what was good about those two decades, it's about major increases in self-confidence, knowing my worth, and my abilities. It's also about having and raising my children, which isn't everybody's goal.

In a hosed economy and a hosed world, you will still learn more about who you are and what you can do -- and I don't mean work per se -- in life after 30 than you did at 30.

One of the things that helps keep me from suicide is righteous indignation and stubborn defiance. If fascists want me dead - and they do - then they are going to have to do it themselves. I am not in the business of doing dirty work for fascists, and like loving hell will my last action in life being carrying out a murder on behalf of fascists.

half of people in there 30s in the US are not going to be dead though by 2036 though. they can still be exploited and wealth sucked from them for decades. expecting to pass away soon and just trying to live your life for a few years because change is impossible is what the people responsible for the death and despair want.
