Honestly, unless Good!Satoko comes back in a big way I can't see anything that we got from the first 13 episodes of Sotsu that was necessary. Neither the rest of the gang or Teppei proved relevant in the end, it's all Rika vs Satoko. They could have saved themselves even more money and just made a single 24 episode series easily. Stick the gun episode, Sotsu 14 and 15 after the end of Gou and I suspect the show would be improved overall. It looks like the manga team agrees and is going to have a normal goddamn plot so I suspect it's going to end up as the superior narrative.

I knew there were going to be plot divergences as soon as I saw that a VN and a manga were running alongside the anime. We still need to see if the last episode of Sotsu brings a conclusion (satisfaction pending) to literally anything at this point, but the other mediums already have plenty to fix in post.

I liked it. This whole season has been stupid and dull torture porn and this was at least some exciting emotional conflict. Would have been great if this all happened like 8 episodes ago. There's also something very cathartic when "mastermind" villains get called out for actually having really petty, pathetic motivations.

The confirmation that Rika stayed about as obsessed with Satoko as ever at St. Lucia sure fits. And funnily enough, she didn't want Satoko to give her any space to live her life - she wanted Satoko to remain right by her side the entire time and was confused and upset when she didn't join the club. But even as she kept inviting Satoko to hang out with her new posse, Satoko kept turning her down because it was never just Rika approaching her. Two girls disconnecting over refusing to be the first to seek out the other privately, and not trusting that their feelings were staying true despite the separation. Maybe the Angel Mort meeting was just going to be Rika trying to appeal to Satoko again to join her tea club with her Hinamizawa friends backing her up. Hard to say what'd have happened without Eua's meddling, though I kinda doubt Satoko would do anything quite as dramatic. But hey, Rika's willing to destroy everything to stay together with Satoko, so maybe that's what the girl needed to hear all along. Time to see what Hanyuu's miracle will be, I suppose.

Episode 15: Rika doesn't kill Satoko but she's still mad so they fight until exhausted. Eua gets cracked and becomes Hanyuu-sized. It's back to the original...ish world. Rika leaves alone in 1987 for St. Lucia, but she and Satoko promise to meet again when something else cries. They still have witch eyes. you plays, montage shows it's not quite as it was before - Teppei is still good now, etc. Satoshi wakes up.

good finale. liked the part where they threw the sword off the bridge, though I would've liked some more conservative camera angles for the face-punching segments (even if ep14 was an order of magnitude worse in that regard). the witch origin story stuff was laid out a little plainly (see: rika and satoko's final exchange, which is just a rehash of some of their umineko lines); I think they could've afforded to get a bit more metaphorical/indirect with it, especially since everyone realized it a season ago. to my shock, the boring hanyuu/eua stuff had a payoff, though it felt like an anticlimax after the rika/satoko fight (the thing I actually cared about) was implicitly resolved. sotsugyou: a decent show when it's not rehashing the original anime and/or earlier parts of itself

I'd say this was a fine story that was more than twice as long as it needed to be because it rehashed Higurashi's structure unnecessarily.

Finale ramblings: Could have been worse. I liked how their argument devolved from DBZ battle to hair pulling. I do appreciate that they showed us the split timeline although that just leaves me with more questions about the nature of the fragment worlds in Higurashi. It feels like one was showing what really happened and the other was a fan fiction bottle fragment Satoko tossed in the ocean. I'll be interested to see people's interpretations. All the people waiting for their Umineko fan service got their wish. It was a bit eye-rolling but at least it wasn't Bern and Lambda flying off into the sky and winking at the camera. Good to see Eua get her comeuppance. gently caress off you useless non-character. There have been a lot of crazy theories about where this show was headed but I always expected it to boil down to a pretty simple, human story in the end. I've figured we were going to get the old "if you love something set it free" ending for a while now so having Rika and Satoko agree to go their separate ways only to eventually reunite was a blindingly obvious conclusion. It's still kind of unsatisfying especially after last week's battle where they were reiterating their love for each other and offering to destroy everything else in the world. It's silly that they each had to give up on the whole being together part of their dreams for a while when we know that going to St. Lucia and staying in Hinamizawa weren't really what either needed in the first place. Rika needs new experiences, Satoko needs a less intense school environment where she fits in. Surely there's a fragment where they could have reached a happy compromise and found a high school outside of Hinamizawa that wasn't run like a prison. Ultimately this series ended up being pretty drat disappointing. Gou gave us a pretty interesting setup but Sotsu failed to deliver on it. The only thing that mattered in the end was that fragments Satoko forgiving Teppei. They Satoko vs Satoko thing was barely followed up on apart from that one line at the end. Other than that the only thing the answer arcs managed to do was destroy any sympathy for Satoko that Gou had built up which I think really worked against the show and hurt its ability to deliver its themes. I'm sure a lot of people will come away angry about Satoko not getting her karmic retribution or even reflecting on what she'd done but the story was never really interested in that. The audience is just expected to laugh along with Eua and accept the idea that nothing that happened in the bad fragments matters as long as things work out in the end. Also come on, how could they show Satoshi waking up without giving us the reunion? I wasn't keen on that last episode. Eua gets nicked once, and that counts as a miracle so she fucks off forever? Thats a weak resolution that also leaves the question of who she is unanswered. As for the rest of the episode: I agree with the idea that Satoko and Rika would learn to spend time apart was inevitable and it is technically the most fitting conclusion to this story. But the happy-ish ending felt unearned. I would be more positive about it if Sotsu wasn't a whole season, but rather a 5-6 episode arc right after Gou. Instead we spent the last 14 episodes watching Satoko systematically torture Rika over and over again, that we had already watched once before. So the whole everything working out in the end after the girls duke it out for 5 minutes just leaves a sour aftertaste in my mouth. All in all, Sotsu was a thoroughly unsatisfying show that would have been better if 2/3 of it was not already in Gou.

J-Spot posted:Finale ramblings: Could have been worse. Yeah, pretty much. I was set up for disappointment so this was slightly higher than my expectations. Almost everything from Sotsu did turn out to be pointless. You can go straight from Gou to episode 14 and then just watch all the amazing Satoko moments on youtube. Also not really happy with the ending for Rika and Satoko. The Witches becoming Bern and Lambda is a good ending in terms of their relationship but the beings they left behind could have had better endings. I personally don't think you can have an Umineko-style 'what really happened' explanation in Higurashi. Magic, Witches, Gods and Looping are all real in Higurashi, there are no tricks. Rika and Satoko definitely end up at an earlier loop than St. Lucia in the end. One thing I did like was the reveal that Satoko did legitimately try to do well at St.Lucia for potentially thousands of years (possibly metaphorical?) but her ADHD is so strong it's just impossible for her. I suppose that would be before she watched Rika's loops. I dunno why she'd do that in her prep-loops. Explains why she went so loving nuts. Eua getting her memory device cracked (it also properly becomes horns and attaches to her head) and becoming Hanyuu-sized suggests that maybe she went back in time to become Hanyuu? It's pretty obvious that she let Hanyuu win what with saying she deserves a reward though, so maybe it was just a visual hint that they're linked and something to sell Hanyuu's 'miracle'. It's a really huge miss that Hanyuu was never curious about this godlike being who showed up out of nowhere and kept hinting they are/were the same person. I have never given a single poo poo about Satoshi and never will. Nephthys fucked around with this message at 19:49 on Sep 30, 2021 |

Alright, I'm bad at this stuff but here's my attempt to give a Higurashi interpretation of Eua and Hanyuu. A common element across Higurashi stories is that characters give personification to their negative feelings. Keiichi's has his "other self", Shion has her demon, Rena has Reina, and of course Rika and Satoko have their witches. Eua is basically this for Hanyuu. After vanishing in the sea of fragments, Hanyuu is distraught to find the world Rika chose resulted in this event where Rika and Satoko grow apart. She sees herself as a failure for not leaving Rika with a perfect world and that negative feeling creates Eua. Much like how Satoko's witch killed her human side Hanyuu is ultimately able to suppress her sweet au au side almost entirely. Like Satoko's human side only the lingering fragment of the old Hanyuu remains and is brought out by Rika, but it's so weak that even the au au's are gone. When Satoko shows up in the ritual storehouse she touches a piece of Hanyuu (her horn) which enables Eua to pull in a part of Satoko's consciousness, but the Matsuribayashi arc continues on with that Satoko never actually dying. From that extracted consciousness of Satoko Eua/Hanyuu creates a scenario in which her failure never happened. Satoko and Rika stay together through Witchtoko's ruthless methods but the old part of Hanyuu is still in there feeling guilt for how it turned out. At first that lingering fragment of Hanyuu was happy to see Rika again but realizes she must say her goodbyes and confront the negative part of herself. The Eua vs Hanyuu battle is the same metaphorical conflict as the Satoko vs Satoko battle but with a better outcome. Ultimately Eua is defeated with a horn crack that puts her back into cute little au au mode symbolizing Hanyuu overcoming those negative feelings and accepting her failure.

I'm not really sure how to think about any of this but I'm pretty happy my earlier theory was confirmed for real this time that Satoko simply possessed other versions of herself in a different timeline and when she's done with it simply discards it and moves on to a different timeline.

So... that sure was an ending. Gou was great, but Sotsu really does feel like fan-fiction. I'm glad they went for a happy ending, but it still felt very rushed and anti-climactic. What could've been solved by a simple heart-to-heart in the beginning was solved by a simple heart-to-heart in the end. Rika is supposed to be well versed in The Power of FriendshipTM after the original Higurashi, so talking things out with Satoko at the end of it all instead of immediately just feels out of character. The Witch stuff was also completely unnecessary and seemed to be there just to pay lip service to Umineko. The simple explanation for all of this, of course, is that there wouldn't be a show without Rika doing a stupidity and the Witch stuff padding things out. Like I said before, the whole reason there is a show is because Eua/Featherine/R07's Literal Author Avatar wanted to make one. It was fitting, but man was did it end up being heavy-handed, and that detracted from my enjoyment of Sotsu significantly. It's definitely not as bad as it could've been, but it's still okay at best. J-Spot posted:That's from Umineko. It's in episode 8 I think. I don't remember if it's in the TIPS in the VN but I'm pretty sure Lambda is the one who explains it in the manga. And then she'd wake up with no memory of it, and once it came back to her, Satoko would kill her again. Once she was finally in a position to actually defend herself, talk wasn't an option. She was tired, and once she got the upper hand and was actually faced with deleting Satoko forever, she just said "gently caress you, you dumb bitch! I love you, and all of this was so stupid!" Once they had worn each other out and reached their limits, all that was left was to come to terms with the future. That makes sense to me.

I can't remember if Rika was totally ignorant of Satoko's issues or if she purposely backed off for reasons. On the bright side, this ending does sidestep the issue of Satoko having destroyed her own school life.
