Been back on books a bit, trying to look at bad screen (ipad) less in the evening and stick to good screen (kindle) Read the two 'EXPERT SYSTEM' books by Adrian Tchaikovsky - both pretty short read novellas, maybe they feel a little cramped and the setting / story wasn't given room to stretch, or maybe they're just small-scale stories? Anyway, I've read a few AT books and these weren't his best, the first one was ok but never felt like it got out of 2nd gear. The sequel I liked a touch better as it had a little more of the weird alien biologies stuff that I enjoyed from his spiders and octopus books, but still it wasn't blowing me away. If you see them for a quid maybe have a look, but not otherwise. Also, Le Guin's 'LATHE OF HEAVEN' which was a lot more enjoyable - definitely had the 'classic era scifi' vibe emanating from it, but the story and the writing were top notch. Reading it I was thinking 'What else did I read that has this kinda storyline?' and it was Blake Crouch's recent-ish 'RECURSION' (which is totally a wrote-for-hollywood book but actually a lot of fun) but looking up further he claims to have not read LoH at the time of writing Recursion; I'm rubbing my chin here. Finally I picked up qntm's (is this our boy?) 'THERE IS NO ANTIMEMETICS DIVISION' and enjoyed it a lot, the whole SCP thing has been done to death as are most public ballpit story worlds, but this was well written and compelling; if you like your Stross books this will probably be a good pickup for you.
