The light has left the ground. Only the inner glow of celestial blood is visible now, casting the world in shadow and gold. So dark...

You are in enormous danger.

ANXIETY: [ X ][ X ][ X ][ X ][ X ][60%] [What's that noise?]

You're not sure what you're hearing at first, but then it clicks; they're screams. Distant. Coming from over miles. Seconds later the Congregation chorus begins. They're weeping prayers. They're hiding horror behind the hundred hands grown to be enough to smother the sound. They're clinging to one another, paralyzed. They're not ready. They've spent so long trying to be ready. They'll never be ready.

That's when you hear it. The bassy-under hiding behind the chorus. Hatenoise. The squick of oilslick. It

sounds like

(WL - THREAT TO SANITY) 20(-10) [5]+[6]+[3] = 14 - HAHAHA UH OH
[Lionheart] allows one last chance...
(WL - THREAT TO SANITY) 20(-10) [3]+[1]+[4] = 8 - Success.

You have to act.

Now.

Oh man, I'm having trouble deciding. On the one hand, I say we hide - we're here to fight Bleeder and need to save our hp for that fight...

But on the other, it just feels wrong to not try to save the Congregation from this forever-dying. Wrong to not fight.

They die like this all the time though. They have died this way countless times. Can fighting this single iteration of it do anything to help them?

I completely agree but like StillFullyTerrible said this happens to them all the time to them. Once more is... I don't like it but we're on a budget. We give everything here and it'll be a waste.

If we can fight it off for one night, one single night, the congregation might follow our example.
Giving in will only ever end the same way for them, but if they start to fight back, who knows?
They might start to claw out a reprieve every once in a golden while.
Bleeder, I suspect, would also be more willing to hear us out when the time comes if they know we've been helping their flock.

DD: Fondly regard abomination.

If there’s any hope of a peaceful resolution with Bleeder, of forging a new path that doesn’t require killing the Lords, I think that path leads through fighting whatever the gently caress this is to help those in Bleeder’s care.

It might well kill us, though. We are in enormous danger. And that was a -10 willpower check just to not go insane.

I voted to fight. Fingers crossed.

This isn't what's important and it might well kill us, but it's what feels right.

Probably logically, what we need to do is to figure out whatever it is that will terrify Bleeder enough to 'effortlessly enslave' him and get his color. But also, like, man, I want to help these people and be nice.

This is probably a bad idea. But.

This is pretty obviously the spill of accursed crude oil that came from that rig we saw in that movie and destroyed The Island. The constant references to oil in the surroundings of this area and the malevolence ascribed to it only reinforces this.

I mean, IF we're able to defeat... this, that may be what terrifies Bleeder. In theory whatever this is, is also what stained the shield, right?

It's too strong. Nightmare logic with details so complex it mangles inquiry. It's the certainty found lying in a cold bed with sheets too thin to hide you, that something is coming to find and hurt you. Something that's found a way to hurt you forever, over and over with increasing hatred and pain each cycle. It's here now, among the Congregation, and it's going to speak through them as soon as it's done ending another cycle.

[Lionheart]

No, there isn't heroism found in your action suicide. Your heart is gild-green, but it's only gasoline for the fire found in your crown. A fire that is speaking angry, and it's telling you 'I am here to conquer the worst of this lightless land' gathering in your chest and in your back, iron insanity that gives your sword the surest grip.

You are the Tyrant. You are the new nightmare. Your gravity settles and you know that to reach Megalith you must walk with a hatred one million times the density of this Lorded Land. You raise your sword and call out into the ink black.

(![ER_INVALID]) 28 [4]+[2]+[1] = 7

It's so silent now. Every last mile heard.

When the Land Lorded Alive responds, it's with a renewed red. Hate they don't have to inflict on themselves. Hate they don't have to waste on their own. It's purified; they can afford beyond 100% for someone who is literally asking for it.

It's going to beat you senseless.

so quiet

It's huge. You move so much faster with your engine heart. So you make that almighty first impression.

[x2 Attack]+[Rapid Strikes]

One cut up.
(!Tyranny Rapid Strike) 18(-6) [4]+[1]+[6] = 11 - Success.
6 damage!

Another across.
(!Tyranny Rapid Strike) 18(-6) [3]+[2]+[2] = 7 - Success.
3 damage!

Last one stabbed in.
(!Tyranny) 18 [5]+[3]+[5] = 13 - Success.
15 damage!

You hurt it. You know it. That's how horrible you are. But you're still moving; instead of pressing your luck with a frenzy, you aim for one powerful cleave.

(!Tyranny) 18 [2]+[3]+[5] = 10 - Success.
[Blade Majestueux]
8 damage!

...but it's so dense with dead. You're still winning it slow though, and you step back to resume a closed stance. It's moving to pull you open.

(!Congregation) 12 [2]+[1]+[2] = 5 - Success.
6d: 1 damage!

(!Congregation) 12 [4]+[2]+[2] = 8 - Success.
6d: 6 damage!

You moved on instinct; no idea where it came from or how it attacked. Just the sound of weight skimming over fattened hot air, and then it struck you. It wants to hold you. It wants to pull you down. You have to be worse than that.

[x2 Attack]+[Rapid Strikes]+[Blade Majestueux x3]

A violent cross-shred.
(!Tyranny Rapid Strike) 18(-6) [1]+[5]+[5] = 11 - Success.
15 damage!

Into an angry overhead.
(!Tyranny Rapid Strike) 18(-6) [3]+[2]+[3] = 8 - Success.
15 damage!

Then driven in.
(!Tyranny) 18 [6]+[6]+[2] = 14 - Success.
7 damage!

HP: [ 13 / 21 ]
FP: [ 15 / 30 ]

It's not enough. It's still nightmare. It's going to mend. You have to gamble it; one hard throw.

(!Tyranny) 18 [1]+[5]+[6] = 12 - Success.
[Blade Majestueux]+[All-Out Attack: Deadly]
18 damage!

It can't stay cohesive. Too much too fast. But, it was never that they couldn't be defeated. It's that they couldn't stop coming back.

FP: [ 14 / 30 ]

You're wading slowly. The fleshthins are here now in tidal force, thousands wriggling with the warming wet of ichor, eagerly looking for meat to fold up into and hide inside of until it's unborn. You'd be truly afraid, but try as they might-

[Your DR 19] vs [Fleshthin 3d Damage]

You just push them aside and pull them off when some get too close to your face, the real fight being found in keeping your focus on where you're walking while managing the killflood. You pass by more of the Congregation fated (damned doomed destined) to suffer the repeating catastrophe. They're crying up in a tree, weak with woe and watching as the wood slowly sinks into the flesh-gummed soil. The thin strips of meat would soon find their way inside, folded up and packed so tight they rupture, which will just provoke even more meat to fold. God, it's wonderful. Three days of unadulterated freedom of flesh, and then the wonderful of a nightmare that somehow will always manage to find a way to be more powerful. You march on, hand closed tight ar

They keep screaming, all while you pivot, hop a fence, sword out a cluster of fleshthins, and then wrench the little tree they're clinging desperate to, forcing it to steady into the swampy soil. You bought them a few hours, at least. They're quiet as you leave, sweat-soaked and shivering. You manage to find a road uphill, climbing out of the worst of the flash flesh flood. You're not but a few miles more from MEGALITH, its immensity unseen but felt at this divine distance. First was conquest of the surrounding land. Though there's not much to overcome with the immensity of your biology. Over there is a pack of blood-seeking gropers, and they've surrounded a house. Inside of that house is someone hiding in a cold closet. If they so much as vary their death-shallow breathing, they'll be heard, and the house will be torn apart until they're found and eaten screaming alive. You stalk past, keeping out of sight of...

Oh, but the wailing warbling scream you suddenly send out into the haunted night. The blood-seekers scatter with terror forcing them into a long autopilot, enough to buy the victim in the closet a little while before they're heard and hunted. You stagger on, tired if exhilarated from the indraw of air, your blade screeching against the ichor-sticky sidewalk. You aim it out and around in a sweeping arc, still managing the careful line of self-control as your heart remains leashed.

Good news-well, we got that over with quick!

JC is fascinating me. I mean, obviously there's a Christian interpretation especially considering all the religious language around Bleeder, but IIRC that might also be the name of one of the Backup? Which means we might be able to lever our gemscar.

I wonder. With the silver mind as it currently is; is our promise to blue filling in its role?
Not by much, the gemscar is a promise rather than advisor, but one we're trying to abide by nevertheless.

Yeah, he's one of the backup, working as a radio news host in Jandoubi or something of the sort. We heard part of his newscast after a Silver Mind probe in the Holy Valley at the very beginning of the campaign. I don't think he's in the Rainforest Concordance right now though. He could be, though, since the Backup have the freedom of movement. But my guess is that he's at Jandoubi right now. That conversation between him and Bleeder probably happened while they were in the Island.

see that? know how hard that is to deal with, every single day? it's rotting the innards. it's sizzling them slowly and it's vile. it's wrong. it's vomit in the veins and ice in the bones. it's squatting coward with the regality of Crown.

LAYER posted:

Hundreds of them. How can you deal with that? So many died that week, so many many more those final three days, oh and the very many most that final final final night. That hurricane-teal tinted night. You tried, you tried and you succeeded at saving someone three times, but then you were at your limit; you run by hundreds suffering more. One is screaming because they've died all over again and now their heart is beating in reverse and producing oil; One is screaming because they know they can't cut off their limbs fast enough to stop the sickness from crawling into their spine to reach the brain; One is screaming because they remember that when you Survive you have to do it for the rest of your life because everyone can sense a Survivor and that means you will never be helped and cannot be touched and will not be saved.

How can you possibly save hundreds dying on repeat in synchronicity? You assess, and the logistics are a scream internal. A hand like gravity gently brushes hair from your cheek and tells you that's why you fight in the blind and just let it all fall under the sword.

(But even it wonders now at the strength it would take to accomplish that impossible holy.)

The leading four had moved in fast to reach Bleeder before he could escape or realize the strength of their force, but the second he did, he was fighting mad. The army had remained concentrated at the gate of the Megalith, and were pushed inside once the suburbs woke their most wonderful to let them run wild. The rest of Home's best fought to the mile-high peak of the nightmare tower.

You drop your sword and pull your gun to aim at the iron-bearded skull. Recognition wins out over reflex a moment later, and you lean down to pick up your sword and nearly slip on the warm softstone floor. Where...? You had been in the dark streets of the suburbs, going through an underpass. You looked back and there was a door. Looked forward, here you are; in a room like a basement, plain and empty, shiny with sweat.

Shiny? Very. Sweat? Everywhere. You kneel down and touch the floor, pulling back when you feel it give. You stand, the old skull nested in a corner from which rivulets of sweat trickle.

(You tripped, Tyrant. You fell, Child. Too dense for the metaphysic pressure up front, so here you are again in the Back. How is she?)

How is who?

quote:

What?

(I'm happy to hear.)

?????

(You're ascending. Weeks pass elsewhere so you can achieve their potential in minutes. Pass through the Back, up the Megalith's spine, to find your quarry. Move quickly; the land is aware and hates being so.)

You're trying the door before he's done speaking. Gah! The knob is twisting like flesh! The door ripples and the [organ] expresses unrest. A room is not meant to be an [organ] and it HATES that. An organ is able to experience. You steel yourself and you think about something.

ANXIETY: [ X ][ X ][ X ][ X ][ X ][60%]

You have to not think about exactly that. You have to keep your heart at this threshold for just a little longer. You need to ignore the loss of silver and the pressure of being inside a space that doesn't want to exist. Just think through the grime and haze; you were walking the suburbs, walking to Megalith. You fell down through the ground and now you're in the Back. You need to get up and out to find Bleeder. The skull can help. You can focus on that.

The knob. You go up to it and you pull.

(ST) 21 [5]+[1]+[4] = 10 - Success.

Something... eventually gives, and the knob crackles like it's full of thousands of tiny bone pebbles popping open. The entire door jerks and lean-bends open a ways, allowing you to try to slip through before it bends itself shut. You leap up and wriggle past.

(DX) 11 [6]+[6]+[5] = 17 - CRITICAL FAILURE!

You get all the way through, pulling your leg thr- poo poo! Your leg is caught! You tumble over and slam your head into the ground, senseless for a second, your ankle stuck as the door bends and tries to pull itself closed. You're tough enough for this to not be too bad at first, but the door is applying pressure; too much and it could pop, especially while you're stuck at such an awkward angle. You push up from the gro- poo poo! You slip and slam down again. You look up. Hallway. Stairwell. Doors. Gray stone, but no, no. It's sweating. It's absolutely soaked with skin oils pulsing through the softness. So much so that the air is difficult to inhale. The ground is too slick to get a hold of. You have to escape without making the [organ] even more upset with you.

You collapse to the wet floor with a loud smack, exhausted as you push up to standing. Your foot hurts like hell, but it's not sprained. Thank God! You look down the hall, past where the iron skull of the World King rests in the irregular light.

(The Megalith Back is dangerous. It abhors not being a vacuum.)

The [organ] is sensitive and ready to collapse. It can feel your every motion, and you need to work through it to escape. But which part of the Megalith Back seems safest to move through?
