Wasn't The Arrival by Shaun Tan basically dialogue free? There were a couple of panels with speech bubbles, but they were just filled with abstract shapes because no-one spoke the main character's language?

Sinfest's Sunday strips also do the no dialogue thing but they suck poo poo because Ishida is a chud. At least they look nicer than Mookie's.

Ishida and Mookie have a bit in common actually. Both started their comics out as silly gag a day strips and tried to turn it into something bigger, and both of them drove away large portions of their fanbase by doing stupid things in their comic. The big difference is Mookie drove them away because he has no self-awareness and doesn't understand why his ideas are bad, Ishida drove them away because he decided to go all in on hatred and bigotry.

Mookie certainly has a lot of problematic poo poo in his comics but it seems more like a moron stumbling into being completely tone deaf or mimicking stuff hes seen/enjoyed in media without much thought, rather than ishida who definitely knows what hes doing and is purposefully creating propaganda

Yeah that's more or less what I meant by him having no self awareness, he seems to mean mostly well. While he definitely has issues with women's sexuality and "jocks" he isn't actively using his comic to spread hate speech and most of the gross stuff isn't meant to be interpreted to be an actual statement to readers that you should, say, treat a woman who's cheated as an outcast and banish her from society. Compared to Ishida, who's straight up saying "Anyone who thinks trans women are women is an evil mindless zombie who is destroying the greatness of western civilization." Still, at the end of the day both of them introduced terrible poo poo into their comics and instead of apologizing for it, decided to double down on it, and lost a lot of support and turned their fan forums into ghost towns.

yeah Im definitely not making an excuse for mookie's poo poo but it definitely has a different feel to it than the outright "i am creating hateful propaganda on purpose" types that are SO common these days. Actually, in webcomics, were there always this many lovely propaganda based comics? I feel like they've kind of exploded in number

Gotta make sure to draw the water low enough to see her rear end and some of his dick. It looks like he's pissing the name. She's also standing in a weird position. She's not facing him at all, even though that's what he's trying to draw. You don't need to draw three fourths all the time. Move the drat camera. Their faces are in profile which means they would be standing besides each other. But then he draws snout with his front to is and her with her back which means she's standing in front of him. Snout is either looking not at her in the first panel and looking at something to his side, or they only exist in 2 dimensions, or something physically impossible is happening. So the message is for Snout and he is the intended reader of it. But to him it is upside-down. I get that it isn't too difficult to read stuff that is upside down, but if she is doing some kind of divination or doing some kind of fancy ink magic writing to reveal something to snout you think it would be oriented properly to him. I get that WE, not Snout, are the intended readers; Mookie has been long-observed to not put a lot of thought into the point of view of characters*. But if this was a good comic by a skilled artist, certainly that scene would be drawn from a higher overhead angle so that both Snout and the readers can easily see what was "written" in the water. *Speaking of which, because Arudak hasn't been in the last couple of pages he temporarily does not exist and therefore is temporarily not sad

So the women get their xtra long torsos broken up by the curve of their hips, and men are straight lines all the way down to their feet.

Back in the library, Veth handed Snout a book, helpfully including a note pointing out the plot-relevant page: The Watercaller is Luna, the Great White Savior of the orcs of Maltak. Instead of being a lyrical (for some suitably broad definition of "lyrical") metaphor, in the Mookieverse the poem is boringly literal. I guess the "you" could be someone other than Dominic himself, but given that one of the things we're repeatedly told is that Dominic is responsible for magic becoming "more gentile" or whatever I think where we're headed is that Dominic is Solaris. Or AM from "I Have No Mouth and Must Scream". I Have Sidemouth and Must Scream. The Beast That Shouted Mapvel at the Heart of the World.
