Not quite as enamored as the rest of the thread with Ayashimon given that at this point the 'normal guy becomes super-strong through training and then gets disappointed by it' thing is becoming a trope, but it's got plenty of potential. It really depends on how it evolves and how the setting is handled, but I enjoyed the first chapter and I'm looking forward to more of it.

I wanna state on the record that Might Guy was loving robbed. Despite being unable to use magic bullshit, he still managed to kick Madara so hard that he basically destroyed him, and Madara only survived because of "psych I'm goddamn immortal!" cheat. Any other enemy would have been killed right then and there.

Electric Phantasm posted:The little peeks we get of Ruru's past and just how she lives her life make her seem like the poster child of fleeting happiness. Yes, Ruru is a pretty interesting protagonist where while she's happy it's pretty clear her life is kinda lovely. She's happy thanks to her friends taking care of her. A mom who does actually care a lot, but just "can't" be around. It's part of why some chapters are so wholesome. The mangaka is doing a solid job at keeping Ruru's circumstances lovely, but not horrible while allowing her to have plenty of moments of enjoyment. Even in the little things in life like a sunrise. Also, drat that sunrise was good looking. chiasaur11 posted:Well, it doesn't have a solid chapter 2 yet, but it's set up well for it. Just have a quick fight to establish what they'll be like, finish the duel with some success, and have some good character interactions, and we're off to the races. This very much. We need a solid second chapter, but this new manga really came out swinging. We're given clear reasons to care, clear reasons for his strength, a preliminary goal, a reason why he's all alone a hint of a past. While he doesn't have a long term goal yet, he's in the employ of a girl who does have a clear long term goal so we know where he's going. I don't know why, but it reminded me a little of Soloist in a cage with some of the scenes highlighting him slaughtering people. Even if in the latter's case it was shown as a sad thing. While Kaido looks happy, him slaughtering isn't really shown as a good thing I guess. It's easy to forget, but Neru actually had a pretty strong first chapter. Read it again. Neru had connections, struggles at school, a disappeared family, good artwork and an okay sense of humour. The mistake was basically that it never worked on the hooks it set up. The family is never referenced after first chapter(I was sure grandpa was dead considering the unclear language). The friends disappear in the second chapter. The humour disappears. His goal at that point was finding out what he wanted to do in life since he sucked at normal school. But then that also disappeared for some weird fights with people who immediately disappeared again? As much as I wanted to like it, it was just incompetently written. Contrast it to Red Hood, which faffed about in the village for 2 months. Basically, Ayashimon can still have the same trajectory depending how the next chapters cash in on the setup. Me and Roboco: I skimmed it I wasn't feeling it. I think it's time for this to end. Speaking of Neru, it dies as it lived. A mess of wavy haired people doing stuff because reasons. Sakamoto: I love this series a lot. That mid combat exercise routine. Mashle: I'm fully on board for all the bullshit. Elusive Samurai: Lol at that army of smilie faces. Still, this is looking good. Witch Watch: I found the tropes guys a little forced, but I'd be lying if it didn't get a chuckle out of me. JoJosSiwaAdventure posted:Dumbish question, but knowing that people don't like where things go in the back of the series and don't like the ending is Naruto worth a read if I'm subscribed to viz (so the financial cost is negligible) and am basically just spending my time on it? Read it. If you can binge it, or even do 1 chapter a day it's fairly entertaining. It has a whole bunch of pitfalls, but also really drat well sells some of its moments. I read through Naruto recently and actually thought it held up pretty well. A lot of people didn't like it post time skip because it eventually stopped being about Naruto getting better though his own determination, but what it turned into I thought was done well on its own merits, even if it wasn't what people wanted. Basically it becomes about how to save people and end conflict without just murdering the other party; the final arc is full of power escalation and no selling techniques, but each one advances a number of character arcs, and even Guy's big moment matters because it's ultimately what weakens Madara enough for Kaguya to emerge. It's a total betrayal of the hard work ethic, obviously, but as an example of characters being talked around into coming together in cooperation, I genuinely thought it did well, even if it would have been better if it hadn't forgotten its original ethos.

guy's the only one who made madara even notice him. the rest of the cast didn't even qualify as opponents. faint praise, but that's as good as it gets when a mangaka accidentally makes a completely invincible boss.

He summons a turtle at one point and does a few other jutsu I think. He just doesn't like them much. Rock Lee's the one who's magically disabled.

The weird thing about PPPPPP is that while we see from the kids' flashbacks that the dad was an abusive piece of poo poo, neither the MC nor his brother actually condemn him or hate him for what he's done to them. It's a really odd detail to omit from what's supposed to be a family drama and makes me wary that this'll go the Food Wars route with the dad.

Should have dropped out all the Soul Society higher ups after that arc except maybe Rukia's brother, his lieutenant, and maybe a couple guys from dumb fightmans squad.

Neru had a decent art style but I kinda got a bit down with it near the end because it started to feel like the character designs couldn’t differentiate themselves more, so near the end I started having a hard time knowing the character in the panel actually was. Red Hood also had a bad art problem for me where when there was nothing going on the art was really good, but when the action scenes started it became a mess to follow and I couldn’t tell what was going on. They’re both okay manga but I think both had some glaring issues that aren’t just story related.

Yeah I agree with both these. Neru in particular was so hard to follow, I legit don't know who ANY of the characters in that final chapter were aside from Neru and the girl from the first chap whose name I can't remember. I couldn't tell ANYONE else apart.

That said I can't help the feeling that Justice is buying into it deliberately as an excuse to hunt down the EZ and Elsie inspite of being told they're not a priority.

Dunno if anyone's mentioned it in this thread before, but the author/artist behind Quintessential Quintuplets has been doing another series since it ended called Ranger Reject and it is really good. Basically about a Putty that infiltrates and joins the Ranger corp ranks to take them down from within. Definitely not a romcom like Quints was, that's for sure.

Really neat premise. edit: All caught up now. This is really great, the path the story takes continues to go in pretty unexpected directions edit2: It's always nice to see a manga artist be able to move on from a more typical commercial romcom series (like Quintuplets) to something really unique. A genuinely novel narrative in a manga like this really stands out. For a recent example, I absolutely didn't expect the insane recent stuff with little fro guy being killed (at least so soon). Or the thing with bowl-cut guy forming the team with the other people (though it makes perfect sense in hindsight). Like you get the impression it was building up both these characters to be some sort of longer-term part of the series as some sort of companion to the protagonist, only to just throw a curve ball (though for all I know the latter still might amount to something). If I had to guess, it's moving towards the protagonist developing some sort of genuine cooperation, after finally finding out about fro guy + glasses guy getting killed (which will basically make the bonds he's been forming with some of these humans "hit home"), maybe converting of of his current trainee pseudo-allies into real allies against the rangers. But I doubt he'll find out about what happened to fro guy for a while (I'm assuming the fro guy who just joined up with them is XX in disguise). I could be completely off-base about this, though, which is good and makes me much more interested to find out what happens next. As a side comment, I like the part where fro guy starts to go into his backstory and the protagonist is just like "No. Stop." The combat is also more interesting than I expected. The protagonist makes pretty clever use of his abilities, while distinctly being an underdog against all the antagonists. Ytlaya fucked around with this message at 03:37 on Nov 19, 2021 |

a couple of Naruto thoughts after reading the first four volumes: Kakashi rules Naruto is a little poo poo, but in a way where i just wanna give him a hug i really like "Inner Sakura" when she pops up, but man we went from "Sakura doesn't have the immense potential of the guys but she has incredible energy control" to her being like "i'm so terrible, i can't stand up to the guys at all, i don't think i'm gonna apply for the journeyman exams" real quickly (i know she does go through them, but cultural osmosis also tells me the series doesn't treat her character super well going forward) when the fox demon energy started leaking out and Naruto did that little transformation thing in the ice trap was hype as hell Haku

It even sets up growth right during the arc itself.

Idk why authors have so much trouble writing female characters, just do what One Piece does and have Nami/Robin mostly interchangeable characters if they were boys.
