The Zillow search term of the day is "distressed", aka rich and middle-class people emulating the aesthetic of (white, rural) poverty as an attempt to add a miniscule degree of soul to their mass-produced surroundings. Often involves stripping down actual historic housing into white voids and then turning them back into a more homogenized ideal of "historic" design.

Houses used to really FLAUNT their house numbers, I notice. Like this:

638!!!! It's practically a brand identity.

A friend of mine lived in a fancy house that was broken into apartments, and the house was really About being No.5. No.5 appeared all over the place. At certain times of day, NO. 5 would be projected in yellow and red stained glass numerals across the foyer. It was ostentatious.

The chair right next to the table would be real handy for putting shoes on and off too. But that will never happen, because that picture is from america. It's like there is an ancestral memory of things that should be in a foyer, but it has become untethered from reality and now includes pianos.

I think it's a trick of the perspective. If you use the reflection of the sink as a reference point it seems like a normal shower?

my showerhead comes out of the wall at just under seven feet. That ceiling has to be at least eight feet, and you can see there's only three of those tiny square tiles, so it's coming out at almost eight feet high, that doesn't seem normal

I agree, it's just tougher to find houses with a design that is good (i.e. not given a generic gray remodel, not trapped in 90s beige) or at least interesting, in a decent state of repair, and reasonably sized. It's why I gravitate towards older bungalows and colonials, they were sized appropriately for human beings (or hobbits, in the case of the oldest colonials) to live in. But again, so many have doubled or tripled in size from modern additions.

Also, bigger expensive houses tend to have wordier listings making it much easier to actually search for them. There are probably a lot of hidden gems that entirely lack descriptions that I can't dig out from under thousands of listings of generic gray remodels.

Originally built on Highland Road, where Knox Hill Subdivision now stands; this Louisiana Creole plantation structure was built circa 1779 on a 1786 spanish Land Grant given to Joseph Petitepierre who was one of the original Klienpeters to arrive in East Baton Rouge parish.( petite Pierre literally translates to klein peter. In 1985 Robert H. Hodges bought and moved the house from its orginial site to 5544 Highland Road., which is 2 miles from LSU. Had he not agreed to purchase the house and move it, the house would have been demolished. It is a raised Creole plantation house with 2160 sq. ft. of liv area which included an additional designed by by famed Louisiana architect A. Hayes Town. This is the oldest inhabited dwelling in EBR parish. and believed to be one of the five (5) oldest homes in Louisiana. This house is listed in the United States National Register of Historic Places. The House is made of Cypress and it contains many of its original mud and moss over stakes (bousillage) walls. It is held together by pegs, not nails, using tenon and mortise construction. the attic contains a Norman truss. The roof is split cedar shingles. The floor plan is typical of Creole vernacular architecture with rooms arranged side by side, with no corridors. The floors are the original odd-planked cypress boards. It contains the original double-sided fireplaces. The ceilings are 10.5 feet high. There is a large front porch(Gallery) that is 38.5 feet by 11 feet wide over-looking Highland Road. The 2 bedrooms in the addition are both en suites with a shared baloncy overlooking Bayou Fountain. The entire house in central AC/ Heat.
