Here's a shot of the exterior of the first house. If there's one thing I want to see in snow country, it's a shallow roof pitch dumping on to another shallow roof pitch.

Youth Decay posted:I agree, it's just tougher to find houses with a design that is good (i.e. not given a generic gray remodel, not trapped in 90s beige) or at least interesting, in a decent state of repair, and reasonably sized. It's why I gravitate towards older bungalows and colonials, they were sized appropriately for human beings (or hobbits, in the case of the oldest colonials) to live in. But again, so many have doubled or tripled in size from modern additions. It's also really frustrating because we're renting a laneway house here in Vancouver, which is a little on the small side (I kinda wish we had one extra room), but otherwise is really lovely and perfectly sized. I'd love to be able to just buy something this size (god knows we're already paying enough) but the only houses around here are million-dollar monstrosities. There's just no justification for developers to build small, it seems.

there's a weird fetish among a lot of people to have a kitchen where you can pretend you are washing dishes in a restaurant for $8/hour just like the modern farmhouse cancer where you can pretend you are on a farm, working very hard each day, up at the sound of a rooster, doing grueling manual labor

Kitchen islands work fine when the kitchen is laid out sensibly and the house has enough space. There is no conceivable layout that would make that kitchen not a pain in the rear end, island or no. Try to imagine where you could put counter space or appliances with walkways to both sides of the fridge, an exterior wall on one side, and a bathroom to another. I feel like I'm looking at one of the ways kitchen toilets happen.

The window on the back left is higher than the ones in the foreground, indicating that there could have been counters under it. The counters wouldn't have been continuous because of all the doorways, but there's plenty of room for counters along the walls if you remove the island.
